"Who Framed Roger Rabbit's" Bob Hoskins dies

   Bob Hoskins died of pneumonia yesterday at the age of 71.  He was the star of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" and was one of the pirates in "Hook".

   Hoskins leaves his wife and four children. He had been diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease and was retiring from acting.

   The Calaveras Chamber of Commerce is encouraging business owners in Calaveras County to participate in a drought-related impact on jobs.

   They are asking you to call the local County Career Centers. For Calaveras the number is 754-4242, in Amador the number is 223-3341, in Tuolumne its 588-1150 if you would like to participate in the statewide survey.

Chopping trees down on Hwy 4

   On April 29, 2014 someone at the  Kwik Serve in Arnold reported that someone was cutting down trees and had a campfire nearby.

   The Calaveras Sheriff was notified but no report was taken.

Another Burglary in Arnold

   A man who was cleaning a lot for a property owner on April 29, 2014 reported to the Calaveras Sheriff that the house had been broken into on Meadow Drive in Arnold.

   One door had been kicked in and the other looked as if someone had tried to break in. It was unknown what had been taken. There seems to be no end to the burglaries in Arnold. A deputy took a report.

Start your own Frog Jumping Team?

   According to a press release from the Calaveras County Fair, this year you can form your own 6 person Frog Jumping Team.

  On May 6, 2014 the Amador County Board of Equalization meets at 9 AM in the Board Chambers on Court Street in Jackson.

Two Explosion reports in Copperopolis

   Two calls were received at the Calaveras Sheriff's Office about explosions that shook the homes on Quill and on Iroquois in Copperopolis around noon on April 29, 2014.

   We are shocked that no report was made by the Sheriff.

Fresno most polluted US city?

   Who knew? Well, I guess the people who live there knew the air was bad. But #1? Visalia #2, Bakersfield #3, LA came in #4 and Modesto also made the top ten at #5.

   California has some work to do on its air clean up. This is according to the American Lung Associations most recent study.

Calaveras Supervisors hold "Special Meeting" attending COG meeting at Ironstone

  UPDATE:  We just received a revised announcement stating that the Calaveras Board of Supervisors is issuing a "Courtesy Notice" that THEY are all attending a Policy Conference witht the Calaveras Council of Governments (COG) today, April 40 2014 at Ironstone Vineyards.

   It is NOT open to the public unless you previously paid and reserved in advance. It is NO LONGER a Special Meeting of the Board.  Nice of them to let us know!!

   The Sentinel had sent an email to the CAO asking where Public Comments was on the agenda for their Special Meeting and apparently that was an error on the Board Clerk's part. This is the reply.

McClintock stutters his way through Iran question

   At a meeting of conservative news and businessmen in New York yesterday, Congressman Tom McClintock did not make his constituents back home proud.

   In fact, after stammering and hedging and hawing his way, and having people in the back, say "Answer the question" he never did give a satisfactory answer to the question of "what do we do about Iran." The audience was NOT happy, but neither are his constituents here at home.

Union Public Utility District meets

   On Wednesday, April 30, 2014 the UPUD (Union Public Utility District) or water in Murphys will hold a special meeting at 7 PM at their office at 339 Main Street in Murphys.

   On the agenda is a rate study report and you know what that means! Also listed is the contract with UPA and insurance renewal.

Shooting at FedEx facility

  Apparently a package handler at a FedEx facility near Atlanta, Georgia used a shotgun to wound 6 employees, some critically.

   The shooter was found dead later on a loading dock, according to authorities.

Calaveras Supervisors meet tonight April 29, 2014

        The Calaveras Supervisor plan to meet at 6 PM tonight,  April 29, 2014 in their Board Chambers in San Andreas.
  
   On the agenda is appointing Megan K. Stedtfeld as interim County Counsel for 6 months beginning June 28, 2014.  Janis Elliot is retiring.

Toyota moving to Texas

   In a move to cut costs, Toyota announced today that it is moving a large portion of its automaker from Torrance, California to Plano, Texas.

   The Prius and the Camry are manufactured currently in Torrance.

NBA bans Clippers Owner Sterling for LIFE!

   Apparently, the NBA is not hesitating on its chastisement of the NBA Clippers owner Sterling. He has been banned from the NBA team for life.

E-Smokers Protest Ban

   Around 300 e-smokers protested at what they called a "vape-in" in Manhattan last night over a ban on e-cigarettes in public buildings.

   The interesting thing about it is that the "vape-in" was held at the Manhattan Museum of Sex.

   Robert Raymond Kearns died at his home in Arnold on April 22, 2014. He was born on October 24, 1926 in Walker, Minnesota.

   We just learned that popular former Congressman George Radanovich has officially endorsed Art Moore in his bid to represent California's 4th District.

Traffic Accident in San Andreas

     April 29, 2014 at 10:30 AM:  CHP is en route to a traffic accident reported in San Andreas on St. Charles Street at Main Street. A white Chevy pickup and a white Honda Accord are involved.

   An ambulance is also en route to the scene.

Tea Party Congressman arrested

  Tea Party Congressional Representative Michael Grimm of New York has been arrested for 20 federal counts of alleged fraud, including misreporting revenue and accepting illegal campaign donations.

NBA's Clippers lose Sponsors

  Kia Motors and Virgin, among others, have at least temporarily halted their sponsorship of the NBA's Clippers due to the owners alleged racist remarks.

South Korean Ferry was carrying too much

   As the investigation into the South Korean Ferry sinking that killed so many high school children widens, it has been revealed that the Ferry was carrying three times the legal weight limit it could safely carry below decks, per an inspector.

  According to CHP, on April 28, 2014 around 3:45 PM Glenn Dragomanovich (56) of San Andreas was driving a 1988 Peterbilt on Hwy 12 west of Central Hill Rd.

Sierra Macintosh Users Group meets

  On May 13, 2014 the Sierra Macintosh Users Group (SMUG) meets at 7 PM in the assembly room of the Ebbetts Pass Fire Department in Arnold.

   The topic will be computer security and will be presented by Seth Summersett, a professional computer programmer. Meetings are open to everyone at no charge.

Illegal Shooting reported in Railroad Flat

  On April 28, 2014 around 10:45 and 10:50 PM two calls were received from the Railroad Flat Rd and Ridge Rd area of Railroad Flat.

   Both calls reported shooting near their homes. No report was taken by the Sheriff.

Congressional candidate Art Moore yesterday spent the afternoon visiting Sierra College and its Veterans center in particular.

   A veteran himself, Art Moore would not vote against veterans benefits as the incumbent Congressman does.  He is well-received by the younger voter.

Tea Party likes Socialism?

   Apparently we were wrong about the Tea Party. With their frontrunner unabashedly voting again and again for redevelopment; the taking of private land at a cheap price for crony politics and socialist gain, we now realize Tea Party members are NOT property rights at all.

   Their hero and the Tea Party leader for Governor against Jerry Brown proves that the Tea Party is a socialist leaning organization, away from property rights, not in favor of them.

Paul Simon arrested in Connecticut?

   It seems that Paul Simon and his wife had an altercation, one of them dialed 911 and hung up; then the police appeared and one of them got shoved.

   This is what is alleged in a Disorderly Conduct charge brought against the singer that apparently occurred at their home.

Utah Woman faces 6 1st degree Murder charges

  A woman in Utah is facing 6 1st degree murder charges after 6 babies were found inside boxes in her garage 2 weeks ago.

   Apparently it is alleged that she killed the babies and put them in the boxes shortly after giving birth to them.

California High School Graduation rate up

   According to State Schools Chief Tom Torlakson, the California high school graduation rate tops 80% this year. That is quite an improvement.

"Kissing" Congressman won't run for re-election

    Although Republican Congressman Vance McAllister of Louisiana has announced he won't be running for re-election, he has not offered to step down before his term is up.

   This supposed religious conservative was caught on video kissing an aide.

Tea Party Frontrunner says its "Scary"!

   We did hear a bit of the truth from the man who says he is in the lead for the frontrunner status among the Tea Party running for Governor.

    He has absolutely no chance to win against Jerry Brown (unless all the others dropped dead) and he admits it's "scary". Yes, we find the recent Tea Party candidate "scary" too! Him, along with the naked Tea Party woman on political advertisements running for office.

Car hits bank in San Andreas

   According to CHP on April 27, 2014 around 12:50 PM Cristie Stewart (33) of Stockton was driving a 2000 Ford westbound on Mountain Ranch Road approximately 45 MPH.

   For unknown reasons Mrs. Stewart allowed her car to leave the road and strike the embankment.

   Mrs. Steward was transported by ambulance to Mark Twain Medical Center with minor injuries. Mountain Ranch Rd was restricted to one-way traffic control for approximately 20 minutes while being cleared.

"The Other Woman" takes box office

   Turns out "The Other Woman" took over the top at the box office last weekend.  It raked in $24 million, putting "Captain America " in 2nd place.

   Gloria Dolores Gemberling, daughter of Robert and Maude Kauffan, was born March 20, 1933 and entered into eternal rest on April 14, 2014.

   On April 26, 2014 at around 1:35 PM Christopher Fohlen (30) of Santa Rosa was driving a 2004 Ford in the northbound lane of Hwy 49 near San Domingo Creek at an unknown speed.

Seminole Code Talker "walks on" in Oklahoma

   Edmond Andrew Harjo, a Seminole from Oklahoma who received the Medal of Honor last fall at
the White House, "walked on" March 31, 2014.

   President Obama honored those from WWI and WWII who had been overlooked due to nationality and race over the years.

Traffic Hazard in Copperopolis

   April 27, 2014:  A traffic hazard was reported in Copperoplis around 8:30 AM. A CHP unit has been dispatched to the scene.

   It isn't clear what the hazard is but be careful around Cheyenne and Copper Cove Drive.

    Louise Giannini Spence, a lifelong resident of Calaveras County, died quietly at home on April 24, 2014.

Arrests made in Calaveras County

   April 26, 2014:  CHP arrested a person at Hwy 12 and Double Springs Rd on April 25, 2014 and a disturbance in the Black Bart parking lot in San Andreas resulted in an arrest, according to Sheriff logs.

   No other details on these arrests are known at this time.

Sheriff takes report at gun store

    April 25, 2014:  The Calaveras Sheriff was called and took a report on a Suspicious Person call from a gun store in the Valley Springs area.

   No other details are available at this time.

Chains required on Hwy 4

   April 26, 2014:   Due to the low snow last night, chains are required this morning at Camp Connell on Hwy 4. Use extra caution as the roads are slippery.

  The lower elevations of the county got thunderstorms with a pounding rain. We need whatever we can get, though.

From "OUR HERO" to oops, uh, well......."Cliven who?"

   Cliven Bundy seems to have been discarded by FOX and other Tea Party types after he made public his disdain for people of color on tape.

   Sean Hannity of FOX and others had declared Mr. Bundy a "hero" and were promoting him daily. Many Tea Party "patriots?" are still behind him. (shhhh--you weren't supposed to admit who you really are on tape, Cliven ol' buddy, ol' pal!)

50 Days and No Sign of Flight 370

   After 50 days of searching and 95% of the first search area covered by the Bluefin, not one piece of debris or wreckage, nor sign of the Malaysian plane that disappeared has been found.

   The say that now they will move the search north and continue looking at the bottom of the ocean.

USFS wants more input?

   The April 30, 2014 Sierra Cascades Dialog Session has not received as many registrants as they would like, so they are extending the registration to include this Monday, April 28, 2014.

   This session is to explore the range of public views on desired conditions for the Sierra Nevada National Forests and will be held at the Lions Gate Hotel in North Highlands. Call Deb at 760-873-2427 for information.

Drop the Drugs in Angels Camp

   The Angels Camp Police Department is conducting a "Drop the Drugs" day at the Office of Education in Angels Camp today, April 26, 2014.

  From 10 AM to 2 PM you may clean out and dump your old unused, expired or illegal drugs with no questions asked.

Burn Permits Required

   CalFire has just issued a press release indicating that as of Thursday, May 1, 2014 the Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire) will require burn permits for any outdoor burning within the State Responsibility Areas (the $150 you pay per home) of Tuolumne County, Calaveras County, Eastern Stanislaus County and Eastern San Joaquin County.

   Due to the exceptionally dry conditions, burning will be limited to the hours between 7 PM and 8 AM.  The usual rules apply as to size of piles and safety.

Traffic Hazard in Mokelumne Hill

   April 25, 2014:  CHP received a report of an abandon vehicle partially blocking Hwy 26 at Ponderosa in Mokelumne Hill near the bottom of the Robinson Grade.

   At 2:19 PM a tow truck was dispatched to the scene. No injuries were reported.

Two Big Rigs cited stuck in deep snow

   At 8:58 AM a big rig was reported as a traffic hazard to CHP stuck in deep snow on Hwy 88 at Shot Rock in Amador County.

   At 10:45 AM the same truck was reported.  Then at Noon a second big rig was stuck. Neither had the proper chains in place and the snow was too deep to install chains.  Both were cited by CHP.

Ford Focus hits center divide at Hwy 99 and Farmington exit

   April 25, 2014:  CHP is en route to a Grey Ford Focus that hit the center divide around 1:37 PM, the caller indicating a utility truck was the cause of the accident.

   The utility truck is pulled over at the Farmington exit. No indication of injuries yet. One witness stated that the utility truck pulled over in front of the Focus without proper signaling.

Jackson City Council meets

  
On April 28, 2014 at 7 PM the Jackson City Council meets at City Hall on Broadway in Jackson.

   On the agenda is the annexation of Stonecreek Subdivision to Maintenance District No. 1, a public hearing.

   Also on the agenda is resolutions to cooperate with Caltrans for Traffic Signal Emergency Vehicle Detection and "Betterment" work at the Intersections of Hwy 49 and Sutter Street, Hwy 49 and French Bar, with possible action.

Chains Required on Hwy 4, Hwy 88, Hwy 108

   April 25, 2014:  As of Noon, chains are required on Hwy 4 about 4.5 miles east of Arnold to Bear Valley.

   Hwy 88 is now closed from east of Silver Lake to Kirkwood due to avalanche control.  Also, Hwy 108 is closed east of Strawberry to Hwy 395.

Arrest Made at the Nugget Bar!

   UPDATE:  This is awhile after the Murphys Chevron on Hwy 4 reported a suspect shoplifted liquor from the back of the store and left on foot headed towards Church Street.

   According to their website, the Saddle Creek Homeowners election of their Board of Directors is today at 3 PM at the Sports Center.  Already there is controversy over the improper handling of envelope inserts for the vote.

  

  

Pickup runs off Hwy 88

  April 25, 2014:  At 9:35 AM a grey Dodge pickup was reported having run off the road at Hwy 88 just above Bear River.

   No injuries were reported. CHP and a tow truck are en route to the scene.

Pope John II crucifix falls and crushes man

   A 94 foot crucifix in Italy, dedicated to Pope John Paul II, fell yesterday and crushed one man to death.

  Pope John Paul II is scheduled to be made a Saint in the next few days. One other man was hospitalized.

   Could that be considered a "sign from God"?

  According to zoo officials a female zebra has given birth to a half zebra, half donkey at a northern Mexico zoo.

   It has striped legs but and donkey back. Cute, though.

open ocean.

  It reported broke off of Pine Island and is one of the largest ever.

Postal Workers Union Protests Helping Americans

In a move towards a more friendly, available and less expensive way to run the Post Offices across America, management has  contracted post offices be installed inside Staples stores.

    What a wonderful idea everyone says--except the Union Postal Workers. They are protesting in several states, afraid that the USPS might save the American citizen some money.  Heaven forbid!!!

Woman Missing in Tuolumne County

      On April 22, 2014 Patricia Sue Tolhurst was reported missing. She was last seen on April 18, 2014 and her vehicle, a white Toyota 4-runner was located at Donnell Vista on April 22, 2014.

   The vehicle appeared to be abandoned, with Tolhursts property, purse, etc. still inside. Tuolumne Search and Rescue is actively searching the area.  If you should have any information or know her whereabouts, please call the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office at 533-5815.

Trout Season Opens--Pig Hunt Permits for Merced County

   California Department of Fish and Wildlife is announcing that they are trying to stock as many rivers and lakes as possible before opening day of trout season on April 26, 2014. The drought has made this more difficult.

  Also,  limited number (30 per day) of permits will be issued to hunt pig and deer opening weekend August 9, 10, 2014 in Merced County.   This will be in the San Luis Reservoir and Cottonwood Creek areas. Call 826-0423 for more information.

Take-Back Days in Tuolumne County

   On Friday, April 25 and Saturday April 26, 2014 from 10 AM to 2 PM the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office is holding Take-Back Days where you can drop off old or expired medications.

  Either in the upper parking lot at Mary Laveroni Park in Groveland or at the Junction Shopping Ctr in Sonora at Mono Way and Tuolumne Rd. are drop-off locations.

Sunken 1888 ship located in San Francisco Bay

 
The City of Chester, a ship that collided with another ship back in 1888, was located in San Francisco Bay near the Golden Gate Bridge.

   16 passengers went down with the ship when it sunk.

Michael Phelps back in training

   After gaining weight and missing being in the water, Michael Phelps is back in training every day.

   He says he's going to the Rio Olympics, whether to swim or to sit in the stands with his mother. He is the most winning American Olympian in history.

Even NY Times notices Congressman in trouble

   Good old California is a long way from New York, but with the top two primary in California, everyone is interested in one particular race. The New York Times is reporting it.

   The LOOONNNG time Congressman who has represented Calaveras County and the surrounding area for a long time but has NEVER lived here, is in BIG trouble.  Art Moore, a veteran and Bronze Star recipient is the most popular candidate right now in most informal polls we've taken.

   Last week we heard that John Bohner was not allowed in one Senate members office and that if they met it had to be in Bohner's office.

   When asked why, he stated that Bohner has a serious nicotine addiction and smoking problem and he won't allow it in his office. Whoa!

CHP just clearing Hwy 99 big rig crash

     April 23, 2014 at 9:15 AM:  The road is just now being cleared at Hwy 99 and Hwy 120 where a big rig overturned around 7:15 AM.

   No injuries were reported in the accident.

  

Frog Jump goes to California State Capitol

   The annual Sacramento State Capitol Frog Jump will take place on April 30, 2014 on the East
Lawn of the Capitol building around 11:30 AM.

   The lawmakers at the California Capitol will vie for both trophies and bragging rights.

East Bay MUD buys $8 million worth of water


  Due to the drought conditions, the East Bay Municipal Utility District which supplies water for 1.3 million customers in the Bay Area, we just learned has bought $8 million worth of water from the Sacramento River. This could result in a surcharge for their customers.

  This purchase will give them approximately 16,000 acre feet more water, which is good for about one month. EBMUD owns Pardee Reservoir and says they are paying for this from monies received from a sale of property in Castro Valley.

Honey Oil Explosion in Truckee

   A house in Truckee exploded during Douglas Hall's alleged attempt to extract THC from marijuana in his garage.

   Honey Oil is the name of the extract. Police found 1000 empty cans of butane, several pounds of marijuana and finished Honey Oil worth around $1500 in the house.  His girlfriend suffered burns trying to put the fire out.

Calaveras County Arts Council Best of Show

  The Calaveras County Arts Council has announced that the winner of Best of Show for the 17th Annual High School Art Show is Mikayla Kunesh from Bret Harte High School.

   The title of the piece is "Silenced". It can be seen at the Gallery Calaveras at 22 Main Street in San Andreas.

Mule Creek escapees caught

   The two inmates who escaped from the Mule Creek prison, Patrick Raines and Johnny Maciel, have been apprehended by authorities.

   A rancher in Plymouth spotted them and reported it to authorities at the prison.

Murphys Sanitary District Special Board meeting

   On Wednesday, April 23, 2014 the Murphys Sanitary District is holding a Special Board meeting to discuss the budget for 2014/2015.

    The public is welcome to attend. The time is 9 AM at the office on 90 Big Trees Rd.

Teenage Boy flies to Hawaii in wheel well

   Hard to believe, but the videos show it must be true that an unhappy teenager in San Jose got himself stowed away in the wheel-well of a jet to Hawaii.

   Authorities aren't sure how he survived the cold or the altitude, but he did somehow.

Did you see Liv Warfield on Letterman?

   You know, these days you don't see much of what we call great music on the late shows. However, Thursday night was different.

   A gal named Liv Warfield, who we had never heard of, performed a song called "Blackbird" with accompaniment by around 6 saxophones, trombones, etc. all around her.  Blew Mr. Letterman and us out of our seats!  Check it out at David Letterman/Liv Warfield sings "Blackbird". Amazing!!!

Calaveras County Water District April 2014

   The Calaveras County Water District (CCWD) meets on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at 9 AM in their Boardroom in San Andreas.

   We commend the current Board of Directors for now filming and making available their meetings for the public who cannot attend in person.

"Mrs Doubtfire" sequel

   Rumors are that there is a "Mrs. Doubtfire" sequel in the works. The original was a box office winner and is till shown on movie channels often.

   The youngest child star, however, says she is not interested in returning to the "doubtfire" story in any way.

General Motors seeks protection against lawsuits

   Apparently 30 more lawsuits have been filed against GM regarding its faulty ignition switches over the years. 13 have reportedly been killed and there have been numerous crashes as a result.

  GM has now officially requested the bankruptcy court to block all lawsuits regarding the switches during the time of the bankruptcy.

Two inmates escape from Mule Creek Prison

   Two male inmates apparently walked away from the minimum security prison at Mule Creek in
Ione, Amador County.

   Patrick Raines, serving time for carjacking, and Johnny Maciel, serving time for 2nd degree burglary until 2016, are now wanted. If you see them, call the Amador County Sheriff's Office or 911.

Oakland Residents arrested near Casino

   According to the Tuolumne County Sheriff's Department, on Wednesday April 16, 2014 around 2:30 PM deputies were dispatched to the Black Oak Casino regarding possible credit card fraud.

George Segale of Valley Springs
