Traffic Accident at Hwy 4 and Poole Station Rd

   5-31-13:  A traffic accident was reported at 6:19 PM on Hwy 4 at Poole Station Rd. No injuries have been indicated at this time.

   CHP is enroute to the scene. Use extra caution if driving in that area.
  

Fire Reported in Burson

   5-31-13:  A fire was reported at 6:12 PM on Hwy 12 and  Burson Rd in Burson. It isn't yet clear what is burning, but fire officials are now enroute to that location.

   Use extra caution in that area until fire officials handle the fire.

Plastic bags to stay

    A bill to ban plastic grocery bags in California went the way of so many plastic bags- into the trash.  It failed to garner enough votes in the Senate to move it ahead

Hero gets Free McDonalds for a year and....

    Charles Ramsey, the well-spoken hero of the Cleveland rescue of Amanda Berry, not only was given free McDonald's for a year, but he has signed a deal to become a celebrity speaker.

    Ramsey said he didn't want any reward, that he had a job...as a dishwasher.  At least he will get some reward this way. He deserves it.

Sheriff dies in heroic rescue attempt

   The Sheriff of Scott County, Arkansas, who valiantly tried to save another person, was swept away and drowned yesterday, when a flash flood overcame him.

    Many others have been injured in floods in the midwest.

Charges by Attorney in Hadley case for City of Angels Camp

   We just received information that as of April 30, 2013 the City of Angels has racked up $5000 in lawyer fees in the Craig Hadley case.

   Hadley was the Museum Director who was fired abruptly by Michael McHatton, City Adinistration for Angels Camp a few months ago.

Yet another fire in Stockton reported

  5-31-13:   CalTrans has now reported that there is another fire, this time on Hwy 99 at the end of the Hammer Lane offramp.

   There are so many suspicious fire in the Stockton area, especially around the freeways, that someone must be investigating the cause.

Traffic Hazard Reported near Mercer Caverns

   5-31-13:  CHP is responding to a report of a traffic hazard near Mercer Caverns on Sheep Ranch Rd in Murphys.

   The Sheriff's Office is also assisting. The reason for the hazard is not clear at this point.

Overturned vehicle at Pardee

  May 31, 2013:   An overturned vehicle accident was reported to CHP at 12:30 PM at Pardee Dam Road and Campo Seco Rd near Pardee Dam. 

    Two CHP units have been dispatched to the scene. A tow truck has been dispatched as the vehicle in in the middle of the roadway. No injuries have been reported.

Assembly Passes Minimum Wage Bill

   5-31-13:  The California state Assembly today passed a bill that would raise the minimum wage to $8.25 in 2014 and to $9.25 by 2016, and from then on decided by inflation.

   If passed by Senate it would take effect Jan 1, 2014.

Bicyclists blocking road

   5-31-13:  A traffic hazard was reported to CHP at 12:15 PM at the intersection of Mountain Ranch Rd and Sheep Ranch Rd in Mountain Ranch.

   A group of bicyclists are blocking the roadway at that location.  CHP is enroute to the area. Use caution if driving on Mountain Ranch Rd.

   Why is Rand Paul in California?  He says he is touring Silicon Valley and meeting all the big shots.

Elderly Person Walking on Hwy 49

  5-31-13:  A traffic hazard was reported to CHP at 11:46 AM at Hwy 49 and Carol Kennedy Drive. An elderly person is walking and straying into the lane of traffic. One vehicle almost hit the person.

   Use extra caution until CHP can get out there and find out what is wrong.

New Fire at I-5 and March Lane

  Another fire was just reported that started on I-5 at March Lane in Stockton at 11:15 AM, on the offramp there. It might be better if people stay away from that area of I-5 today. If you must take it, be cautious.

Smoke from Fire hampers traffic on Hammer Lane in Stockton

   5-31-13:  A fire that was reported on both sides of Hammer Lane at 10:50 AM near I-5 in Stockton is causing traffic problems due to smoke. Fire crews are at the scene.

  Vehicles are stopping in the lanes and trying to get through fire area. Trees near the roadway are burning. CalTrans says they are shorthanded today, but are trying to get someone out there.

   May 31, 2013: CalFire has just issued a Red Flag Warning for Fire Danger in Northern California,

     May 31, 2013:  A woman called CHP to report that horses are in the roadway at Hwy 26 and Paloma Rd in Valley Springs and she was trying to shoo them out of the road.

   A CHP unit is enroute to that location. Watch carefully if driving in that area.

Traffic Accident in Copperopolis

   May 31, 2013:   CHP is still at the scene of an accident that occurred at Cheyenne Rd and Copper Cove Drive in Copperopolis at 7:10 AM.

    No injuries were reported, but two children were in one of the vehicles.  Use extra caution if driving in that area.

Double Springs residents warm about snakes

   During Public  Comment at the May 28, 2013 Calaveras Board of Supervisors meeting two women from Double Springs warned the public about snakes.

   One said she killed a rattler with 8 buttons on her front porch.  The other said a King snake got into her house and it's still there. She said it was ok though, because King snakes kill rattlers.

Shelton Fire in Linden area

   5:30-13:  Calaveras/Tuolumne units of CalFire responded to a fire on North Shelton Rd in the Linden area around 11:30 AM.

   As of 12:45 PM the fire had burned 60 acres. We don't have any containment numbers yet.

Big Rig blocking Hwy 12 at Toyon

   May 30, 2013:  A traffic hazard on Hwy 12 and Hwy 26 was reported at 12 Noon at Toyon. A big rig stalled and is blocking the roadway.

Quintuplets born in Utah

   Five healthy quintuplets, three girls and two boys were born on Sunday. The mother had taken fertility drugs and had been in the hospital for months.

   In a bill just passed by the Assembly, people convicted of stealing cattle in California will be fined up to $5000. The bill now goes to the Senate.

Fire in Avery

  May 30, 2013 at 10:15 AM:   A fire at Avery Sheep Ranch Rd and Fullen in Avery is now under control. Traffic control was required while firefighters fought this blaze near the roadway.

   The fire is under investigation. As of now the cause is not known.

Some want to strip Boy Scouts of Tax-Exempt Status

  Although the Boy Scouts of American did vote to allow openly gay youths as scouts last week,, some California lawmakers are still pressing for a vote on whether to strip them of their tax-exempt status.

   They still will not allow openly gay leaders in their midst.

Congratulations California State Senate

  We learned that Senate Bill 53 passed today. It requires anyone buying ammuntion to give their fingerprint first. Law abiding legal gun owners should not mind this small preventive measure.

   We congratulate the Senators who care about our children and want to try and prevent senseless killings with guns.

   We received a press release from state Senator Tom Berryhill today and we learned something important. Berryhill now lists his residence as Twain Harte.

Elizabeth Taylor's Wedding Dress at Auction

      Elizabeth Tayor first married at age 18, a beautiful and already famous actress. Her first husband was Conrad Hilton in 1950.

    The wedding gown she wore that day will sell at Christie's in London on June 26, 2013. Count your pennies if you want it. It is expected to sell for more than $75,000.

UPDATE: Explosion at Ione Biomas Plant Equipment Failure

   According to the Amador County Sheriff's Office, the explosion at the BioMass plant in Ione was caused by equipment failure, per one employee.

   The Buena Vista Biomass Power Plant is older and had been remodeled to some degree, in order to burn wood, instead of coal.

  May 29, 2013:   So far we know that one person was injured in an explosion at the Buena Vista Bio-Mass plant in Ione this morning.

Tea Party Michelle Bachman

   Early this morning, Michelle Bachman, Congressional Representative from Minnesota and Tea Party favorite announced that she will not seek re-election next year.

   Some have speculated that an investigation into her Presidential campaign last year and some polls that are showing she cannot win another term influenced her decision.

12 year old back in Calaveras Court

   12-year-old Isaiah Fowler will be back in a Calaveras County courtoom today to enter a plea. It is expected that he will plead not guilty.

   Fowler is being held in Placer County at a juvenile facility.

Paul McCartney visits Graceland

   One musical icon reached out to another on Sunday, May 26, 2013, when Paul McCartney visited Graceland and left one of his guitar picks on the grave of the late Elvis Presley.

   McCartney was in Memphis to play a concert. McCartney said that the pick was "so Elvis can play guitar in heaven," the AP reported.

    May 28, 2013:  Jose Canseco took a polygraph today, that he says shows he is innocent of the rape charges filed against him. He had been accused by a woman in Las Vegas.

White Fire grows overnight

   May 28, 2013:   According to CalFire the White Fire in the Santa Barbara area grew to 1200 acres overnight. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.


    It is 10% contained at this time.

Wet Mother Lode this morning

  May 28, 2013:    Use extra caution driving to work this morning, as we got a significant amount of rain overnight in most of Calaveras, Tuolumne and Amador counties.

Minor Accident at Hwy 26 and Jack Tone Rd.

     May 28, 2013 at 6:16 AM:  CHP just now issued a road clear report after an accident at Hwy 26 and Jack Tone Rd. below Farmington.

   There were minor injuries in the accident, which involved a black Honda Civic and another unidentified vehicle.

White Fire in Los Padres National Forest

  May 27, 2013:   The White Fire, southeast of Lake Cachuma and 12 miles southeast of Santa Ynez started around 2:45 PM today, and has grown to 700 acres.

Fire reported on Hwy 12 at Burson Rd

  At around 10 PM on May 27, 2013 a grass fire was reported on Hwy 12 at Burson Rd in Burson. CHP and fire are enroute to the scene.

Wood on Hwy 49--Jackson area

   At 8:18 PM on May 27, 2013 a caller reported that there is wood spilled on Hwy 49 in the Jackson area.

   Use caution in that area until it is cleaned up. CHP is enroute to the scene.

General Fire in San Diego County now 900 acres

  May 27, 2013:  At 6:30 PM CalFire reported that the General Fire in San Diego County has grown to 900 acres, but is now 42% contained.

   There are 1217 firefighters, 52 engines, 8 helicopters, 4 dozers and 24 watertenders fighting this fire.

  

Traffic accident in Farmington

   Two vehicles were involved in a traffic accident on Hwy 4 at Buckman in Farmington at around 4:25 PM on May 27, 2013.

   CHP is at the scene. No injuries were reported and the vehicles are not blocking the road.

Fire in San Diego area 750 acres

  May 27, 2013 at 7 AM:   The General Fire, the second one in a week near Julian in San Diego County, was reported at noon on May 26, 2013.

   It has now grown to 750 acres. No structures are immediately threatened.

   May 26, 2013 at 7 PM, CHP is responding to a collision where a vehicle backed into a fire engine at 2000 Camanche Rd North Shore.

Missing 75-year-old found wandering on rural road

   May 26, 2013 at 3 PM.  The Calaveras Sherif's Office has issued a cancel on the missing

   6 PM on May 26, 2013:  CHP received a call that at Hwy 99 and Hwy 4 Farmington Rd. exit there is a  dog or a small goat in the roadway.

Pickup hits gate at Poker Flat

   May 26, 2013 at 5:30 PM:    CHP is enroute to the scene of a accident between a green Ford pickup and the gate #2 at Poler Flat Property Owners Association at Obyrnes Ferry Rd and Copper Cove Ct.

   No injuries were reported.

Injury accident in Burson

   5-26-13 at 4 PM:  CHP is at the scene of an accident resulting in injuries at Hwy 12 and Burson Rd in Burson.

   A red vehicle is on its side off the road and into the trees.. An Ambulance has been dispatched to the location.One injured party was taken to Modesto Memorial Hospital.and the other to Kaiser South in Sacramento.

Motorcycle vs pickup and trailer off Hwy 49

   Mry 26, 2013:  At 11 AM CHP received a call of a head on collision between a motorcycle and a pickup pulling a 16' trailer on Drunken Gulch Road off Hwy 49 in the Mariposa area.

   An ambulance has been dispatched due to injuries received. This is a 10 MPH curve. A tow truck capable of hauling a large trailer has been sent to the scene.

"The only thing to do"...at Alaskan Army base?

   A battalion commander at the Space and Missile Defense Command at Fort Greely, Alaska, is now under investigation for allegedly "condoning" adultery and creating what is being called "open season" when it comes to sexual activity among the troops.

   One military official stated "It's as if that was the only thing to do" at the remote base.

Trains collide, cause overpass collapsd in Missourii

   After two freight trains collided early Saturday morning in Missouri, the collapse of a highway overpass was triggered.

   Several rail cars hit a support pillar, causing the collapse. Seven people, at least, were injured in the accident about 120 miles south of St. Louis.

Word of the Day...Redshirting

   Actually, "redshirting" is more of a term that an actual word. It is used to describe what many parents are doing with their kindergarten age children.

    Some are calling it a phenomenon, that is holding their child back one year so that their child will be a little older than the other children and possbly have an advantage. Would you "redshirt" your child?

      At 4:24 PM on May 25, 2013 a single car hit the safety barrels along the side of Hwy 99 at the Farmington Rd exit.

     CHP is enroute to the scene. No injuries were reported but the vehicle is blocking the slow lane.

Fire reported at Hwy 99 and Hwy 26

   5-25-13 at 4:20 PM:  A fire has been reported at Hwy 99 and Hwy 26 in Stockton.  The fire  department is enroute to the scene.

Solo Vehicle runs off the road in Sonora

  May 25. 2013 at 4:15 P: Two CHP are still at the scene of a single car accident at the intersection of Hwy 49 and Hwy 120 in Sonora.

   The vehicle ran off the road at that location. No injuries were reported. Use caution as the tow truck brings the vehicle back onto the roadway.

Trespassers Camping on Private Property

   As often happens on holiday weekends, on May 23, 2013 trespassing was reported to the Calaveras Sheriff's Office on Wagner Road in Railroad Flat.

   The landowner says the motorhome moved about 100' and then came back today with 5 tents along with the motorhome. There is no indication of a citation or arrest in this case.

Burglary reported in Murphys

    On May 23, 2013, a burglary was reported on Possum Trail in Murphys at a residence. A deputy responded to the break in and theft.

   There is no indication of a suspect at this time.

Arrest at Mark Twain Hospital

  On May 24, 2013 Kyle James Connor, (33) of Arnold, was arrested at Mark Twain Hospital for alleged Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Narcotic Substance, both felonies, and for being Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance and Possession of a Hypodermic needle, misdemeanors.

   Connor was booked into the Calaveras County Jail and was released on bond the next day.

Traffic Hazard on Hwy 4 at Pine Drive

    We realize that the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office is nothing even close to the NYPD, but while watching "Pride and Glory" on AMC, we came to scary realizations we don't like.

   It wasn't just that we have seen corruption in our own county Sheriff department, but we've watched how they will cover for each others mistakes, no matter how serious.

   The Sierra Sentinel is aware of protecting personal friends from getting into trouble, and failing to investigate or even file proper reports on things like death threats made by personal friends of the Sheriff.

    May 25, 2013:   A hit and run that was reported last night at 10:15 PM, has an officer returning to the scene as of  8:57 AM today for investigation.

   The damaged vehicle was towed away around midnight last night from Winton Rd and Bummerville Road near Bald Mountain Rd. in West Point.

Affordable Care Act prices low in California

   Yesterday, the state of California released the prices that will be available to lower income residents under the Affordable Care Act.

   Unlike what the Republicans have stated, the prices are very low. Registration will begin in October and will go into effect January 1, 2014.

    Many of the best-known insurers have signed on to be part of the health care initiative.

Google Map updates quickly

   A bridge in Washington State, on I-5, collapsed Thursday nigh. By Friday, Google Maps already reflected the incident.

Traffic Collision in Pioneer

   A traffic accident requiring an ambulance was reported at 10:05 PM on May 24, 2013 in Pioneer.

   An ambulance has been dispatched to 24000 Red Corral Rd at Pine Ridge. CHP is also enroute to the scene.

West Point hit and run

   At 10:15 PM on May 24, 2013 CHP received a call that a hit and run had occurred at Winton Rd and Bummerville Rd in West Point. No injuries were reported.

   The caller said he though a vehicle went over the embankment and he heard running down the driveway.  CHP is enroute to the location.

Immigration reform leads to citizenship?

   The main objection now to the comprehensive immigration bill in the Senate is most Republican lawmakers opposing any route to citizenship for the undocumented immigrants already in the US.

   It makes total sense for them to object, because it is unlikely that any of them will ever vote for the Republicans that showed such discrimination against them. Likely they will be "born again" Democrats.

Traffic Accident in Lockeford

   At 11:52 AM on May 24, 2013 CHP received a call about a traffic accident on Hwy 12 at Bush Street in Lockeford. No injuries were reported.

   CHP is at the scene. One vehicle is stuck in the roadway. One of the vehicles is a small white car. One caller said it was actually Hwy 88 in Lockeford.  A tow truck has been dispatched.

Music in the Parks comes to Copperopolis

Fire in San Diego County 1500 acres

   5-24-13:  CalFire reports that a fire named the San Felipe, which is located near Julian is now 1500 acres. It is now 60% contained after one minor injury to a firefighter.

Military Suicide still a crisis

   Although the Pentagon has set up initiatives to slow its suicide crisis, a new Army report released May 23, 2013 shows the pace of self-inflicted deaths among soldiers -and all service members - has barely budged so far this year.

   The record rate was set during 2012, and through April of 2013 the number is 161 potential suicides among active-duty troops, reservists and National Guard.

Jodi Arias Penalty Trial declared mistrial

   When the jury in the Jodi Arias murder trial couldn't come to an agreement on the penalty portion of the case, it was declared a mistrial by the judge.

   Their choices were either life in prison or death. Now a new jury will be called to rehear the penalty phase of the trial. Arias had been found guilty of 1st degree murder over a week ago.

Bridge collapse on I-5 in Washinton

   Amazingly, no one died when a bridge in Washington State collapsed last night, sending vehicles into the Skagit River below.

   There were some who said a large truck had struck the bridge just before it collapsed, but it has not been confirmed.

   Centered between Greenville and Chester in Plumas County, a 5.7 earthquake shook residents all the way to Sacramento last night.  No reports of serious damage or injury have been reported.

Littering of cement in Avery

   A report was received by the Calaveras Sheriff's office that someone had dumped cement at Calaveras Timber Trails on Avery Sheep Ranch Rd in Avery on May 22, 2013.

    There is no indication of a suspect at this time.

Disturbance at Calaveras High

   An arrest was made after a report was received by the Calaveras Sheriff's Office of a disturbance at Calaveras High School on May 22, 2013.

    No other details have been made available at this time.

Assault Arrest in Valley Springs

   On May 22, 2013 David Joseph Cirone (53) of Valley Springs was arrested by Calaveras Sheriff's Deputies for alleged Assault with a Deadly Weapon, not a Firearm, a felony.

    Cirone was booked into the Calaveras County Jail.

Memorial Day Weekend Fire Danger

   CalFire is warning Californians to be cautious about fire over the Memorial Day Weekend due to elevated fire danger.

Teen Births down 30%

   The Center for Disease Control researchers found that from 2007 to 2011, the overall rate of teen births plummeted a full 30%.

   An 80 year old Japanese mountain climber reached the peak of Mt. Everest, making him the oldest climber to reach the peak.

Oklahoma woman finds treasure

   While hunting for missing belongings, a woman in Oklahoma, whose home was devastated by a tornado, found a treasure.

    Part of a wall that had marks on it where she measured her children's height as they grew brought tears to her eyes as it it was gold.

Children buried in gravel

   Children on a fossil hunting trip yesterday in Minnesota were swept into a deep pit when a hillside of gravel gave way.

   One child died and another is still missing. The hillside was wet with recent rain.

   May 22, 2013 at 4:19 PM:  Calaveras County roads was called out to clear the road of nails that had been spilled at Hwy 4 at Parrotts Ferry Rd in Vallecito.

Air Ambulance for Traffic Accident Victim

   4:56 PM on May 22, 2013:  An air ambulance had to be called for a traffic accident victim at Hwy 99 and Lathrop Road on the overpass, due to serious injuries.

       Two vehicles are blocking the roadway and an air ambulance has been dispatched to Hwy 99 at Lathrop where an accident occurred.

   CHP is enroute to the scene.  Use extra caution if traveling in that area.

Woodson Gets big Payday

   Charles Woodson is returning to play for the Raiders.  At least for one year. He got a $700,000 signing bonus, plus could make up to $4.3 million in the year. After that, who knows.

   The Broncos and 49ers had the opportunity but apparently didn't come up with the right figures.

Two more grass fires near Hwys

   A small grass fire at Hwy 4 and Wilhoit Rd in Stockton and another at Hwy 12 and Thornton are keeping fire department personnel busy this afternoon.

   Actually, there were other small grass fires reported this morning off Hwy 99 and Hwy 88 in that same general area.  We are not aware of any investigation into the rash of roadside fires today.

Ashes of Baby Stolen in Georgia

   A Georgia couple is pleading for the thief who stole the Memory Box, with the ashes of their baby son in it, to please return it.

   It was stolen out of their bedroom, probably believed to have valuables inside.

Person jumping into traffic on Hwy 26

    The Calaveras Sheriff's Office received a call on May 21, 2013 that someone was jumping into traffic at Hwy 26 and Ospital Rd. 

     Now who could that be in that area, hmmm. No one was cited or arrested.

Three Calls for Disturbance in Dorrington

   On May 21, 2013 three calls came in within a 1/2 hour of each other about a verbal dispute on Ute Place in Dorrington.

     A deputy took a report on the first call for violation of a court order. On the next two calls, it shows that nothing was reported by the deputy.

Suspicious person reported at Nugget

     On May 20, 2013 a suspicous person was report at the Nugget Bar on big Trees Rd in Murphys.

      Imagine that! No one was cited or arrested.

Transformer blows, starts fire in Copperopolis

   A transformer apparently blew and caused a fire to start at Surrey Lane and Stagecoach Road in Copperopolis at 12:17 PM on May 22, 2013.

   CalFire was notified. CHP is enroute to that location.

Traffic Accident on Hwy 26 at Jack Tone Rd.

   May 22, 2013:  CHP reports an accident occurred on Hwy 26 at Jack Tone Rd near Stockton at 11:30 AM.

   No injuries were reported. A black Chevy Silverado pickup and a grey Chevy Suburban were involved.

Solo vehicle rollover in Valley Springs

   At 10:40 AM on May 22, 2013 CHP received a call that a single vehicle has rolled over at DaLee Rd at DaLee Ct in Valley Springs. This was on a blind curve, apparently.

   No injuries have been reported. A citizen is out helping with flares and directing traffic.

   May 22, 2013 at 10:19 AM:  An injured deer has been reported on Hwy 49 at Electra, in Amador County, just the other side of the County line.

   At 10:53 AM on May 22, 2013 another fire was reported, this time at the 99 Freeway and Hwy 88 offramp.  Are these cigarettes? Is someone starting fires?

Study Session on Dumping Sewage

   On May 28, 2013, the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors is once again holding a Study Session on what and how much sewage can be dumped and how much they will charge.

   Most waste is now dumped out-of-county due to the high cost of dumping here.

Grass Fire at Hwy 26 and 99 Freeway

  5-22-13 at 9:40 AM: A large   grass fire is burning at Hwy 26 and the 99 Freeway in Stockton.  CalFire has been dispatched. Use caution if driving in that area.

18 foot pythons in Florida?

   A man in Florida pulled an 18 foot Burmese python out of the brush alongside a road and finally killed the 128 lb. snake.

   This beats the last recorded size by over a foot, according to wildlife officials.

  Running back for the Baltimore Ravens, Ray Rice, was the victim of a burglary this past weekend. His home in Maryland was broken into and several things were taken. The home was also ransacked.

Rock Medicine in a tent

    A nurse in Sacramento, who has volunteered for Rock Medicine since 1977, has amazing stories she can tell.

   The group provides medical help to anyone at a concert without judgment and have saved a few lives.

  It was reported that the LA Mayor race may be decided by older voters today. That doesn't surprise us, since a study showed that in two years, 50% of Americans will be over 65 years old.

CalTrans' Bay Bridge-gate

   Governor Brown says he refuses to open the new San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge until all the questions he has have been answered and the bridge is totally deemed safe.

    A Labor Day opening was planned but a bolt problem has CalTrans scurrying to see how serious it is and what they have to do to fix the problems.

   There has been a lot of talk and criticism about Apple Computer's offshore accounts. The President Tim Cook was even called before a committee to be royally chewed out.

Children's bus rolls over in Indiana

Third Arrest Sunday for Firearms

 MIchael Allery Weist, Jr. (32) of Murphys was arrested on Williams Street Sunday, May 19, 2013, for allegedly being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Possession of a Short Barrel Shotgun or Rifle, and for Altering a Firearm ID Mark, all felonies.
 
    Weist was booked into Calaveras County Jail by deputies.  This is the third firearm offense of the day for the Calaveras Sheriff's office.

Lodi man arrested at Hogan Observation Point

   Andrew Scott Wathen, (29) of Lodi, was arrested on Sunday May 19, 2013 at Hogan Observation Point for allegedly having a Concealed Firearm on him, a felony.

Copperopolis man arrested with illegal firearm

   According to the Calaveras County Sheriff, Jerry Leon Harman,  (55) of Copperopolis was arrested at his residence on Surrey Lane for alleged Battery, a misdemeanor and for being a Felon in possession of a Firearm, a felony.

   Harman was booked into the Calaveras County Jail on Sunday May 19, 2013.

O J Simpson seeks new trial

   After serving 5 years for his conviction of armed robbery and kidnapping in 2007 in Nevada, OJ Simpson is seeking a new trial, based mostly on his claim that his attorney did not do a proper job of defending him.

   Simpson had been attemping to retrieve his own belongings, memoriabilia which had been stolen from him years earlier. Simpson is now 65.

Two dozen WWII vets at Pearl Harbor

   Two dozen of the surviving WWI vets from the aircraft carrier USS Franklin, gathered on Friday for most likely the last time, to honor and remember the late winter morning of 1945.

CHP still at accident scene in San Andreas

    5-18-13:  An accident that occured around 5:16 PM in San Andreas at Hwy 49 and Union Mine Rd. is still being investigated by CHP at this time.

   An ambulance responded to take an injured party to the hospital. A red Ford 250 ran off the road and through a fence. A two truck was dispatched to pull the truck up which is around 60' over the side.

4 x 4 Rollover on Hwy 4

   A Nissan Frontier hit the embankment and rolled over on Hwy 4 near Vista Point below Copperopolis around 1:20 PM.

   No injuries have been reported, A tow truck and CHP have responded.

   CalFire reports that as of 5-18-13 the Grand Fire south of Frazier Park in Kern and Ventura counties is now 4,358 acres, but is 70% contained.

Vehicle hits fence and then runs

   A vehicle hit a fence at Hwy 26 and Quail Oaks in Valley Springs and then left. CHP was notified and is responding. No injuries were reported.

Fire Reported on Hwy 12 at Mokelumne River

   At 3 PM a fire was reported at the bridge location on Hwy 12 at the Mokelumne River.  CalFire was notified and is enroute.

Maloof's are out...don't let the door hit you

    The NBA's Sacramento Kings have new owners today, and Mayor Kevin Johnson is not unhappy that the Maloof brothers are now out.

   The major new owner paid $10 million more than the Maloofs originally asked for, but isn't complaining.

Unemployment drops slightly

   California's unemployment rate dropped to 9.0% from 9.4% as of April 2013, as 10,000 jobs were added. Calaveras County's rate of unemployment show to be 10.5%.

   Many say it's only that low because so many have completely dropped out of the workforce and are either on welfare or have moved away to get work.

   Another tragic accident that occurred at Jack Tone Rd and Louise Ave at approximately 11:18 AM resulted in a fatality.

Ex-Charger RB Chuck Muncie dies

    A former San Diego Charger, three-time All-pro running back, Chuck Muncie, who was known for his imposing size and powerful style, has died. He also had played for the Saints.  He was 60.

10,000 mile trek ends in tragedy

   A Seattle man who was trying to dribble a soccer ball 10,000 miles to Brazil in time for the 2014 World Cup died on Tuesday, May 15, 2013, after being hit by a pickup on the Oregon Coast, according to police.

   Apparently 42 year-old Richard Swanson was hit at about 10 AM while walking south along US Hwy 101 near the Lincoln City, Oregon city limits. The driver has not been charged.

  According to CalFire at at 8:15 AM, the Grand Fire in Ventura county is now 4100 acres and is 35% contained.

   This fire is located in both Kern and Ventura counties south of Frazier Mountain Park Rd. The cause of this fire is under investigation.

   A geologist discovered a puddle of water in a 2 mile deep mine in Canada. After testing the water, it was found to be around 2.6 billion years old. It was trapped between rocks.

   

Associated Press put Americans "at risk"?

   Attorney General Eric Holder says that the secret subpoenas of Associated Press phone records was justified because they felt that the AP was putting the American people "at risk".

   It seems absulutely ludicrous to many, who say they overreached their authority and that the press has a right to investigate.

  At around 12:20 PM on May 16, 2013, CHP was notified of a two car collision at Hwy 49 and Hwy 16 in Jackson.

   No injuries were reported and both vehicles are reportedly off the highway at this time.

10 year old sentenced to 5 1/2 years

   In Seattle a 10-year-old boy was sentenced on May 15, 2013 to up to 5 1/2 years in a jurvenile detention facility for his role in a foiled plot to rape and kill a girl at his school.

   He was charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, firearm possession and witness tampering. A 10-year-old?

    What's going on in this country? We have a 12 -year-old in jail due to a murder in Calaveras County. Is there no end to violence in our society, at all ages?

   At 11:50 AM on May 16, 2013, a traffic hazard was reported to CHP on Hwy 4 at Highland Lake Rd in Ebbetts Pass above Arnold.

   An arrest was made at Mark Twain Hospital on June 16, 2013 for Possession and possible manufacturing and selling of a Short Barreled Shotgun.

     Tina Marie Lindow (30) of Valley Springs was arrested for the alleged Felony. Lindow was booked into the Calaveras County Jail and released on bond.

Protesting Bad Air in China

   About 1000 chanting demonstrators took to the streets of Kunming,  a southern city in China yesterday, to protest the governemtns plans for a state oil refinery.

   Some carried signs with "PX--get out of Kunming" referring to a chemical called paraxylene, used for making plastic products.  It is dangerous if inhaled or absorbed.

Huge Diamond sold at auction

   A pear-shaped colorless diamond that is the largest ever offered at auction sold for a record of nearly $27 million in a Geneva auction.

    Records were also set for the prices of pearls and sapphires according the Christies. The diamond is 101.73 carats called the "Winston Legacy" diamond, was bought by Harry Winston's.

Traffic Accident at Hwy 12 and Central Hill Rd

  10:10 AM on May 16, 2013:   CHP is still at the scene of a traffic accident that occurred around 9:25 AM at Hwy 12 and Central Hill Rd in San Andreas.

   An ambulance was dispatched, but apparently the patient took off and then hit a bridge. The drivers keys were taken from him at that time.  A tow truck has been sent to the location.

   On May 20, 2013, Calaveras Local Agency Formation Commission will hold its regular monthly meeting in the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors Chambers at the County Center in San Andreas.

   The meeting begins at 6 PM. On the agenda is the dissolution of the Jenny Lind and Foothill Fire Protection Districts and the formation of the Calaveras Consolidated Fire Protection District.

   This is a major development in that area, since these two fire departments have had nothing but problems. The new department should work out well for the area.

Bay Area man arrested in Copperopolis

   On May 12, 2013 Earl Linwood Pike, Jr. (44) of Campbell, was arrested by CHP on Hwy 4 west of Littlejohn Rd.

    Pike was arrested for alleged Vehicle Theft and for Receiving Stolen Property over $400, both felonies. He was booked into Calaveras County jail, posted bond and was released on May 13, 2013.

Sacramento woman gets 63 days in jail

   A woman who apparently waiting outside the Sacramento County jail for several hours earlier this week, slapped the first deputy who appeared.

   The judge sentenced her to 63 days in jail.  She stated that she wanted to quit smoking and that she intended to go to jail in order to quit.

26 Elephants killed in Sanctuary

   A group of armed poachers went into an elephant sanctuary and killed 26 forest elephants in Central Africa this week.

Two Astronauts on Spacewalk for repairs

   5-11-13:  NASA has two astronauts working outside the International Space Station this morning, attempting to repair a leak of ammonia.

Dead Surfer found on San Diego beach

   5-10-13: A surfer washed up dead near a San Diego beach early Thursday with wounds consistent with a shark attack.

   The 42-year-old man, had been attacked after he died under other unusual circumstances in the water-possibly suicide. The man was found naked.

Chicago hires goats...

   The airport at O'Hare is overrun with high weeds and grass..  This year, instead of spraying weedkiller or hiring weedeaters, they hired 25 goats.

   Due to be delivered, including their goatherder, they will hopefully happily consume the problem.
