Planning Commission Denies "Sawmill"

After what we would have to call a "salty", if not nasty debate in front of the Calaveras County Planning Commission, Castle and Cooke's Dave Haley walked out an unhappy man
with a denial vote by the Planning Commissioners.

Many tidbits of information came out during the debate; how C&C's giant septic tank that has to be emptied into a truck and hauled to the sewage pond or a myriad of other complaints about C&C.

Copperopolis residents should know that a C&C employee made a statement during the hearing, that before C&C arrived, Copperopolis was nothing but a crime and drug infested town; that C&C has made Copperopolis a wonderful place to live.

This is not going to help the divide between the old town residents and the Saddle Creek and other C&C developments owners.

When it came time to make a motion Mike Miller, who is Tom Tryon's appointee moved to pass the project on to the Board of Supervisor without any recommendation.  That motion got NO second.

Then Greg Gustafson, Spellman's appointee for District 5 made a motion to deny "Sawmill's" approval.  McLaughlin, Wilensky's appointee, seconded the motion.

The final vote to deny the project was Gustafson, McLaughlin and Plotnik, Callaway's appointee,  against Allured, Tofanelli's appointee and Miller.  3-2 to deny "Sawmill"

And this is after what we heard was a week of  "wining and dining" (well, maybe not wining,) the Planning Commissioners by Mr. Haley.

Haley had made an announcement during the hearings a couple of months ago, that if this project was denied that he may moved to "was it Oakley"?  Has a moving truck been spotted?

Developers need to remember that there are no gurantees for zoning amendments. They need to remember that Copperopolis is already struggling with inadequate facilities, fines from the state and that that projects inconsistent with the general plan cannot legally be moved forward. The old days are gone and the new days are here. Thats just the way it is.

So are we saying just leave it to be a ghost town ? That is what it is becoming, closing business, lack of jobs. People coming through that Town Square think it is the best thing that has happened to highway four and drive up from all around to visit the shops and have lunch way more then the locals do. I am just saying take a look around you and see what is really happening to this county.Wish we really had more say as to who is with all the power and think they are the all mighty God in San Andras-- They will be judged one day !!

How many years has Castle & Cook waited to get their project approved?
What did the county do to block their project, all these years?

Now, wait & see if the City of Angels will start or state their development path for the city? Will it head towards Tryonville? Time will tell if Tryon had a conflict of interest since the start up of Angel Camps General Plan & Sphere of Influence.

Castle and Cooke purchased property that was zoned ag preserve/natural resource. They knew what it was when they bought it. They knew that asking for a zoning amendment in the middle of a new general plan was a risk. They knew there was no sewer and water available and they knew they had to cut down 8000 trees. C&C IS not and SHOULD not be shocked. They just did not give Ms. Willis the credit she deserved and they assumed that Russ Thomas would still be in office right now.

Zoning can be changed. Pay close attention to the new general plan. You will see a lot of zoning changes by the county. A change from what some spent money for a zone change from unclassifed to RA-10. Now all zoning is up in the air. Can you say Mintier/Harnish $900 thousand plus for an unfinished flawed GP. Can you say "SUCKERS!!"
