Four chased and arrested for jewelry theft

   After a police chase, authorities arrested four people in the San Francisco area for the robbery of a jewelry store

Roadway Flooding in Chowchilla

   CHP is en route to Hwy 99 near Chowchilla Boulevard in Chowchilla where flooding has been reported.

   Use extra caution if in that area until road crews can reach the site.

Collision on Hwy 49 in Jackson

   February 28, 2015 at 3:30 PM:  A traffic collision at Electra Road and Hwy 49 in Jackson has resulted in minor injuries for one person.

   Several vehicles stopped to help and are parked alongside the roadway, which is blocked. Emergency personnel are en route to the scene.

Fire in Modesto affecting traffic

   February 28, 2015 at 3:15 PM:  A structure fire at Brink Ave and North Ave, just of Hwy 99 in Modesto is causing traffic hazards.

   Stanislaus County Fire is on scene, along with CHP. Use extra caution if headed in that direction.

Vehicle down bank at Tulloch

   February 28, 2015 at 12:30 PM:  A vehicle is reportedly over the side of Tulloch Dam Road near the bridge on the Tuolumne side.

   Emergency personnel are en route to the scene.

Two Hwy 49 collisions in 20 minutes

   February 28, 2015 at 12:05:  First a car went over the side at Hwy 49 and Road 601 near the Log Cabin.  One person suffered moderate injuries in this collision.

   20 minutes later a collision on Hwy 49 and Fraguero Road in Sonora required an ambulance for injuries when a white pickup crashed and was pinned in, blocking lanes.

Jailed Placer County man FREE -- For 5 hours!

   A Placer County man was re-arrested yesterday, only 5 hours after being released from the jail there.

   He was caught putting cans

Missouri town of Tyrone, population of 50

   It was learned late yesterday that the town of Tyrone, where a man shot and killed 7 and then himself.

   The man's mother was also found dead, but apparently of natural causes. The cause of the killings is still unknown.

Traffic Collision in Valley Springs

   February 28, 2015 at 10:45 AM:  CHP is at the scene of a traffic collision on Vista Del Lago in Valley Springs involving a silver Chevy Cruise.

   A tow truck has been dispatched. It isn't known if there are injuries. Use caution if in that area.

Horse and Donkey in Roadway

   February 28, 2015 at 9:35 AM:  A horse and a donkey are reportedly walking together on El Dorado Street in French Camp.

   CHP is en route to the area. Use caution if headed that way.  Big Brave Ollie is on his way to Coarsegold to chase a bull, so he can't help.

    UPDATE at 9:30 AM:  Two tow trucks have been dispatched to the scene.

Woman Arrested in Copperopolis

  On February 27, 2015 the Calaveras Sheriff's Office responded to a call about a woman going in and out of a store on Spangler in Copperopolis.

   They responded to the store and arrested

Warning: Coyotes on the Prowl

   We received two reports this morning of sightings of two coyotes traveling together hunting in the Hwy 4 area, between Red Apple and Avery.

   If you have chickens, you better keep them locked up. We hear these two look hungry.

Chains required on Hwy 4

  February 28, 2015:  Caltrans reports that chains are required on Hwy 4 just east of Arnold on vehicles without 4 wheel drive and snow tires.

   On Hwy 88 chains are required at Picketts Junction. On Hwy 108 chains are required east of Long Barn. Drive carefully.

Dog on Hwy 49

   UPDATE at 10:55 AM:  An officer has the dog now, but it refuses to get into the patrol car. Perhaps afraid of jail? They have now called animal control.

Arrest in Valley Springs

   On February 26, 2015 Calaveras Sheriff's deputies arrested Douglas Mark Peterson (64), of Valley Springs at his home on La Contenta Drive for alleged Felony Infliction of Corporal Injury on a Spouse.

   Peterson was booked into the Calaveras County Jail.

Spock, Leonard Nimoy dies

   The famous beloved Spock of Star Trek on TV, Leonard Nimoy, has died. He was 83.

   Word of his death came from his family in Los Angeles.

Murder-suicide in small Missouri town

   Authorities in the small Missouri town of Tyrone have reported that a man was found dead in his vehicle after 7 people were shot, and all but one has died who were neighbors.

   If you are aware of the dangerous "Neighbor from Hell" problems in Calaveras, you know how these crazy people can escalate to violence. It is scary!

Collision in Patterson

   February 27, 2015 at 9 AM: A traffic collision has been reported at Hwy 33 and Magnolia Avenue in Patterson.

   An ambulance and other emergency personnel are now at the scene. Use extra caution in that area.

Calaveras Visitors Bureau on Angels Camp City agenda

   The Angels Camp City Council will meet on Tuesday March 3, 2015 at 5 PM for two Closed Sessions and at 6 PM for the Regular Agenda.

   The Calaveras Visitors Bureau is on the agenda, how the monies are spent, etc.

Calaveras County hires new Public Works Director without contract or pay discussion?

   Calaveras County Supervisors just issued a press release that in a Closed Session they held on February 11, 2015 they hired a new Public Works Director.

   His name is Jeffrey Crovitz and he will begin the job on March 23, 2015. Although no discussion of compensation or contract was discussed at their meeting, Mr. Crovitz will be paid $148,740 annually, the current rate of pay for Public Works Director.

Italy's property being returned

   Books and other items, including a cannon and pottery from the 300's are being returned to Italy where they had been stolen.

   Taken from Italy's Historical Museum, the items were smuggled into the US and were recently located in San Francisco.

Calaveras Council of Governments meets March 2015

   The next meeting of the Calaveras Council of Governments (COG) will be held on March 4, 2015 at 6:30 PM in the Board of Supervisors Chambers in San Andreas.

   They have a full agenda, including approval of the draft Overall Work Program for 2015-16. 

Stanislaus National Forest to control burn

   According to the Stanislaus National Forest office they will begin a control underburn on Monday March 2, 2015 in the Mi Wuk area and near Hwy 108, where you may see smoke.

   This will be burned for 7 days, weather permitting.

Fence hit and run in Farmington

   February 26, 2015 at 10 AM: A fence was hit on Milton Road in Farmington and the vehicle left the scene, it was report to CHP.

     Apparently a license plate is known and CHP is investigating the incident. No injuries were reported.

Don't be a FOOL for GOLD!

      Apparently there is some Fools Gold in Gold Country!

    The Nevada District Attorney arrested a man who owns a Pawn Shop in Grass Valley is alleged to have sold someone $175,000 of counterfeit gold; bars of metal, layered in thin cheap gold. The purchaser discovered it when he went to sell them.

   So be careful, there is Fools Gold in them thar hills!

Denair man arrested in Glencoe

  On February 25, 2015 someone listed as "Other" arrested Shawn Austin Chambless (19) of Denair on Hwy 26 in Glencoe for allegedly Receiving stolen property valued over $900 and Vehicle Theft, both felonies.

   Chambless was booked into the Calaveras County Jail and release on bond.

Collision in Farmington

   February 26, 2015 at 8:15 AM:  CHP is at the scene of a traffic collision at Hwy 4 and Escalon Bellota Road in Farmington.

  No injures have been reported, but use caution if headed for that area.

Three vehicle collision--Cow killed

   February 26, 2015 at 6:45 AM:  Three vehicles collided after one hit and killed a cow that was out on Michigan Bar Road and Hwy 104 in Ione just after 6 AM.

   Emergency personnel are en route. Two vehicles are still blocking the roadway. Use extra caution if headed in that direction.

Jim Lantry found alive!

   According to the Calaveras Sheriff's Office,  Jim Lantry, who had been missing since yesterday afternoon when he went for a walk, was found alive in a deeply wooded area of Blue Lake Springs around 2 PM today.

   It isn't yet known if he has any medical problems, but he was out in the woods for a night and medical personnel are checking him out.

Black Bull loose in San Andreas

   February 25, 2015 at 5:30 PM:  A black bull has been reported in San Andreas at Church Hill Road and Sunset Street.

   Authorities are trying to locate the owner at this time. Use extra caution if in that area.

Car runs off Hwy 12

   February 25, 2015 at 2:35 PM:  A solo vehicle reportedly went off Hwy 12 at Central Hill between San Andreas and Valley Springs.

    There were no injuries reported but traffic is backed up. A tow truck is en route. Use extra caution if headed in that direction.

   During the public comments period of the Calaveras Supervisors meeting on February 24, 2015 several Lake Tulloch million dollar homeowners stood up and asked the Supervisors to stop the lowering of the lake for fish.

Jury only out two hours--GUILTY!

   The ex-Iraq Marine who tried to claim his PTSD was responsible for his killing of Chris Kyle and another veteran, was found guilty of murder last night.

   The jury went to dinner and then, after only two hours, came back with a guilty verdict, some saying they simply didn't believe he was so insane he didn't know what he was doing. 

   Why does the government allow PTSD veterans to handle or have weapons?  Good question!

Four Mountain Lions wandering

   The fantastic video that a woman in Georgetown, between the Placerville and Auburn areas, got of the four mountain lions, is amazing.

   Very seldom, according to Fish and Wildlife, do you see them in groups. They feel it must be a family unit; possibly a mother and her nearly grown cubs. You can see the video at KCRA 3.

Traffic Collision in Jamestown

   February 24, 2015 at 9:30 AM:  A traffic collision has been reported to CHP on Hwy 108 at Main Street in Jamestown between a black Dodge pickup and a Honda.

   There is debris in the westbound lanes as a result, but no injuries have been reported.

Goats loose near Hwy 49

   One of the calls CHP received on February 23, 2015 was for loose goats near Hwy 49 in Altaville, and animal services was notified.

   Goats are known escape artists and must have tight fencing or they will find a way out. One person told us they probably wanted to go shop at Angels Market.

Valley Springs man arrested

   On February 22, 2015 the Calaveras Sheriff's Office arrested Christopher Pierce Wooldridge (31) of Valley Springs on Hwy 12 in Double Springs for alleged Possession of a Controlled Substance for Sale and Transportation of a Controlled Substance, both felonies and for Controlled Substance Paraphernalia, a misdemeanor.

   Wooldridge was booked into the Calaveras County Jail and released on bond.

   February 21, 2015 at 11:50 AM:  A vehicle has been reported as running into a house on Coopers Court in Sonora.

Car overturned off Hwy 108

   February 21, 2015 at 11:25 AM:  A car has overturned into a field at Hwy 108 and Tulloch Road outside of Jamestown.

   A maroon sedan appears to be the only vehicle involved. An ambulance is en route to the scene. Injuries are reported as minor.

Two year old murder in Valley Springs

   Eight year old Leila Fowler was found dead in her Valley Springs home after being stabbed around 20 times. After a lengthy investigation, her older brother was arrested for the crime.

   Yesterday in Sacramento the 14 year old boy's attorney requested he be released, that there is new evidence that he may be innocent.

   The judge denied the request, saying he should remain in custody.

   February 21, 2015 at 11:20 AM:  A two vehicle collision has been reported at Hwy 99 and the Hwy 4 east connection in Stockton.

Motorcycles invade Calaveras County?

  If you were listening to the Calaveras Sheriff's scanner around 11 AM today, you heard several reports of about 50 motorcycles heading up Hwy 4 towards Angels Camp.

   We were told that one person watched for them and that they came through Angels Camp quietly and at the speed limit. These people bring money into the County. Why would law enforcement be harassing them?.

Two dogs on Stagecoach Road near Hwy 4

   February 21, 2015 at 11 AM:  Two dogs, one a large black poodle and the other a small black dog have been reported running on Stagecoach Road near Hwy 4 in Copperopolis.

Semi-truck fire blocks Hwy 99

   February 21, 2015 at 10:35 AM:  A semi truck that was reported on fire at around 11 PM February 20, 2014 has caused slowdowns on southbound Hwy 99 near Kansas off and on since that time.

   They are just now trying to create a break so they can tow the big rig away. The load had to be off-loaded onto another vehicle first.

General Plan meeting in Valley Springs

   On Monday, February 23, 2015, the Planning Director for the Calaveras General Plan Update will be holding an open house at the Valley Springs Elementary School.

   From 5 PM to 8 PM residents are welcome to come in a ask questions or make comments on the draft of the General Plan.  Supervisor Edson will be present also.

Collision on Hwy 99

   February 21, 2015 at 10:30 AM:  A dark green Avalanche and a grey Chevy pickup have been reported as colliding on southbound Hwy 99 near Crows Landing Road in Modesto.

   Emergency personnel are responding to the scene. Both vehicles are apparently in the center divide at this time. It isn't yet know if there are injuries.

   February 21, 2015 at 10:25 AM:  A traffic collision has been reported on Hwy 88 near Harney Lane in the Lodi area.

Two Burglaries reported in Valley Springs

   On February 20, 2015 a resident on Stagecoach Drive in Valley Springs reported a burglary to the Calaveras Sheriff.  Another Valley Springs resident on Baldwin resported a break-in and vandalism to the Sheriff's Office.

   The Sheriff took a report in both incidents. No other details are currently available.

Husband arrested after 40 years

   Nearly 40 years after Marvin Owens reported his wife Deborah missing in Butte County,  authorities have issued an arrest warrant for him where he is currently living, in Nebraska.

   No one in the family, including her now grown children ever heard anything and Butte County Sheriff's deputies allege that he killed her and disposed of the body.

Your animals eat baby chicks?

   Did you know that hundreds of millions of male baby chicks are considered worthless by breeders and are killed and turned into animal feed, possibly for your cats and dogs. And that's just here in the US.

   To the breeders, looking for egg layers, the males have no use and only a few are needed for the  hens to lay eggs.  Sad, but true!

   February 20, 2015 at 12:10 PM:  A collision that may have been head-on or a T-bone has caused major injuries on Hwy 88 in Pine Grove.

   February 20, 2015 at 9:10 AM:  CHP is at the scene of a vehicle collision at Tiffeni Drive and Michelle in Twain Harte where a car ran off the road and through a fence.

   An ambulance is responding and a tow truck dispatched to pull the vehicle 80 to 100' back onto the roadway.

Arrest for Child Cruelty in San Andreas

   On February 19, 2015 Calaveras Sheriff's deputies arrested Robert Melvin Young, III at Gold Strike Mobile Home Park in San Andreas for alleged Willful Cruelty to a Child and Evasion of Police, both felonies and Reckless Driving on a Highway and Driving without a License, both misdemeanors.

    Young was booked into the Calaveras County Jail.

Pedestrian hit on Hwy 108

   February 20, 2015 at 8:55 AM:  A juvenile pedestrian has been reportedly hit by a vehicle on Hwy 108 near Obyrnes Ferry Road in Jamestown.

   Emergency personnel, including CHP and an ambulance are en route to the scene.

  On February 19, 2015 Calaveras Sheriff's deputies arrested Shawn Calvin Hess (26) of Burson on Wendell Drive in Mountain Ranch for alleged First Degree Burglary, a felony and Possession of Controlled Substance, Controlled Substance Paraphernalia and being Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance, misdemeanors.

   Hess was booked into the Calaveras County Jail.

Garth Brooks adds 2 more shows in Sacramento

   After nearly 17 years of absence, Garth Brooks is returning to the Sacramento area. He will appear at Sleep Train Arena.

   Tickets are around $75 each and he has added 2 more shows, March 31 and April 1, 2015 to the venue, due to demand.

   As nearly everyone knows, last year, three Supervisors and then County Counsel, a known right-wing religious follower, passed a Resolution against all women's right to choose.

Roger Pitto lawsuit back on Calaveras agenda

   At the February 24, 2015 meeting of the Calaveras Supervisors, the first item on the agenda is a Closed Session agenda regarding the ongoing lawsuit of Roger Pitto vs the County of Calaveras.

  This lawsuits, the SierraSentinel.com believes, should go against the County. Bad Supervisors breed bad management, including County Counsel, and leads to lawsuits for the county, costing us money.

   

Patterson man bites Mom's ear off

   According to Patterson Police, on February 18, 2015 about 8:30 AM they were called to a home in Patterson when a woman had injuries to her ear.

   Her son, angry that his mother wanted him to move out, had apparently bitten her ear off.  She was taken to the hospital and her son later turned himself in to the Sheriff, where he was charged with alleged Mayhem.

Dog hit on Hwy 4 Crosstown

   February 19, 2015 at 9:50 AM:  Several cars are stopped on Hwy 4 the Crosstown Freeway in Stockton near Wilson Way, after a dog was hit and is in the #2 lane there.

   Traffic is blocked. CHP is en route to the area. Animal control has been advised.

Two collisions near UC Merced

   February 19, 2015 at 9:40 AM:  Two separated traffic collsions have been reported near UC Merced on North Lake Road at Bellevue in Merced.

   First, two Hondas collided; then a Neon crashed.  CHP is at the scene. No injuries have been reported, but traffic is affected in the area.

   February 19, 2015 at 9:15 AM:  A traffic collision has been reported at North Alpine Road and Eight Mile Road, not far from Hwy 88.

Collision on Mono Way in Sonora

   February 19, 2015 at 9 AM:  A traffic collision has been reported on Mono Way at Hwy 108 in Sonora.

   A grey Subaru Outback and a black BMW were involved in the collision. No injuries have been reported. Be cautious if in that area.

Traffic Hazards in Calaveras

  February 19, 2015 at 8:30 AM:  Two reports to CHP of traffic hazards in Calaveras County:

   One is on Hwy 12 at Double Springs Road, debris possibly left from a collision yesterday, and the other is on Hwy 4 at Pool Station Road with no details of what the hazard is.  CHP has been dispatched to both locations.

   The 87th Oscars are taking place on Sunday, February 22, 2015 and the host will be Neil Patrick Harris.

Car Fire--Stolen

    CHP is at the scene of a reported car fire at Morse Road and Kansas Ave. in Modesto that now seems to be a stolen car.

   The Stanislaus County Sheriff is investigating with the assistance of CHP.

   February 19, 2015 at 7:05 AM:  One witness said that a driver too the Farmington exit too fast and ended up crashing.

Boat Vandalized in Copperopolis

   A boat was reportedly vandalized on Obyrnes Ferry Road in Copperopolis on February 17, 2015.

   The Calaveras Sheriff's Office took a report of the incident.

Burglary in Murphys

   A burglary was reported to the Calaveras Sheriff by a resident on Wylderidge Drive in Murphys on February 17, 2015.

   The Sheriff took a report. No other details are known at this time.

Big Rig hits low tree, takes out fence

   February 18, 2015 at 12:10 PM:  A big rig reportedly hit a low tree branch, taking it and a bunch of fencing with it around the 15000 block of West Grant Line Road in the Tracy area.

   The roadway is covered in debris as a result. CHP is en route to the area.

Discount Passes to Calaveras County Fair

   If you enter something for exhibit in the Calaveras County Fair for 2015, you are eligible to purchase tickets to the Fair at a discount rate.

   Four day admission passes include parking and carnival admission for $25 for adults and $15 for those 18 and under. They will not, we are told, be sold online, so come to the office at the Fairgrounds 9 AM to 5 PM to purchase.

Major injuries and DUI Arrest in West Point

   According to CHP on February 17, 2015 around 7:50 PM Sean Michael Dunnam (23) of West Point was driving a 1995 Saturn on Hwy 26 at Stanley Road.

Fire reported in Copperopolis

   February 17, 2015 at 1 PM:  A fire was reported on Chuckwagon Drive in Copperopolis.

   Emergency units responded to a fire in a bedroom. It was contained to that area.

Prostitute steals police sergeants' gun, badge, handcuffs

   Apparently a Kensington police chief is being investigated after failing to discipline one of his sergeants, who slept in a Reno hotel room as a prostitute stole his gun, badge and handcuffs.

   The gun was recovered the next day, when the pimp shot himself in the leg in a pawn shop. Looks as though the chief could be looking for a new job as a result. 

   Stuff happens in small towns, rural counties!! Kensignton is a small town in the Berkeley Hills.

Fire reported at Arnold Rabo Bank--False Alarm?

   February 17, 2015 at 2 PM:  A fire was just reported at the Rabo Bank in Arnold. Possibly in the attic area of the bank building.

   Emergency fire personnel responded.  The first response was that nothing was showing outside the bank building.

Fifty Shades on Hwy 50

   Even the national news covered the fact that drivers on Hwy 50 in Sacramento were having a hard time concentrating on their driving as the movie "Fifty Shades of Grey" flashed bigger than life on the drive-in movie screen.

   Now that's funny!! Hope no one crashes!

60's pop-singer Leslie Gore dies

   Popular songs like "It's My Party", "Judy's Turn to Cry" and "You Don't Own Me" were the songs she was famous for in the 60's, and they made Leslie Gore a pop icon at the time.

   Gore died yesterday after a battle with lung cancer. She was 68.

Prime Minister Netanyahu is a big spender?

   Apparently Israel's Prime Minister Netanyahu can't control his personal spending habits. In an audit it was revealed that the PM spends over $2000 a month just cleaning his second home, which is more than the average Israeli earns in a month.

   It also revealed that since he took over the job, that the food and entertainment amount has more than doubled, totaling $130,000 in 2013. Looks like with his re-election looming, his trip to visit John Boehner is the least of his problems.

Geese and turkeys in roadway

   February 17, 2015 at 10 AM:  A CHP unit was requested after they received a report of geese and turkeys in the roadway at Curran Road and Village Drive in Ione.

   The caller indicated the neighbor lets them out to run and they head for the road.  It was referred to Amador County Animal Control as an ongoing issue.

Carnival Float causes 20 deaths

   Someone on a crowded carnival float in downtown Port au Prince, Haiti, used a pole to lift a power line up, away from the float.

   As a result 7 people were immediately electrocuted and 13 others  followed quickly. 46 others were injured in the ensuing fire and panic.

General Plan meeting in Arnold--Don't forget!!

  On Tuesday, February 17, 2015 the Planning Director and new District 3 Supervisor will be present for a meeting of the Arnold community to review the most recent edition of the Calaveras County General Plan Update, which has been ongoing for nearly 12 years.

   It continues to cost the County taxpayers money as it goes forward. (so far $1.5 million) The time of the meeting is 5 PM to 8 AM at the Ebbetts Pass Fire Station on Blagen Road.

Car hits pole on Hwy 49

   February 16, 2015 at 1:35 PM:  A car hit and bent a pole on Hwy 49 at Junction Drive, near the Grocery Outlet in Oakhurst.

   February 16, 2015 at 1:30 PM:  A three vehicle traffic collision was reported at Hwy 12 and North Bush Street in Lockeford between a white Toyota Camry,a grey Toyota Highlander and a black Mazda.

Car misses turn, goes through fence

   February 16, 2015 at 12:40 PM:  A vehicle reportedly missed a turn and went through a fence on Hwy 132 and Crabtree Road in Waterford.

   February 16, 2015 at 12:10 PM:  An injured deer has been reported on Hwy 88 at Silver Drive in Pioneer.

Overturned car near Hilmar

  UPDATE at 11:30 AM:  We just learned that a pole is snapped at the base has fallen across both lanes of River Road and that lines are arcing.

PIckup hits Fire Hydrant and leaves

   February 16, 2015 at 10:45 AM:  An older gray pickup has reportedly hit a fire hydrant at Back Street and Powder House Street in Groveland and left the area.

    Unfortunately for him, the reporting party got photos of the vehicle before it left the scene. CHP has been notified.

Squaw Valley World Cup skiing cancelled

   Due to the continuing drought conditions, Squaw Valley has determined they do not have enough snow to hold the World Cup Skicross and Snowboardcross events in March. so they are forced to cancel the event.

   They usually record around 450 inches at the top. This year they only have had 140 inches at 8200', not near enough for the races.  The event would have drawn top skiers from around the world.

Owner of Ferrero Chocolate empire dies

   Michelle Ferrero, 89 year old owner of Ferrero Candy empire, died on Valentines Day after a lengthy illness.

   The company owns Rochet Pralines and Tic Tacs, among many others, and sells in 53 countries. He was the richest man in Italy with a worth of about 23 billion dollars.

Traffic fatality in Livingston--Hwy 99 blocked

   UPDATE at 12:25 PM:  We just learned that the victims were driving a Nissan Xterra and it received major rollover damage. It still isn't clear what the other vehicle was.

LAFCo meets February 23, 2015

   Calaveras Local Area Formation Commission will meet on Monday February 23, 2015 in San Andreas at the Calaveras Supervisors Chambers.

   The meeting will be called to order at 6 PM. On the agenda is electing a Chair and Vice-Chair for 2015, Conflict of Interest statements and the Calaveras County General Plan Update.

Hit and Run in Stockton

   February 15, 2015 at 1 PM:  A hit and run has been reported on Foppiano Lane near Hammer Lane in Stockton.

   Although rumors have been flying, Katie Couric insists she is not looking to get Brian Williams job on the NBC Nightly News.

   Who knows what NBC plans while Lester Holt sits in temporarily.

Mustang vs deer on Hwy 49

   February 15, 2015 at 11:30 AM:  A Mustang collided with a deer on Hwy 49 and Reynolds Ferry Road at New Melones.

   The deer is blocking the highway. The driver was not injured. A tow truck will be called by the Mustang owner.

'Fifty Shades of Grey" wins box office

   For Valentine's weekend, "Fifty Shades of Grey" took box office honors, reportedly taking in $81,7 million for the first three days.

  It could take in over $90 million for the four day holiday after tomorrow.

Traffic Collision on Hwy 99 in Acampo

   February 14, 2015 at 11:15 AM:  A traffic collision was reported between a grey Dodge and a dark colored pickup on Hwy 99 North at Jahant Road in Acampo.

   They refused an ambulance for injuries. A tow truck was dispatched. CHP is at the scene.

Union Public Utility District Financing Corporation Annual meeting

   In Murphys on Wednesday, February 18, 2015 the Union Public Utility District Financing Corporation will hold its Annual Meeting at 7 PM at 339 Main Street in Murphys.

  The only agendized item is to elect officers for 2015. Then they move to the regular UPUD meeting at 7:05 PM, where a review of the letter to LAFCo regarding their sphere of influence in agendized, along with a review of the water conservation ordinance.

Motorcycle rider receives major injuries

 February 14, 2015 at 11 AM: Four CHP are at the scene of a  vehicle and motorcycle crash on I-5 in Thornton near Walnut Grove Road.

  The rider incurred major injuries and is down in the roadway.  A tow truck has been dispatched for the motorcycle.

   According to Modesto Police, on Friday, February 13, 2015 at about 8:30 PM a 2014 Buick Regal was traveling westbound on Yosemite Avenue (Hwy 132 West)

Angels Branch of Sierra Railway

   Such a shame that all the railroad tracks have been destroyed in Calaveras County. What a wonderful tourist draw it would have been.

Car vs Motorcycle in Acampo

   February 13, 2015 at 4:15 PM:  A vehicle and a motorcycle collided at Acampo Road and Bruella Road between Lockeford and Acampo.

  It was reported that someone pickup up the injured person from the motorcycle and is trying to get them to a hospital. Emergency personnel are responding.

Mercedez vs Peterbilt truck on Hwy 99

   February 13, 2015 at 1:05 PM:  A white Mercedez was reported colliding with a Peterbilt big rig on northbound Hwy 99 at the French Camp Road onramp in Stockton.

   An ambulance and other emergency personnel are responding to the scene. Use extra caution if headed for that area.

Low wires in Valley Springs

  February 13, 2015 at 1 PM:  CalFire is en route to Warren Road near Renee Drive in Valley Springs where some low hanging wires are reportedly across the roadway.

   Avoid the area if possible until cleared. PG&E was advised.

Traffic Collision on Hwy 108

   February 13, 2015 at 11:15 AM:  A traffic collision was reported on Hwy 108 at Bangs Ave. in Modesto involving two vehicles.

   No injuries were reported. Tow trucks are responding to the scene. Be cautious if in that area.

CCWD meeting

   On February 18, 2015 at 9 AM CCWD (Calaveras County Water District) will hold a regular meeting at their offices on Toma in San Andreas.

   On the agenda is completion of the Fly-In Acres water project, Calaveras County's General Plan Update, Director re-imbursement for travel and expenses, along with approval of a continuing contract with Lobbyist company Carmen.

Children locked in car

   At around 9:50 AM on February 13, 2015 the Murphys Fire Department was dispatched to the US Post Office in Murphys, where some children were locked inside a car.

   The Fire Department responded immediately to the scene. 

Burglary reported in West Point

  On February 12, 2015 at burglary was reported on Barney Way in West Point. The Calaveras Sheriff took a report.

   Someone had forced their way into the residence. It isn't clear what was taken.

Sea Lion pup rescued

   Two good Samaritans and a park ranger who happened by were able to rescue  an underweight sea lion pup that was laying along the highway in the Bay Area.

   Neither the good Samaritans, nor the ranger have been named, but the pups name is now Percevero. He will be treated at the Golden Gate rescue center and released when he gains weight.

Give us our Land back!

   A family who donated land to the Tracy School District in 1971, had a clause put in, that if the District no longer used the land for a school, that it must be returned to them. Mr. Yamada bought the land after being released from a Japanese internment camp in 1946.

   In 2009 the school was closed and at that time the Yamada family was told the land would be returned.  When the district heard that the Yamada's were considering leasing it to a charter school, they stopped the process. Now there may be a lawsuit.

Lester Holt takes over Nightly News

  Immediately after the suspension of Brian Williams from NBC's Nightly News, his name was also removed from the title.

   His replacement, Lester Holt, is from the Sacramento area, where he went to high school and he was even an intern at KCRA 3, where he was highly thought of.

Pilot Whales beached in New Zealand

   Hundreds of rescuers are hurrying to a beach in New Zealand where nearly 200 pilot whales have beached themselves.

  It will be a rush to try and save them before they die. It isn't known what caused them to beach.
