Calaveras Board of Supervisors: Appointment of new Sheriff

   On November 3, 2015 the Calaveras Supervisors will hold their regular weekly meeting at 9 AM.

   The County Counsel is expected to give direction to the Supervisors on the appointment of a new Sheriff to take the place of Gary Kuntz, who passed away last week.

Collision in Ripon

   October 31, 2015 at 7:10 AM:  A collision has been reported between a black Honda and a black Chevy Tahoe at Hwy 99 northbound at Main in Ripon.

   A woman is crying hysterically according to one witness. CHP is en route. At least one lane is blocked. It isn't yet known if there are injuries. Use extra caution in that area.

Big rig and pickup with horse trailer collide

  October 30, 2015 at 2:55 PM:  A big rig is jackknifed on northbound Hwy 99 at Lathrop Road in Lathrop and a pickup pulling a horse trailer is damaged.

   Four vehicles were reportedly involved in this collision. An ambulance and three tow trucks are en route to the scene. Use extra caution if in the area.

Actress Maureen O'Hara dies

   Maureen O'Hara, remembered for her many wonderful roles on the big screen, and especially opposite John Wayne in "The Quiet Man" among many others, has died. She was 95.

   The Irish redhead was popular for her spunk and played that role well. She reportedly died in her sleep last night at her home in Idaho.

Turkey in a Barrel in Mokelumne Hill

   On Saturday November 21, 2015 the Mokelumne Hill Community Historical Trust will hold a Turkey in a Barrel dinner.

    It will be held in the Town Hall and starts at 6 PM with a social hour. Tickets are available at the Library and cost $20 for adults, $12 for 5-12 years, $7 under 5, and over 80 is free.

Trudy Lackey new Exec of Mind Matters

    We received a press release that Trudy Lackey, who has served on the Mind Matters Board in Murphys since 2009, has been appointed to be interim Executive Director.

  She replaces Wayne Brown, who left suddenly due to family problems.

Several animal hazards this morning

  October 30, 2015:  We have seen reports of an injured deer at Hwy 49 and Hwy 26 in San Andreas, a Golden Retriever on Hwy 12 in the Burson area and an unknown animal in Copperopolis at Stagecoach Road and Surrey Lane.

   Be extra cautious driving in those areas.

Walgreens buying Rite Aid

   Looks like one of our local drug store chains will be changing its name again. Yesterday it was announced that Walgreens is buying out Rite Aid.

  What was once Thrifty Drugs and the other Long's Drugs have already been through this change at least once to Rite Aid and CVS.

William Tod Scott of Mountain Ranch

   William Tod Scott passed away on Tuesday October 13, 2015 at Mark Twain Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. He was 86.

Blue Lake Springs and CCWD make agreement

   Ever since this drought began, Blue Lake Springs Water District has had problems serving water to its over 2000 residential connections in Arnold.  Despite attempts to drill new wells, this year residents were not allowed to water outdoors at all, due to a lack of water.

   According to CCWD, the two water districts have come to an agreement to provide a supplemental water supply to the subdivision.  This is after many months of
negotiation.

    Bruce Jerry Douglas passed away at his home in Dorrington on October 21, 2015, surrounded by family and friends.

   The Audubon Society says it can be made into a real feast for the local birds. Just cut it in half, as shown; make sure the seeds are scooped out (too big for most birds); insert sticks or small branches into the pumpkin to create perches; knot two ends of light rope or twine together and tack to the bottom of your pumpkin; hang it over a strong branch and enjoy the birds.

Car goes through fence in Linden

   October 29, 2015 at 9:30 AM:  A tow truck is en route to the scene of a Silver Subaru that went off Escalon Bellota Road at Hwy 26 near Linden.

Supervisor Oliveira now adds to Council of Government corruption

       Its hard to believe that we can get three new Supervisors in Calaveras County and that all three; Kearney, Edson and Oliveira can be so corrupt in less than one year, the TEA POTTY three.

   The US Department of the Interior wants to remind us that though this may be Halloween week and while you might tend to think bats are bad, they tell us bats are very important as both pollinators and a pest control.

Logging truck loses log on Hwy 4

   October 28, 2015 at 10:45 AM:  It may be a miracle, but a logging truck lost a log that hit a white Subaru Forester on Hwy 4 near Monge Ranch Road in Douglas Flat, and there doesn't appear to be any injuries.

   The car, however, is not driveable. CHP is en route to the scene. Use extra caution if in the area.

Illegal Gunfire reported in Calaveras

 October 27, 2015:   Illegal gunfire was reported in Murphys on Hwy 4 at 2:15 AM, in Glencoe on Independence Road at 3:44 AM, and on Winton Road in West Point at 4:29 PM.

   No report was taken of these incidents.

San Andreas man arrested for alleged AMMO

   On October 27, 2015 the Calaveras Sheriff's Office arrested Michael Everett Rutt (41) of San Andreas, at his residence on Marshall Street in San Andreas.

   Rutt was booked into the Calaveras County Jail for allegedly having Illegal Ammunition and Revocation of Command Supervision, both felonies.

Angels Camp Police arrest Sex Offender

   According to the Angels Camp Police, they arrested John Allen Logg (43) (an unknown address) of Mountain Ranch on October 27, 2015 around 2:15 PM on South Main Street in Angels Camp.

   Logg was booked into the Calaveras County Jail for allegedly for two counts of Failing to Register as a Sex Offender and Violation of Parole, both felonies and for an outstanding warrant for allegedly being Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance, a misdemeanor.

Red Porsche spins out

   October 28, 2015 at 9:15 AM:  CHP has now cleared Hwy 49 after a red Porsche spun out and off the roadway near Glory Hole, outside Angels Camp.

   No injuries have been reported. Be careful! The roads are slippery.

Sonora Pass Closed

   October 28, 2015 at 9:35 AM:  Caltrans has just announced that Hwy 108 (Sonora Pass) is now closed at Kennedy Meadows due to the storm.

   There is no time indicated as to when it will be able to reopen.

Poor FOX Sports!

  The most embarrassing thing that can happen to any network is to be taken off the air during an important live event. FOX executives were NOT laughing during the first game of the World Series, and had the game stopped for TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES.

   The Royals beat the Mets after 14 innings last night, after being interrupted by a power outage early in the game.  FOX was overwhelmed and did not handle the disruption well, finally cutting over to an international feed.  It was also the longest World Series game in history.

Butte Fire area warning by Sheriff

   The Calaveras Sheriff's Office has issued a warning in the Butte Fire area for October 28, 2015 due to the rain.  While rain is welcome, they caution residents and drivers.

   Increased chances of debris flow, mud slides and flooding could cause road closures in the fire area.  Drive carefully and watch for any signs of flooding.

Traffic collision near Don Pedro

     October 27, 2015 at 2:30 PM:  A traffic collision resulted in a disturbance at Granite Springs Road and Piney Creek Road near Don Pedro.

  No injuries were reported from the collision. CHP is en route to the scene. Use caution if in that area.

Cow dies on Hwy 50

   October 27, 2015:  A cow that wandered onto Hwy 50 eastbound this morning was hit multiple times by vehicles and died at the scene near Folsom.

   Traffic was backed up in the area for a couple of hours.  It is now reopened. No people were injured.

Car runs off Milton Road

   October 27, 2015 at 12:20 PM:  CHP is at the scene of a vehicle that ran off Milton Road near Hwy 4 below Copperopolis.

   It will be necessary to tow it around 150' back to the roadway. No injuries were reported, but be careful if in the area.

CHP says "Don't drive drunk!'

   CHP reminds everyone who plans to go out and celebrate on Halloween that you need to designate a sober driver ahead of time.

Carrots everywhere in Livingston

   October 27, 2015 at 11 AM:  Caltrans is just now getting a handle on a mess created at Hwy 99 at Bloss in Livingston where a semi collided with a little truck and overturned.

   Lanes have been blocked for over an hour with spilled carrots and one person had to be transported to the hospital for injuries.

USFS plans to burn understory in Calaveras

   The USFS plans to burn the understory (oaks, dogwoods, manzanita, mountain misery, (so the wildlife will starve, in our opinion, etc) around 6 miles from Bear Valley in the Calaveras Ranger District.

   This is the North Fork of the Mokelumne river in Bellfour Canyon off Forest Road 7N09. It is scheduled to begin October 28, 2015 and continue for several days.

Semi and two small cars collide in Patterson

   October 27, 2015 at 6:50 AM:  CHP is attempting to clear the roadway at Hwy 33 and Frank Cox Road in Patterson where a semi and two small cars collided.

   The semi's load was spilled across the roadway, but there were no injuries reported. Use caution if in that area.

Two semis and a small car collide on Hwy 120

   October 26, 2015 at 3 PM:  Traffic is backed up to I-5 due to a traffic collision involving two semis and a small car at Hwy 120 eastbound and Hwy 99 in Manteca.

   Even the two truck is having trouble reaching the collision. An ambulance is also en route to the scene. Avoid the area if possible until cleared.

University of Mississippi ('Ol Miss) removes confederate flag

   After a vote of the student council, the University of Mississippi is removing the flag with the Confederate symbol from their flagpole.

   This is just one more step in what is slowly becoming a realization that racism is infectious, like a disease, and must be wiped out across the country.

Motorcycle crash in Bridgeport

   October 26, 2015 at 1 PM:  A motorcycle has reportedly crashed at Old Hiway and Totokon Road in the Bridgeport area.

   An ambulance and other emergency personnel are en route. Avoid the area if possible until an ambulance has cleared the injured.

Calaveras Supervisor Oliveira says racists rule D3?

   In what has been a third hand report, the Sentinel has been told that Calaveras District 3 Supervisor Oliveira says "Racists rule" in his district. Some things
we can't even print here.

   In fact, we have it on good anonymous authority that "Racists who threaten the President" are Oliveiras' favorites to rule everything that happens to residents in Ebbetts Pass. Whoa!!!

  In fact several people in D3 have told us that one "special racist" has been contacting respectable people on behalf of Oliveira. Shocked yet?

Child stuck in swing in Atwater

   October 26, 2015 at 10:30 AM:  A child has been reported stuck in a swing at a park at Bridgewater and Juniper in Atwater.

   Emergency crews are en route to the scene at Joan Faull Park.

Fire department called to Rock Creek Landfill

   October 26, 2015 at 10:10 AM:  The fire department has been dispatched to the Rock Creek Landfill in Milton for a rescue due to a HAZMAT problem.

   They have been told to meet the Calaveras Sheriff at the entrance first. No other details have been provided. We believe this is where the "poison" ash from the Butte Fire is being hauled.

Thunderbird blocking Parrotts Ferry Road

   October 26, 2015 at 10 AM:  A Ford Thunderbird has been reported blocking Parrotts Ferry Road at Sawmill Flat Road in Columbia.

   The car apparently broke down. A tow truck is en route but traffic is back up so be cautious in that area.

   If they finish their prayers at the Tuesday October 27, 2015 Board meeting, the Calaveras Supervisors will hold a Closed Session to work out how to give themselves yet another raise in pay.

   Although we do understand why they love their jobs (little work for much pay), we can't find one person who truly believes these five deserve a raise in pay, or even deserve what they get now.

   A tan colored cat was spotted dead on Hwy 4 in the Avery area on October 25, 2015.

   If you are missing your cat, please go check to see if that pretty one was yours. If you send your cat out at night, it will likely be killed on the Hwy.

Motorcycle crash outside Lathrop

   October 25, 2015 at 3:45 PM:   A motorcycle crash has been reported at Howard Road and Undine Road outside Lathrop.

   Two CHP are at the scene. An ambulance is en route.

Fiery collision in Oakdale

    October 25, 2015 at 12 Noon:  A traffic collision was reported at Patterson Road and Crane Road in the Oakdale area.

   The vehicle was on fire and one person was trapped inside. Emergency crews, along with several CHP are at the scene. Avoid the area if possible.

Five killed on road to Yosemite

   A head-on crash around 6:30 PM on October 24, 2015 caused a fire and the death of 5 people on Hwy 120 near Groveland, the road to Yosemite.

    Hwy 120 was closed for most of the night as emergency crews handled the crash. Two people who survived were flown to hospitals for treatment of their injuries.

Raiders play in San Diego--Niners off

   The Oakland Raiders (2-3) are in San Diego today to play the Chargers (2-4). The game starts at 1:05 PM and will be carried on CBS.

   The Niners are off til Sunday,  November 1 when they play the Rams in St. Louis.

Car runs off road in West Point

   October 24, 2015 at 11:40 AM:  CHP is at the scene of a silver Civic that ran off Hwy 26 at Associated Office Road in West Point.

   It is not blocking the roadway and no injuries are indicated.

Traffic collision on Hwy 12

   October 24, 2015 at 11:30 AM:  A traffic collision has been reported on Hwy 12 at Lower Double Springs Road in Double Springs.

   A tow truck and other emergency crews are en route to the scene, so use extra caution in the area. No injuries have been indicated.

Heading to Apple Hill

   If you are planning a trip to Apple Hill this fall, you might keep in mind that El Dorado County health officials have reported 7 cases of e-coli from unpasteurized apple juice from a farm in that area.

  Apparently the farm has recalled its juice voluntarily and will stop offering free juice to visitors of the area.

How many have been given trailers now?

  We sent an email to each Calaveras Supervisors, asking how many of the families burned out by the Butte Fire now have trailers on their own land.

   We don't feel its right to prevent them from going back to their own land due to what they are called dangerous circumstances.  We have also been told that using buckets for human waste and trying to live in a car is much more dangerous to your health than breathing in the so-called poison ash.

Missing person from Dorrington

    27 year old Richard Treff has been reported missing in the Dorrington area by the Calaveras County Sheriff.

   He left on foot from his house on Yuroc around 5 PM on October 21, 2015. He has not been seen since. Helicopters and ground search and rescue have scoured the area without success.

   He is 6'2" tall and weighs around 170 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. If you seen him contact the Sheriff at 754-6500.

Traffic collision in Standard

   October 23, 2015 at 1 PM:  A traffic collision has been reported at Mono Way and Standard Road in the Standard area.

   Two are pinned in and fuel is leaking. Emergency crews are responding to the scene.

Injured deer on Parrotts Ferry Road in Columbia

   October 23, 2015 at 11:50 AM:  An injured deer has been reported on Parrotts Ferry Road and Covered Wagon Road in Columbia.

   A discussion of what to do with the deer often takes place, but they always shoot them because they cannot apparently allow a deer's leg to be repaired.

Three killed at pot grow identified

   The names of the three men killed at the Railroad Flat pot grow have been released:

   Robert Haney (60) of Modesto, Terry Glen, Jr. (44) of Waterford and Wes Smiith (55) of Snelling all died of shotgun wounds.  An investigation is ongoing by the Calaveras Sheriff's department.

Car crash on bridge in Copperopolis

   October 23, 2015 at 10 AM:  A traffic collision has been reported on Obyrnes Ferry Road (on the bridge) at Lake Tulloch in Copperopolis.

   One vehicle is blocking a lane. It isn't yet known if there are any injuries. Avoid the area if possible.

Big rig stuck on railroad tracks

   October 23, 2015 at 9:50 AM: CHP is at the scene of a big rig hauler who's "landing gear" is stuck on the railroad tracks at Reeve Road and Byron Road in Tracy.

   UPRR has been notified and a big rig tow is en route to the scene. Use extra caution if in that area.

Traffic collision near Melones

   October 23, 2015 at 9:40 AM:  A traffic collision has been reported on Jackass Hill Road at Hwy 49 on the Tuolumne County side of Melones.

    No injuries were indicated, but a tow truck was required. Be extra cautious in the area.

Several reports of gunfire or fireworks in Valley Springs

   On October 22, 2015 the Calaveras Sheriff's Office received several reports of gunfire or fireworks from residents in the area.

   Complaints were received from Hogan Dam Road, on Grouse Drive, on Golden West Court, on Gallius Lane, on Augusta Court, on St. Andrews Drive between 10 PM and 10:10 PM. No report was taken on any of these reports.

Assault with Firearm in Mountain Ranch

   According to the Calaveras Sheriff's Office, on October 22, 2015, after receiving a call that he was shooting at some type of crew, they arrested Garrett Michael Allen (22) of Mountain Ranch at his residence on Worden Drive.

   Allen was booked into the Calaveras County Jail for allegedly Assault with a Firearm, a felony, and then released on bond. Was it a PG&E crew or water, hmmmm?

   October 21, 2015 at 1:25 PM:  A four car crash has been reported on Douglas Road and Pershing Ave, not far from Weberstown Mall in Stockton.

Complaints about petition gathering in Valley Springs

   The Calaveras Sheriff's Office received multiple complaints about someone aggressively attempting to gather petition signatures on both Hwy 26 and Hwy 12.

   Reports were that customers were being bothered by the gatherers.

Two dead dogs in Rancho Calaveras

   October 21, 2015 at 12:30 PM: Two dead dogs have been reported on Baldwin Street at Usher Drive in Rancho Calaveras.

200 earthquakes in about a week?

   Small earthquakes have been hitting around the San Ramon area for around a week now. Most are under 3.0.

   Some are concerned that a big quake may be on the horizon. Scientist differ in their opinions of this possibility, but small quakes are common in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Gun found in burned car at Hogan Dam

   October 21, 2015 at 6 AM:  A middle of the night car fire on New Hogan Parkway near Cosgrove Creek in Valley Springs was extinguished by Cal Fire, but the incident has now been reopened.

   Apparently a gun has been found in the vehicle and CHP is returning to the scene to investigate.

   October 20, 2015 at 2:30 PM:  CHP and fire personnel are responding to a report of power lines down on Hatvickson Lane in Rancho Calaveras.

Lake Tahoe policeman killed in crash

  An 8 year veteran of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, his wife and a family friend were killed in this collision on Hwy 50 near Fallon, Nevada.

   His four children survived the crash.

Valley Springs woman arrested

   According to the Calaveras Sheriff's Office on October 19, 2015 they arrested Jealeana Lee Lebugle (50) of Valley Springs at her residence on Macatee in Valley Springs.

   Lebugle was booked into the Calaveras County Jail for allegedly Threatening a Crime with the Intent to Terrorize and Assault with a Firearm on a Person, both felonies and for Exhibiting a Firearm, a misdemeanor.

   According to CHP on October 17, 2015 around 11:55 PM Austin Williford (16) of Murphys was driving a 2007 Mini eastbound on Hwy 4 east of Vallecito Bypass Road at a high rate of speed with two passengers.

Traffic collision on Hwy 99

   October 19, 2015 at 12:25 PM:  A traffic collision has been reported at Hwy 99 and Main Street in Manteca involving a Ford pickup and a silver Cadillac.

    A CHP unit is at the scene and is trying to clear the roadway.

Bocce courts now in Murphys Park

   After much planning and hurdle jumping, the Murphys Community Club finally has the Bocce Courts up and running at the Park.

   The Angels Murphys Rotary Club, the Murphys Business Association and the Native Daughters all donated to make the courts possible. Enjoy them when you get a chance.

Alleged Female Felon with firearm arrested

   Per Angels Camp Police, on October 17, 2015 around 6 PM they arrested Denise Elaine Aanonson (51), address unknown, at Main and Monte Verde Street in Angels Camp.

   Annonson was booked into the Calaveras County Jail for alleged Possession of a Firearm by a Felon or an Addict, a felony.

Traffic collision in Oakdale

 On October 19, 2015 at 8:35 AM a traffic collision was been reported at Hwy 120 and Valley Home Drive in Oakdale.

 A Jeep and a Chevy pickup are involved. An ambulance and two tow trucks responded to the scene.  The roadway is now clear.

  Mic Harper, Calaveras Community Band Director, is announcing a benefit concert to benefit the Mokelumne Hill Volunteer Fire Department due to the tragedy of the Butte Fire.

  It will be held on Sunday November 1, 2015 at 3 PM. There is no admission charge, but donations will be eagerly accepted.

 What a relief it was when the 49ers were able to pull out a win against the Ravens 25-20.

Last guided sunset hike on Rim Trail for 2015

   The Arnold Rim Trail will have the last 2015 scheduled guided sunset hike to Cougar Rock on Sunday, October 25, 2015.
