Iryna Maybrook

    Iryna passed away peacefully at Mark Twain Convalescent Hospital after surviving a serious stroke in 2012 that left her paralyzed by never broke her loving spirit.

   She was born Elizabeth Baumier in Bamburg,

2nd NY prison escapee captured

   Although wounded, the final NY prison escapee was captured alive, per NY authorities.

   The other prisoner was killed when he tried to fire at officers arresting him.

   The Calaveras Volunteer deputies helped out at the Angels Murphys Lions Club Car Show at Utica Park in Angels Camp.

   Although the heat was severe, over 100 vehicles from prior to 1980 took part in the show.

Jimmy Fallon has surgery on hand

   Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon reportedly had minor surgery after injuring his hand on Friday, June 26, 2015.

   That was the reason the network ran a rerun.  He is reportedly doing fine and hopes to be back to normal soon.

Ford overturns in Escalon

German Shepherd on Hwy 99

   There are apparently a little over 200 full time residents in the town of Markleeville. For a week, they have been watching as the Washington Fire moves closer.

   Now we understand that some of the residents have already left the area, to avoid a last minute escape.  Mandatory evacuations have not yet been ordered.

Car blows tire and overturns

   June 27, 2015 at 3:15 PM:  A car apparently blew a tire and overturned at northbound Hwy 99 and Bradbury Road in Turlock.

   It isn't yet known if there are injuries.  Use extra caution if in that area.

Burglary reported in Avery

   On June 26, 2015 a burglary was reported at a business at Hwy 4 and Sheep Ranch Road in Avery.

  No other details are available at this time.  The Calaveras Sheriff took a report.

Lake Fire in San Bernardino County

   The Lake Fire is now over 30,000 acres in size, however containment is now at 40% per CalFire.

   The Washington Fire in Alpine County is now at 17,622 acres and is now 19% contained. Hwy 4 and Hwy 89 remain closed.

Fire reported in Jamestown

   June 27, 2015 at 12:40 PM:  A fire has been reported at Harvard Mine Road and Cemetery Road in Jamestown.

   CalFire has dispatched several units to the scene. Power lines are reported not down, but in the trees. Avoid the area if possible.

Loma Fire near Antioch

   The Loma Fire, which was reported around 4:30 on Wednesday, June 24, 2015 burned 550 acres before being brought under control.

Big Rig blocking Hwy 4 at Big Trees Village

   June 25, 2015 at 9:45 AM:  A big rig broke down on Hwy 4 near Big Trees Village Drive in Ebbetts Pass and is blocking the roadway.

Overturned big rig on Hwy 4

   June 24, 2015 at 7:30 AM:  An overturned big rig has been reported at Hwy 4 and Obyrnes Ferry Road in Copperopolis.

   It is blocking the roadway, so be extra careful if headed in that direction. Also, Caltrans has been notified that large gouge marks are left in the pavement by the truck.

Pedestrian hit by car in McDonalds lot

   June 25, 2015 at 6:05 AM:  A pedestrian has reportedly been struck by a vehicle in the parking lot of McDonalds on Shafer in Atwater.

Calaveras Supervisors holding Closed Session

    On Tuesday June 30, 2015 the Calaveras Supervisors will meet at 4:30 PM in Closed Session.

   They purpose stated on the agenda is to appoint a new Environmental Management Control Officer, presumably to replace Brian Moss, who got promoted to Assistant CAO.

Ex-Cal Fire Chief found "Guilty"

      The jury in the Orville 'Moe' Fleming murder trial has found the former Cal Fire Chief "guilty" of 2nd degree murder.

   We aren't sure when he will be sentenced.  His girlfriend and apparently previously a stripper he hired, was killed at the home they shared.

Suspicious person looking for "Big Pot" signs?

   A suspicious looking person was reported to the Calaveras Sheriff around 4 PM on June 23, 2015 on Hwy 12 in San Andreas, in a black top and white shorts, hitching a ride to Valley Springs.

   It is believed this is Mr. Big Pot, looking for his stolen signs.  Word is that this scruffy looking person was crying.  The Sheriff took no report.

  Mr. "Big Pot" has been trying to raise money to live on by putting up large signs in Murphys asking for donations to his 'project' to Stop Big Pot from coming to Murphys.

   He reported his signs have been stolen from their locations on Big Trees Road in Murphys. Now don't laugh! He takes this very seriously and truly needs the money, possibly for beer.(hic)

   On June 23, 2015  the Calaveras Sheriff's Office arrested Richard Dean Keener (57) of Salida, on Railroad Flat Road in Mountain Ranch for allegedly Receiving Stolen Property over $950, Carrying

   While some people fear the radical ISIS type terrorists, the fact is that nearly all killings in the US have been from homegrown white radical extremists.

CCWD withdraws complaint of Asphalt Plant

   On June 23, 2015 CCWD (Calaveras County Water District) sent out a press release stating that they have withdrawn their appeal of the Calaveras Planning Directors decision on the Ford's Asphalt Plant along the Calaveras River in Rancho Calaveras.

   The appeal hearing is Thursday, June 25, 2015 at 9 AM in the Supervisor Chambers.

Brian Moss chosen as Assistant CAO Calaveras County

   The head of the Department of Environmental Services, Brian Moss, has been chosen as the new Assistant to the CAO of Calaveras County.

   Moss had been overseeing Animal Services, but had recently been criticized for his stance on the cruel trapping of wild animals.

Stanislaus County Sheriff arrests one of their own for alleged theft

   Apparently Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office had been investigating missing money from the Inmate Welfare Fund.  This is money kept for jailed inmates from their families.

First Friday in July in Murphys Park

   On Friday, July 3, 2015 Grover Anderson and Jill Warren will be the featured performers starting at 5:30 PM at Murphys Community Park.

Pickup runs off Independence Road in Mokelumne Hill

   June 23, 2015 at 1:15 PM:  A blue pickup has reportedly run off of Independence Road near Ridge Road in Mokelumne Hill.

Sonora man charged with Animal Cruelty per police

   After an apartment manager turned in a video of a man in a red Toyota grabbing a cat by the tail and swinging it, hitting in on the ground, Sonora Police investigated.

   Spencer Morse, (19) of Sonora
 according to police, admitted slamming this cat on the ground and apparently one other cat.  He was charged with alleged Animal Cruelty.  The cat died from its injuries.

     Morse apparently told authorities he was mad because a week before the cat had bitten him.

"Eight is Enough's" Dick Van Patten dies

   Dick Van Patten was a Hollywood mainstay throughout much of his 86 years. We just learned that he died early this morning.

  Although he is best remembered for his TV show "Eight is Enough", he appeared in many other films and most recently could be seen occasionally playing Texas Hold'em in tournaments.

  UPDATE at 11 AM:  Minor injuries were involved in this collision. Per CHP the roadway is now clear.

 UPDATE:  Four vehicles are apparently involved in this collision per CHP.

Fire in West Point

   On June 22, 2015 at approximately 7:30 PM Cal Fire responded to a report of a vegetation fire in the 2800 block of Eganhoff Lane in West Point.

   Several units were dispatched and the fire was contained to a 30' x 30' spot of brush and vegetation.   The cause  has not been determined.

Two pickups loaded with hay, collide in Delhi

   June 23, 2015 at 8:15 AM:  Two pickups, both loaded with hay, have reportedly collided at Griffith Avenue and Letteau Avenue in Delhi.

   One vehicle was impounded. There was debris spread in the roadway. No injuries have been indicated in this crash.

Calaveras Supervisors meet to discipline, dismiss employee in Closed Session?

   The Calaveras Supervisors will hold a Closed Session today, Tuesday June 23, 2015 to discuss an employee for discipline, and dismiss an employee before their regular Board meeting.

   The next Closed Session item is Conference with Legal counsel, anticipated litigation, significant exposure to litigation.

Oak tree down on Hwy 49

   June 23, 2015 at 7 AM:  CHP is en route to the Plymouth area on Hwy 49 where an oak tree is reportedly down in the roadway.

   Use extra caution if headed in that direction until the road is cleared.

Washington Fire in Alpine County

   As of June 22, 2015 at 9:45 PM the Washington Fire has burned 13,562 acres on BLM land near Marleeville.

   Hwys 4 and 89 are both closed at this time.  Firefighters are working to prevent the fire's spread into Markleeville at this time, which is around 3 miles away.

Park Hill Fire in San Luis Obispo

   As of June 22, 2015 at 5 PM, after destroying 2 homes, 4 mobile homes and 2 motorhomes being used as permanent residences, along with 10 outbuildings, and 7 vehicles, the Park Fire in San Luis Obispo County is 80% contained.

   It has burned 1800 acres so far. Evacuations were lifted last night. Carbon buildup from a vehicle exhaust system was the cause of this fire.

   Cal Fire has just released details about fires of interest in the state of California.

   In the two weeks since it opened, "Jurassic World" has taken in over $400 million in the US and over $1 billion worldwide.

    This is the fastest any movie has ever passed the $1 billion mark.

Fire reported in Modesto

   June 22, 2015 at 4:15 PM:  A fire has been reported at Santa Fe Avenue and Claus Road in Modesto.

   Fire personnel are en route to the scene. Avoid the area if possible.

Traffic collision in Turlock

   June 22, 2015 at 4:10 PM:  A traffic collision has been reported on Hwy 99 at West Monte Vista Avenue in Turlock.

  A pickup hit the guardrail and is now in the center divide. CHP is en route. It isn't yet known if there are injuries.

Grass Fire in Sonora

   UPDATE:  They are beginning to get this fire under control. Air cancelled, but one dozer and two more engines to continue.

   UPDATE:  The fire is now contained at approximately 5 acres.

Body found in Tuolumne River

      Stanislaus Sheriff's deputies were first dispatched to 7th Street along the Tuolumne River to investigate a body found in the water there.

   Jordan Spieth, 21 years old, has won the US Open Golf Tournament; and on a golf course that appeared to be dying.

   June 22, 2015 at 10:25 AM:  CHP received a report that a truck accidentally pulled some lines down on Yankee Hill Road in Columbia.

   CHP notified AT&T and they are sending someone out to make repairs.

Motorcycle Crashes in Mokelumne Hill

   According to CHP, on June 20, 2015 Daniel Rau (64) of Mountain Ranch was driving his 2012 Harley Davidson motorcycle on Ridge Road in Mokelumne Hill at 40 MPH

Lake Fire in San Bernardino National Forest

      Authorities still are not sure how the Lake Fire started on June 17, 2015 but it has now burned over 17,000 acres.

  It is now considered to be 21% contained, but 500 homes are threatened and there are many evacuations in the area, along with road closures.

Railroad Flat Burglary

   On June 21, 2015 a resident on Railroad Flat Road in Railroad Flat reported that someone was trying to break into their home.

   Apparently they were gone when the Calaveras Sheriff deputy arrived. They took a report of the incident.

   On June 20, 2015 a resident on Salmon Road in Copperopolis reported a burglary.

Alpine County Fire grows to 6500 acres

   A fire that started small on Friday afternoon in the Markleeville area of Alpine County, has now caused Ebbetts Pass to be closed to travelers.

   This fire is 6500 acres and is called the Washington Fire.  We will watch for more info on this one., currently on the Markleeville side of Ebbetts Pass.

Commendation to Firefighters on Fathers Day

   The Sierra Sentinel cannot remember a Sunday with more emergency calls for firefighters as today has been.

     Whether it was traffic collisions, fires big or small, medical emergencies or a water rescue, our Mother Lode firefighters worked all day this Father's Day. A big thank you to all of you from all of us!

Fire reported at Stanislaus County Park

   UPDATE:  This was only 100' of roadside grass. One unit is handling. Others were released.

   June 21, 2015 at 4:15 PM:  A truck and trailer have been reported on fire on Hwy 120 at New Priest Grade in Jamestown.

   Fire personnel and CHP are en route to the scene. Avoid the area if possible.


Fire on McHenry Boulevard re-ignites

   June 21, 2015 at 3:50 PM:  The fire on McHenry has re-ignited near Hogue Road in Modesto.  A fire engine has been dispatched to the scene.


Large Warehouse fire in Modesto

   UPDATE:  CHP is at the scene. Westbound Hatch had to be shut down due to fire.

Another Fire at Woodward Reservoir

  June 21, 2015 at 1:55 PM:  Another fire has been reported at Woodward Reservoir near the campground.

   Cal Fire personnel are responding to the scene. Avoid the area if possible. The Vallecito crew and 2 dozers are also responding.

CalFire Training Class results in forest fire--Cook Fire

   June 21, 2015 at 1:45 PM:  A training fire at the UC Sierra Foothills Research Center on Scott Forbes Drive in Browns Valley escaped, causing a forest fire in the area on June 18, 2015.

   It is currently 158 acres, but is 90% contained.

Flooding on Jack Tone Road

   June 21, 2015 at 1:40 PM:  Jack Tone Road is reportedly flooding due to what appears to be a broken pipe in a vineyard near Liberty Road, outside Clements.

   Authorities are trying to contact the property owner. Avoid the area if possible.

Fire reported in Modesto

   June 21, 2015 at 1:35 PM:  A brush fire has been reported at Crocus Drive and Cottonwood Court in Modesto, just off Hwy 108.

   Fire personnel are responding to the scene.

New fire reports in Oakhurst part of Sky Fire

   June 21, 2015 at 1:25 PM:  Callers reporting explosions in Oakhurst at Country Club Road and Road 632 have been told it is possibly trees or transformers exploding in the Sky Fire in the Sierra National Forest.

   The Sky Fire is near Fishcamp and is now 500 acres and is 40% contained on the perimeters. When a fire personnel investigated they found an exploded transformer in the Country Club Road area and have notified PG&E. The roadway will be closed for awhile.

2nd collision on Gurr in Merced

   June 21, 2015 at 12:30 PM:  A 2nd collision has been reported on Gurr Road at Hwy 140 in Merced.

   A Chrysler van and a Ford pickup were involved. Major injuries have been indicated in this collision. Avoid Gurr Road while CHP is clearing up these collisions.

Boat seat on Hwy 4/ Copperopolis

  June 21, 2015 at 11:35 AM:  A boat seat has been reported in the lanes on Hwy 4 near Horseshoe in Copperopolis.

   Use extra caution if in that area until CHP can clear.

Fire at Woodward Reservoir

   UPDATE:  First to arrive reported the fire is only 1 acre in size at this time.

U-turn attempt on Hwy 120//now stuck

   June 21, 2015 at 10:40 AM;  A vehicle reportedly tried to make a U-turn at Hwy 120 and Old Priest Grade between Moccasin and Groveland, hit the side of the mountain and got stuck there.

   CHP and a tow truck are responding. Use extra caution in that area as roadway is blocked.

Park Hill Fire in San Luis Obispo County

 UPDATE on June 21, 2015 at 7:15 AM:  Cal Fire has updated the Park Hill Fire to 1200 acres with 15% containment.

Traffic collsion near Hilmar

   June 21, 2015 at 9:30 AM:  A traffic collision at Morgan Road and Ehrlich Road near Hilmar was reported.

   CHP and other emergency personnel are responding to the scene. Use extra caution in the area.

Collision in Keyes

  June 21, 2015 at 8:50 AM: CHP is at the scene of a traffic collision at Hwy 99 and Keyes Road in the town of Keyes, where a vehicle is now 40' off the roadway into the bushes.

  A tow truck and ambulance are en route to that location. Use extra caution if in that area. There was also reports of a bumper and other debris in the roadway.

Bicyclists vs dog in Modesto

  June 21, 2015 at 8:25 AM:  Bicyclists reportedly have collided with a dog at Carver Road and Hwy 219 in Modesto.

   Three CHP units are now at the scene. An ambulance has been dispatched. It doesn't say if it's for the cyclists or the dog.

Oakland A's at home

   The Oakland A's (30-41) play the LA Angels (35-34) at home today. The game starts at 1 PM on CSCA.

Giants play in LA today

   The SF Giants (38-32) are in LA to play the Dodgers (38-31) today.   The game is at 5 PM on ESPN.

   June 21, 2015 at 7 AM:  A fire has been reported at Hwy 99 south of Waterloo Road in Stockton.

Fire in Turlock

  June 21, 2015 at 6:45 AM:  Firefighters are presently battling a structure fire at South 1st Street and I Street in Turlock.

   Avoid the area if possible as emergency vehicles are staging in the area.

Lake Fire in San Bernardino National Forest

   The Lake Fire in the San Bernardino National Forest is now 16,000 acres in size and is only 15% contained.

    No evacuation orders have been issued, but portions of the Pacific Crest Trail have been closed. There are 5 air tankers and 16 helicopters assigned to this fire.

Traffic collision on Hwy 99

   June 21, 2015 at 6:25 AM:  A traffic collsion has been reported on northbound Hwy 99 near Briggsmore in Modesto where a Toyota Prius ran off the road and over the embankment.

   Emergency personnel are en route to the scene. Use extra caution if in that area. A tow truck with at least 100' of cable is required.

Corinne Fire in Madera County update

   As of 8 PM on June 20, 2015 the Corinne Fire, located north of Auberry in Madera County had grown to 860 acres. Over 1400 firefighters are on the fire lines.

    It is 25% contained at this time. Many mandatory evacuations have been ordered in the area. Three outbuildings have been lost so far.

PIckup with horse trailer in crash

   June 20, 2015 at 8 PM:  A Toyota Prius and a pickup pulling a horse trailer collided at Hwy 120 and Hwy 99.  Use extra caution if in that area until cleared.

    A special tow vehicle was required to move the 20'horse trailer 5th wheel with two horses inside. An ambulance was required due to injuries, at least one injured was elderly.

Three car collision in Groveland

   June 20, 2015 at 7 PM:   A three car collision at Hwy 120 and Smith Staion Road in Groveland has left one person with major injuries after one vehicle overturned.

   The highway is now open after being blocked for over an hour. All three vehicles had to be towed away


Motorcycle and car collide on Parrots Ferry Road

   June 20, 2015 at 4:20 PM:  A motorcycle and a car have collided on Parrotts Ferry Road and Columbia Village Drive in Columbia.

   An ambulance is en route. Use caution if in the area as the roadway is blocked at that location.

Collision in Lodi

   June 20, 2015 at 4 PM:  A traffic collision has been reported at Turner Road and Ray Road in Lodi.

   CHP is en route. It isn't yet known if there are injuries. Use caution if in the area.

Escapees from Rite Of Passage

   There are two escapees being searched for in the Fricot City Road area. They have escaped from the Rite of Passage at Fricot City, the school for out of area convicted teens.

Squirrel entertains baseball crowd

  At the Phillies game last night a grey squirrel entertained the crowd, climbing and jumping and even went into the dugout.

   People were taking selfies and some looked fearful as the squirrel jumped from place to place.

Massive Injuries in Dos Palos crash--Hwy 152 blocked-fatality

   UPDATE:  Hwy 152 is re-open partially. All patients have been transported.

Pickup truck fire causes wildfire near Oakhurst

   A 500+ acre blaze that is only 15% contained near Oakhurst, was apparently caused by a pickup that overheated and caught fire, starting the fire.

   Firefighters have been fighting winds in the Madera County wildfire, and warn people who's vehicle are overheated to pull out in paved areas if possible.

Tom Hanks to play pilot hero

   Clint Eastwood gave the job of playing hero pilot Sully Sullenberger to star Tom Hanks in the upcoming film version of the book.

   Hanks does seem like a perfect choice, even in size and looks. Should be a great movie.

Central Valley water districts sue state

   Apparently several California irrigation districts are suing the state over water rights. Whose water is it, anyway?

   They say the Governor and other state officials overstepped their authority by ordering farmers to stop pumping from some rivers during the drought.

Dad denies buying gun

   He may be frightened of being an accessory of some type in the hideous killings.  Ben Roof now apparently claims Dylan used his own money to buy the gun.

Railroad crossing arm causing hazard

  June 20, 2015 at 11:15 AM:  A railroad crossing arm is apparently studk part way down, blocking traffic at Hwy 88 and Blue Sky Drive in Ione.

Vehicle over the side near Phoenix Lake

   June 20, 2015 at 10:15 AM:  A vehicle is reportedly over the side and down in a ditch at Lyons Bald Mountain Road and Apple Valley Road in the Phoenix Lake area.

   Extrication is apparently required. Ambulance and other emergency personnel are responding. The vehicle is also smoking per the report.

Corrine Fire in Madera County grows

   As of June 19, 2015 at 6 PM Cal Fire has the Corrine Fire located north of Auberry in Madera County at 1000 acres.

   This fire is only 5 % contained at this time.

Pool Station road hazard

   June 19, 2015 at 6:15 PM:  A tree has fallen across Pool Station Road and at least one lane is unpassable.

Major Injury Collision on Hwy 4

   June 19, 2015 at 6 PM:  A head-on collision involving a pickup and a sedan caused major injuries to at least one victim.

   Hwy 4 and Stallion Way, just outside Angels Camp was the scene of the crash. Avoid the area if possible until CHP can handle the clean-up. Tow trucks and an ambulance are en route.

Fire in Vallecito--"Ponderosa Fire"

   UPDATE at 3:15 PM:  Cal Fire says they now have the "Ponderosa Fire" fully contained at 5 cares. One outbuilding was damaged.

   June 19, 2015 at 3:35 PM:  A motorcycle collided with a vehicle at Hwy 108 and Rawhide Road, near the Harley Davidson shop in Jamestown.

  UPDATE at 3:40 PM:  This fire was quickly contained at 2 acres, per CalFire. Two engines will remain for mop-up.

Traffic Collision in Ceres

   June 19, 2015 at 3:25 PM:  A traffic collision has been reported on Roeding Road near Faith Home Road in Ceres.

   Emergency vehicles, including an ambulance, are responding due to injuries. A solo vehicle hit a pole, which is now leaning.

Dead deer on Hwy 26

   June 19, 2015 at 11:45 AM: Traffic hazard reported.

 Use extra caution on Hwy 26 until Caltrans arrives to remove a deer that was hit by a vehicle at Hwy 26 and Silver Rapids in Rancho Calaveras.

Jackson Council may ban smoking in parks

   On June 22, 2015 at 7 PM the Jackson City Council (Amador County) will hold a regular meeting.

   On the agenda is a discussion about possibly banning smoking at all city parks.

Martha Stewart selling her empire?

  It apparently is true that Martha Stewart is in talks with Sequential Brands to possibly sell her empire. Sequential owns Linen n Things, the Franklin Mint and others.

   Stewart began many years ago baking cakes and flower arranging to become a multi-billion dollar company called Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. Stewart is now 73.

Fire in Herald area

   UPDATE:  A total of 130 acres was burned before this fire was fully contained.

Traffic collision in Glencoe area

  UPDATE:  Three CHP are currently at the scene. There were injuries in this collision.

Del Rio threatened by fire--McHenry Ave. shut down

 UPDATE June 19, 2015: Three homes were lost in the Del Rio area and it is believed the Lotus Gardens suffered some major damage, but firefighters late last night were able to fully contain this fire.

   30 to 40 acres were burned. The winds were causing severe spreading into homes in the area.
