Cal Fire warns about Christmas trees

Light up an outside tree.
   Cal Fire has issued a warning to homeowners about their Christmas trees getting too dry, as they don't want to have to come to your house a put out a fire this season.

   Follow all the safety guidelines, give it plenty of water, and if its too dry, don't turn on the lights.

Traffic Collision in Sonora

  December 18, 2014 at 2:50 PM:  A traffic collision between a white Toyota Prius and a silver sedan has resulted in minor injuries in Sonora.

   The collision took place at Covey Circle and Cabezut Road.  CHP is at the scene.

  It seems that even in a non-election year the Calaveras County elections office has to keep paying the Post Office $685 for maintenance and $200 for permit fees for bulk mailings.

Santa Claus rally on Wall Street

   Stocks jumped another 400 points today, as the so-called Santa Claus rally continued on Wall Street.

   Jim Cramer, of CNBC warned people not to jump in now and "chase" stocks hoping for a winner. He suggests waiting for a downturn.

Another crash in Lockeford

   December 18, 2014 at 1:15 PM:  Another collision has been reported at Hwy 88 near North Ashley Lane in Lockeford, not far from the earlier incident.

   No injuries have been reported in this collision. Please drive carefully!


New CCWD Board--Immediately lower rates???

   The CCWD elections were based on what was called overpriced rates for water in Calaveras County.

   Now we'll see if Bertha Underhill, Terry Strange and Dennis Mills will really lower the cost of water like they said.

Don't tell Ollie//Loose Horse at Hwy 4 and Parrotts Ferry Road

  December 18, 2014 at 12:45 PM:  A multi-colored horse has been reported loose at Hwy 4 and Parrotts Ferry Road in Vallecito.

   Use extra caution until someone can get on scene and move it back into a pasture. And don't tell Ollie!

Global Warming Continues

   The National Oceanic and Atmospheric administration just released a report that shows the earths temperatures were at a 44,000 year high in 2014.

   The Emperor Penguin breeding ground could be losing enough ice to cause the penguins and polar bears are already suffering from the change.

   Today is the last day of the Colbert Report with Stephen Colbert.  Many of us will miss his delightful faux conservative reports, where he makes fun of Bill O'Reilly of FOX News.

Man found dead inside Lathrop home

   Authorities are treating the death as suspicious after finding a man dead inside a Lathrop home late yesterday.

   Apparently someone called and stated that someone was "down". No name has yet been released.

Executed in 1944, cleared in 2014

    More than 70 years after George Stinney was executed in South Carolina for beating to death two young white girls, a judge today exonerated the 14 year old, stating he never committed the crime.

    We are no longer shocked this type of racism went on back then and continues to this day. Members of Stinney's family were present for todays announcement.

"The Interview" gets lots of promotion

   Due to the hacking of Sony's computers, the movie "The Interview", which was due to be released on Christmas Day, is being held back.

   The movie has certainly received a lot of free publicity and will most likely do even better when it is released. 

Tree down on Hwy 49

   December 18, 2014 at 11:20 AM:  A tree has fallen in the roadway on Hwy 49 near Fricot Ranch Road. PG&E is apparently coming with a chainsaw, as power lines could be affected.

   Use extra caution if headed for that area.  Both lanes are affected on Hwy 49.

How did President Obama keep the secret?

   The most surprising part about the new normalization with Cuba is that they have been working on it for 18 months in secret and that the Pope was involved.

     Can't remember when any administration has not had leaks about everything that was supposed to be secret.  Kudos to President Obama!!

Geese late flying south

Seems late, but geese are still leaving our area,
heading south for the winter.

Vehicle rollover on Hwy 59

   December 18, 2014 at 10 AM:  A vehicle has run off Hwy 59 near East Mission in Merced and rolled over and is currently on it's side.

  An ambulance is en route to the scene.

Hit and run on Hwy 4

   December 18, 2014 at 9:15 AM:  A hit and run collision has been reported at Hwy 4 and Milton Road in Calaveras County.

   The vehicle that left the scene was possible a dark gray sports car, maybe a Scion with 2 males inside. No injuries were reported.

   UPDATE:  This collision has been cleared by CHP.

UPDATE:  At least one person required medical treatment in this accident.

Vehicle hits fence and leaves

   December 18, 2014 at 8:40 AM:  A vehicle reportedly ran through a fence and into a yard and then left the scene on Valley Oak Drive in Oakdale.

   CHP is at the scene. No injuries were reported.

Trailer blown off roadway in Manteca

   December 18, 2014 at 8 AM:  A trailer was blown off the roadway at Hwy 120 and South Main Street in Manteca.

   Emergency personnel are en route to the scene. No injuries were reported, but the trailer went down an embankment.

Hit and Run on Hwy 99

   December 18, 2014 at 6:15 AM:  A hit and run was reported near Hwy 99 at Arch Road in Stockton. No injuries have been reported.

   Three CHP units have been dispatched to attempt to catch the vehicle involved and to assist the victim on Hwy 99.

Watch for Fog!

  December 18, 2014:  If you are headed for the valley today, watch for fog and slow down. We are in between storms.

   Although it should be cloudy, it is not expected to rain during the day today. Another storm is headed our way for Friday.
