Man arrested for stabbing and BBQing pet

This creep looks vaguely familiar. Or do all animal

   In Elk Grove earlier this evening, police were called to a home where Eric Pauly, 35 was BBQing a pet turtle after having stabbed it.

   Pauly, of Citrus Heights, was arrested for animal cruelty and violation of parole.

Senator John McCain has brain tumor

   In a press release by his office today, it was made public that John McCain has been diagnosed with brain cancer.

   This would explain the day his mind got lost during a hearing on the hill.  It isn't clear what treatments may be used or when he will return to work.

Drifting smoke in Calaveras County

  Although our Calaveras Health Department has not issued any warning, the drifting smoke from the Detwiler Fire in Mariposa County is affecting people here.

   We recommend that if you have respiratory issues, that you avoid breathing the smoky air. We have also been made aware of the smoke affecting peoples eyes today.

Paloma Fire totals 13 acres

   Per CalFire, the Paloma Fire on Hwy 26 at Paloma burned 13 acres before being extinguished around 6:30 PM on July 18, 2017.

   Many were concerned about the area around the Snyder Ranch, very near to this fire. No structures were lost in the fire.  The cause is under investigation.

Town of Mariposa being evacuated as fire approaches

   Residents in Calaveras County can understand and sympathize with those in Mariposa as they are being evacuated. Yes, the entire town.

   They lost utilities, communication and all regular services as the Governor declared them under a State of Emergency.

Much HATED fire fees going away!! Thank you legislature!!

   There hasn't been much in California more detested (well, maybe clear-cutting), than the absurd and wasted Fire FEE.

   Put in place by the appointed Fire Board, made up mostly of SPI officials, the money (billions) it raised never ONCE went to stop fires!!   It will go away when Governor Brown signs the new Climate Change bill!!  HOORAY!!!

McCormick Seasonings buys British company

     McCormick and Company has reported it will buy the food business of British consumer goods conglomerate Reckitt Benckiser Group for $ 4.2 billion.

  It will integrate RB Foods into its business and retain the brand names of French's and Cattlemans.


Mariposa County Fire update

   As of 8 AM on July 19, 2017 the Detwiler Fire in Mariposa County is 45,724 acres and is only 7% contained.

  5000 people are now being evacuated as the fire comes near to Mariposa and even Coulterville. The governor has declared a state of emergency.

Leland Fischer of Mokelumne Hill

Red Cross sets up new shelters for Detwiler evacuees

   Shelters for evacuees of the Detwiler Fire have had to be moved to Oakhurst, Planada and Groveland due to the extensive growth of this fire in the past 2 days.

   The Red Cross recommends that everyone have an evacuation kit and plan for any emergency that may arise, but especially for fire.


50 acre fire in Knights Ferry stopped

   Although it is not recorded on the CalFire website log, we understand that the fire on Hwy 108 near Willms Road in Knights Ferry has been stopped as of late July 18, 2017.

   It reached 50 acres. We do not know if any structures were affected.

Detwiler Fire in Mariposa County

   UPDATE at 8:30 PM:  CalFire has reported that the total acreage is now 25,000 and still only 5% containment.  8 structures now destroyed and others damaged. This fire is headed for

Fatal head-on collision in Pine Grove

   July 18, 2017 at 6 PM:  CHP is still at the scene of a fatal head-on collision on Hwy 88 at Aqueduct Grove Road in Pine Grove.

    All lanes have been blocked as CHP investigates and tow trucks remove the vehicles.
