Phyllis J. Brownell-Kahl

    Phyllis J. Brownell-Kahl of Valley Springs, passed away after complications from a subdural hematoma on February 15, 2013.  She was 88.

Foster Care Youth Speaks out

   A teen Foster youth had the courage to come before the Calaveras Board of Supervisors and speak out for an organization he is part of that was created to help other foster care children.

Illegal Gunfire in Murphys

   A caller reported to the Calaveras Sheriff hearing firearms discharge on Roaring Camp Road in Murphys on February 27, 2013.

    Reportedly sounds like automatic gun fire from across the canyon.

   A resident reported to the Calaveras Sheriff on February 27, 2013 that there was a suspicious person on Spyglass in Valley Springs.

   Apparently this subject was on foot with a stick and a bottle, hunting, and just now found a lizard, according to the log. No arrest or citation was issued.

Burglary reported on Rawhide in Arnold

   A burglary that had occured on Rawhide Drive in Arnold was reported to Calaveras Sheriff's officers on Wednesday, February 27, 2013.

   It is not indicated if the Sheriff's office has a suspect or not.

Woman Reports Grenade

   An Angels Camp woman apparently reported that her deceased brother had a storage locker at Grub Stake Mini Storage, where he had a grenade.

   She reported that she did not know if it was real or not.

Capuchin monkeys crack nuts and use tools

      The capuchin monkeys studied in Brazil, not only know how to smash nuts, but how to keep nuts from rolling off the table, etc.

    Does this mean that all men are trainable, or only if  having  the IQ of a capuchin?

Chiefs still want to draft QB

   Although they have agreed to take Alex Smith for the two remaining years of his NFL contract from the 49ers, the Chiefs still plan to try and draft a QB this offseason.

Tennessee Woman Charged $5 for using bathroom

   There is no question that non-patrons do pose a problem for restaurant or cafe owners who just come in to use the bathrooms.

   A woman in Tennessee apparently had a photo taken of her license plate and got a bill in the mail for $5 after using a local restaurant.

   The owner said that there was a sign posted in the mirror about the charge, and she had refused to pay when she left.

   There is some talk that the 49ers are very interested in trying to make a trade for Darrelle Revis, the Jets cornerback.

Tuolumne Planning meeting cancelled

   A notice of cancellation was just sent out for the regularly scheduled meeting of the Southern Tuolumne County Planning Commission for Wednesday March 13, 2013.

   The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at 7 PM.

CalPers divests itself of gun stocks

   The Board of the California public employees retirement system voted yesterday to sell all $5 millions worth of Smith and Wesson stock it had invested in.

   They stated the reason is that they manufacture weapons that are banned in the state of California.

Missing tourist found in LA

    A Canadian tourist who was reported missing three weeks ago was finally found yesterday. Her body was located in the water tank on top of the hotel where she was staying in Los Angeles.

   Apparently only employees had a key to the door to the roof, and the only other access was the fire escape.

New Brewery on SF Waterfront

   Looks like Anchor Brewery is opening a new brewery, and where? Why right next to the new AT&T Giants ballpark in San Francisco, of course.

No CCWD moratorium in Douglas Flat

   CCWD has just notified us that the moratorium they had placed on the Douglas Flat area sewage treatment facility is cancelled.
   Does this mean that development is back on in that area?  We have asked Dennis Dooley, President of CCWD and will let you know what his response is.

   At 11:45 AM several vehicle spin-outs were reported to CHP at Hwy 88 and Ridge Rd in Amador County.

   Roads are icy at higher elevations. Do not travel without chains or four-wheel drive.

Kellogg's recalling...

  In case you hadn't heard, the Kellogg Company is recalling some packages of Special K Red Berries cereal because of a risk that they might contain fragments of glass.

    The voluntary recall covers some 11.2 ounce and 37 ounce packages as well as 22.4 ounce twin packs, according to a statement posted on the company's website.

   At 8:33 AM CHP received a report that a CalTrans vehicle hit a tree on Hwy 88. No injuries were reported, but apparently it will be an hour before CHP can reach the location.

   AT 5:23 AM CHP received a report that there was a collision at Hwy 4 and Hwy 49 in Angels Camp. It is not known if there are any injuries.

Big Rig Blocking Hwy 4

   At 5:48 PM the CHP received a call that a big rig is partially blocking Hwy 4 at Forest Meadows Drive, causing a traffic hazard.

   The CalTrans plows have just started running again after nearly 2 hours.

UH, DUH, Mr. Sheriff

  We just now received a notice from the Sheriff that low snow levels are affecting Calaveras County. 

UH, DUH, Mr. Sheriff. Where have you been for the last 3 hours? IN other words, in case you hadn't noticed, STAY OFF THE ROADS!!

Bus Stuck on Mountain Ranch Rd

   At 4:51 PM a vehicle was reported stuck in the snow at Hwy 4 and Ottawas in Arnold.

Big Rig in ditch at Gun Club Rd and Hwy 49

   At around 4 PM a big rig apparently slid off the hwy into a ditch at Hwy 49 and Gun Club Rd in Angels Camp. Another vehicle is stuck in the snow  at Hwy 4 and Parrots Ferry Rd in Vallecito.

Hwy 4 Shut Down at Poole Station Rd.

   CHP has just announced that Hwy 4 is shut down after a multi vehicle collision near Poole Station Road in Copperopolis.

Traffic collision at Hwy 12 and Hwy 49

    There was a traffic accident reported at 3:25 PM at Hwy 12 and Hwy 49 in San Andreas. Most of the CHP are already on other accidents, so they may have to borrow CHP from Stockton.

Hwy 4 and Stallion Way, vehicles stuck in the snow

   Multiple vehicles are reportedly stuck in the snow at Hwy 4  and Stallion between Angels and Copperopolis, according to CHP.

Traffic Collision in San Andreas

   A traffic collision has occurred at 3:11 PM at Mountain Ranch Rd. and Rocky Road in San Andreas, blocking the lanes.

    A bus is stuck in the snow at Hwy 49 and Deer Creek Road in Angels Camp.  20 other vehicles are stuck in the snow in that area.

Traffic Accident at Hwy 88 and Liberty Rd.

    No injuries were reported in the 2:47 PM traffic accident that occurred on Hwy 88 at Liberty Rd.

    The vehicles involved, a gold Kia and and black sedan, are not movable. CHP is enroute to the scene.

Fatality on Hwy 4

   According to a report by CHP David Garrett (75) of Camp Connell was traveling eastbound in his Toyota Prius on Hwy 4

    It was pleasant to hear that Colin Kaepernick, who was offered chances to go to the Oscars, the Grammys, to appear of Jay Leno or write books, turn them all down.

Army Dog Training has Fraud, etc....

    After a report came out that the Army's Dog Training program is wrought with fraud, timesheet abuse, racism and sexual harrassment problems, the program is being totally revamped.

    An oversight committee will be established to handle investigations and provide supervision.

Country singer dies....

   Mindy McCready, the country singer who's boyfriend committed suicide only about a month ago, was found dead of a single gunshot wound to the head on her porch, according to authorities.

     This is considered a suicide also. She leaves 2 young sons.

Four shots through the bathroom door?

     It came out that apparently the girlfriend of Pistorius, Olympic racer, was shot four times, through the bathroom door, and then carried downstairs.

   He was charged with premeditated murder in South Africa.

The President played golf this weekend...

   Some of the press made a big deal of the fact that President Obama played golf with Tiger Woods this weekend in Florida.

    They were apparently upset that they weren't invited to take photos.

Tuolumne County Planning Committee meets

   The Tuolumne County Planning Committee meets on Thursday, February 21, 2013 at 1:30 PM.

   The meeting will be held in the Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors Chambers. One thing on the agenda is to do away with committees that are appointed and instead appoint adhoc committees (which means they do not have to notify the public or abide by the Brown Act).

Horsemeat in the US?

   The minute most of us heard of the scandal in the UK about horsemeat being found in the ground beef, we began wondering if it was possible here in the US.

   To reassure us, the USDA stated that since the US no longer slaughters horses or imports horse meat from other countries, it is very unlikely to happen here.

   A woman in Connecticut came to the police station to bail her husband out of jail after he was arrested for a DUI.

   Instead, the problem was, she was also inebriated and police arrested her and put her in jail for a DUI.

Fatality on Jack Tone Road

      The Jack Tone offramp is re-open after two hours of closure due to a fatality at Hwy 99 in Modesto.

   The deceased victim was ejected from the vehicle as a result of the collision. The area is now clear and open for traffic as of 2:30 PM.

Lake Tulloch Homeowners: Attention/Kudos to Supervisor Wright

   It turns out that only 50 of the nearly 4000 homeowners at Lake Tulloch wer actually notified about this extreme new vacation rental law.

   Fortunately, it came out in public at today's meeting. This is a serious new ordinance that will affect all homeowners and they don't want you to know about it.

   We have to commend Chris Wright, the new Supervisor for District 2, who was the only one who wanted to notify everyone honestly.

Christopher Dorner saga ends with more violence

    6 PM:  After a shoot-out that killed one deputy and wounded another, Christopher Dorner's body was removed from a burned out cabin in the Big Bear area of San Bernardino County.

   Former Bush administration cabinet official and Stanford political science professor Condoleeza Rice is co-chairing the nonprofit Bipartisan Policy Center's Immigration Task Force, a new group that says it will "consider all pillars of immigration reform, including enforcement, legalization and worker visas," and present its conclusions in several months.

Blackberry, not Research in Motion

  In case you didn't notice, last week Research in Motion, the creators of the Blackberry, changed their company name to Blackberry (Nasdaq: BBRY).

Skateboarding Accident in San Andreas

  9:15 AM:   CHP is at the scene on Hwy 49 in San Andreas, where a skateboarder ran into a vehicle, it was reported.

   The report indicates the accident occurred on Hwy 49 between Pope and Treat Ave.

   Apparently there are minor injuries.

Next Year's SuperBowl

   What with the blizzard that hit the New York area over the past weekend, the NFL is concerned that planning next year's SuperBowl in an outdoor arena will need contingencies.

   One of those contingencies is delaying the game several days. MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford New Jersey, where the Giants play, was buried in snow in this storm, not to mention the roads leading to the stadium.

Howard Stern Enjoys Snowstorm

   We haven't yet seen them, but rumor has it that Howard Stern and his wife Beth enjoyed the snow so much, he took photos.

   Apparently Beth is shown making snow angels in a bikini and in a sleeveless gown.

   The shirts have sleeves, which haven't been seen in recent years in the NBA. They say it is lighter than the tank tops.

Grand Theft in Arnold

   On Cypress Point Drive in Arnold officer initiated activity on February 11, 2013, exposed the theft of a vending machine at Mountain Retreat, grand theft.

   There is no indication id there is a suspect in the case.

Traffic Accident in Burson

  At 4:55 PM a traffic accident was reported to CHP that occurred at Olive Orchard Rd and South Burson Rd in Burson.

   Apparently a Dodge Pidupt and a 4-door Toyota collided at that location.  They are not currently blocking the road.

   CHP is enroute to the scene.

Big Rig Overturned in Linden

 UPDATE:  3:35 PM Traffic control is in place. CalTrans requested for cleanup.

    A big rig has overturned a trailer loaded with gravel across all lanes on Hwy 26 and Escalon Bellota Road in Linden, according to a report to CHP at 3:18 PM.

Coyote Hunt Contest Criticized

   In a little town called Adin in Modoc County, a contest was held last weekend to see who could kill the most coyotes in the county.

   The organizers of the event, Adin Supply Co., - described as the only store in the tiny town and the River Rod and Gun Club were tight-lipped when asked how many hunters were participating.

   Camilla Fox, executive director of Project Coyote, said "We feel the killing of coyotes or any other wild animal as part of a contest is unethical, ehtically indefensible and contrary to sound science."

    The group promotes what it terms "educated coexistence" between people and coyotes.

   It is not known at this time how many coyotes were killed in the contest.

Birth rate in US lowest ever

  The birth rate in the US was the lowest ever in 2011, according to the CDC in Atlanta. There were 3,953,593 babies born in 2011, 1% fewer than in 2010 and 4% fewer than in 2009.

   That number, combined with population data, yielded a crude birth rate of 1.7 per 1000 people, the lowest rate ever reported for the nation.

Traffic Accident at Hwy 4 and Big Trees Road

   UPDATE:  At 12:01 PM CHP arrived and called a tow truck.

   Apparently a brown calf got across the fence at Calaveritas road and Old Gulch Rd in Calaveritas, creating a traffic hazard. CHP is enroute to the scene.

Betty Snyder of Valley Springs

   Betty Snyder of Valley Springs, passed away in Lodi. She was 87.

   She and her husband John, who passed away several years ago, lived on and ran the Snyder Ranch in Valley Springs. Together, they founded the Valley Springs Pow Wow.

   Well-known and beloved member of the community, Betty will be remembered as a generous and loving woman.

   Betty is survived by daughters Susan, Janet, Joanne and Maryann and their families.

   Memorial services will be held at the Valley Springs United Methodist Church on Monday, February 11, 2013 at 11 AM.

Traffic Accident on Hwy 4 in Arnold

   CHP received a report of a traffic accident on Hwy 4 at Forest Rd 7N23 in Arnold at 10:04 AM. No injuries were reported.

   A grey Toyota pickup slid off the road at that location. CHP is enroute. A tow truck has been dispatched.

Traffic Hazard Reported in Copperopolis

   A traffic hazard was reported to CHP at 10:02 AM on Copper Cove Drive. An officer is enroute, but it is not clear what the hazard is at this time.

Traffic Accident at Hwy 4 and Jack Tone Rd

   A traffic collision was reported at 9:46 at Hwy 4 and Jack Tone Rd.  CHP has been dispatched to the scene.

   No injuries have been reported.

9 year old gives birth

   Authorities are searching for a 17 year old boy who they say may have sexually assaulted a 9 year old girl in Jalisco, Mexico.

   The 9 year old apparently did not even realize what was happening to her until the 7th month. She gave birth last week.

   Doctors at the hospital say mother and baby are now at home and healthy.

   We learned this morning that California, in addition to the US, is suing S&P for $4 billion for fraud in the mortgage crisis rating scandal.

Forty-Niner Relatives Killed after SuperBowl

   The Aunt and Uncle of Delanie Walker were parked on the side of the road in New Orleans following the SuperBowl when a suspected drunk driver hit their car so hard, it killed both of them, and started a fire in both vehicles.

   The woman who hit them at a high rate of speed suffered only minor injuries.

   Congressman Tom McClintock will hold a town hall meeting in Amador County on Wednesday, February 20, 2013 at 6 PM in the Amador County Board of Supervisors at 810 Court Street in Jackson.

Auto Collision in San Andreas

   A report of a collision was reported at 11:18 AM at Hwy 49 and Treat Ave. in San Andreas. No injuries were reported.

   Apparently a red Honda Accord and a silver Chevrolet Tracker were the two vehicles involved. CHP is enroute to the scene.

Traffic Hazard in Vallecito

   11:15 PM:  A traffic hazard has been reported in Vallecito at Hwy 4 and Main Street. It is unclear what the hazard seems to be at this point.

   A CHP unit has been dispatched to the scene.

CHP Day of Animals on the Roads

   A report was called into CHP just before 11 AM, that a cat and a dog are on the bridge at Lower Sacramento Road and Liberty Rd in San Joaquin County.

   The caller said there was also a black chihuahua running in the road at that location. An officer has been dispatched to the area.

Calves at Obyrnes Ferry Rd and Hwy 4

   A caller reported to CHP at 10:41 AM that there are black and white calves in the roadway at Hwy 4 and Obyrnes Ferry Rd. in Copperopolis.

White Dog Chasing Cars in San Andreas

    A caller reported to CHP at 8:20 AM that a big white dog is chasing cars at Mountain Ranch Road and Michel Rd in San Andreas.

   Apparently this is a common event in that area, according to the caller.  The Sheriff's Office was notified of the traffic hazard.
