San Bernardino County Has 11% Unemployment

Dear Sierra Sentinel:
   On Morning Joe this morning, San Bernardino County's dying economy was one of the focuses of discussion.
   1/2 of all homes financed there are under water, unemployment is over 11 % and property values are still declining.
   If you compare this with Calaveras County, we are so much worse. Unemployment numbers here hover around 13% officially, but do not take into account those who are now on welfare or only working part time, or have given up looking.

Fatal Motorcycle Accident in Valley Springs

    At 5:05 PM on Sunday August 12, 2012, CHP received a call that an accident had occurred involving a motorcycle at Bane Rd and Cox Drive in Valley Springs. Cal Fire was also called out.

Fire in Lassen Volcanic National Park

  UPDATE: Monday August 13, 2012 at 12:00M The Reading Fire is now 21,530 acres and is 15% contained. A community meeting is planned for August 14, 2012 at 7 PM in Old Station at the Volunteer Fire Department.

    It started on July 23, 2012 because of lightning.

A fire in Lassen Volcanic National Park in northeastern California has grown to 9,063 acres and is only 5 % contained at this time.
  Called the Reading fire, parts of the park and of Hwy 89 are closed. Only 789 firefighters are assigned to this fire, which was caused by lightning.

Bear Fire in Sierra National Forest

  UPDATE: August 12, 2012, this fire is 95% contained.

 August 10, 2012 at 11 PM  The Bear fire is still at 50% containment at this time.

We've had several inquiries into the Bear Fire, which is a 700 acre lightning caused fire in the Sierra National Forest at the 7000 to 9000' level.

   Four rotary and four fixed wing aircraft are working to contain the fire. Ten smokejumpers and 100 firefighters have been deployed.  The fire is considered about 50% conntained at this time. It is burning 1/2 mile from the San Joaquin River. No structures are threatened. There has been 1 injury.

Traffic Hazard in Murphys

   CHP just reported that there is a vehicle high-centered, causing a hazard at Utica Powerhouse Rd and Hwy 4 in Murphys. Be cautious in that area until it is cleared.

Arnold Man and Woman Arrested

    On Sunday, August 12, 2012, Joshua David Jones, of Arnold, was arrested by Calaveras County Sheriff's deputies, allegedly for Assault with a Deadly Weapon other than a firearm, a felony, and Contempt, disobeying a court order, a misdemeanor.

   Jones was booked into the Calaveras County Jail. Sunshine Nichole Nordstrom was also arrested at the same address in Arnold for alleged Contempt, Disobeying a Court Order a misdemeanor.  Nordstrom was booked and released with a citation.

Mokelumne Hill Man Arrested

     David Lee Gallup, of Mokelumne Hill, was arrested on Sunday August 12, 2012 for allegedly obstructing an officer, a misdemeanor, and for inflicting corporal injury on a spouse, a felony.

   The Calaveras County Sheriff's Office booked Gallup into the Calaveras County Jail.

Neflix CEO Buys $1 million of Facebook Stock

  At a price of around $21.03 per share, Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix invested $1 million in  Facebook (FB) stock.

   Since Facebook's IPO the stock has plunged from $45 down to its current price, and some believe it is a bargain now. Obviously Hastings does.

Texas Near to Latino Majority Population

   Nina Vaca, Chief Executive of the Latino Chamber of Commerce was a guest on CNBC's Squawk Box Monday morning August 13, 2012.

   She is from Texas, owns her own successful business, and told the audience that within ten years Texas will be majority population of Latinos.

   Her statement that "If you're not now related to a Latino, you soon will be" tells the country that we are more of a melting pot now than ever before.

   Latinos not only become easily integrated into the American communities, but they seek the American dream and work hard for themselves and their families.
