Gore Vidal - The Polemicist

Gore Vidal passed away on August 1, 2012. The most interesting thing we heard said about him, although he led an amazing life, was what a great  polemicist he was.

   A polemicist is a person who can argue in favor of something he believes, and also argue against your belief.

   He was a brilliant essayist, novelist and playwright. He  would get in great battles of wits on television with the likes of William Buckley; each had the IQ to hit and wound the other with "words".

   One of his friends stated that he never lost his quick wit, or desire to learn more, even in old age.

Housing Crisis in Calaveras

   While most of us are aware of the foreclosure crisis in Calaveras County, many may not be aware of the impacts of having no place to live.

Andy A. Salem, Jr.

    Andy Salem was born on July 8, 1930 and passed away on June 9, 2012 at his home in Arnold. He was 81.

400 Acre fire in Riverside County

 A fire, which started earlier today August 1, 2012, called the "volcano" fire is burning in the LaCresta/DeLuz area of Riverside County.

   The fire is only 10% contained and the cause is still under investigation.

Arrest for Theft of Vehicle in Railroad Flat

   On July 31, 2012 at approximately 12:40 PM  Calaveras Sheriff's deputies were conducting a burglary follow-up investigation near a residence on the 1400 block of Ridge Road in Railroad Flat.

Music in the Park in Murphys

     The Calaveras Arts Council's Music in the Parks 2012 series comes to a hilarious close on August 22, 2012 at Murphys Comunity Park with Sourdough Slim and his side-kick Robert Armstrong

    Music starts at 6:30 PM, but get there early and stake your ground for these two cowboy entertainers.

     Roots revivalists Sourdough Slim and Robert Armstrong are passionate about the music they play and the culture from which it springs.

Broken Window at Murphys Business

    Jens Salon in Murphys reported a broken window on July 31, 2012 to the Calaveras County Sheriff.

    A deputy responded and took the report of valdalism.


Altercation at Valero in Wallace Reported

   A Calaveras County Sheriff's Deputy was called to the Valero Gas Station on Southworth in Wallace on July 31, 2012 due to a reported altercation at that location.

   A deputy responded and took the report. We have no other details at this time. 

Valley Springs Man Arrested for Robbery

   Andrew Richard Neuner, of Valley Springs was arrested on Covey Lane for alleged Robbery, a felony, and battery on a Non-Cohabitating Spouse, a misdemeanor.

    Calaveras County Sheriff's Deputies booked Neuner into the County Jail.

Leon John Dyken Arrested

    A Nevada City resident, Leon John Dyken 46, was arrested on July 31, 2012, at the 4000 block of Ponderosa Road in Vallecito by a Calaveras County Sheriff's Deputy on 3 separate warrants for six alleged offenses, all misdemeanors.

   Dyken was booked into the Calaveras County Jail.

Arnold Man Arrested for Inflicting Injury

  On Tuesday, July 31, 2012,  Roger Wyatt Adams, Jr. of Venado in Arnold was arrested for allegedly Inflicting Injury on a Spouse or Co-Habitant, a felony, Violating and Court Order and for making annoying phone calls, both misdemeanors.

   The Calaveras County Sheriff's Office booked Adams into the County Jail.


Michael Phelps Breaks Record

    As of last night, July 31, 2012, Michael Phelps had won his 19th Olympic Medal, and 15 of them are gold.

   This breaks the all-time record for medals won.  And there are still some events to go in London.
