I-5 Closed down due to SINKHOLE!

   Around noon May 31, 2016 a sinkhole was reported to CHP on I-5 in San Joaquin County.

   All lanes are shut down until further notice in that area and are being detoured onto Hwy 33.

Teenage boys bodies recovered at Woodward

    May 31, 2016: The bodies of the two 15 year old boys who disappeared after jumping off a boat at Woodward Reservoir in Oakdale on Saturday were recovered today, three days later.

   Search teams spent two days searching without results and had ceased the search on Sunday night.

  In our unofficial, informal and unscientific polls by telephone, we contacted 25 people in District 1 and in District 4 Supervisorial Districts.

CalFire changes burn permit hours

  As of today May 31, 2016 burning with a valid permit will be allowed only between the hours of 7 PM to 8 AM in both Tuolumne and Calaveras counties.

  You must follow all of the other rules for burning, including staying with the burn pile. You also must check with the Air Pollution Control to see if it is a burn day.

Both Pot groups get signatures required

   According to the Calaveras County Elections Office, both the Anti-Pot group and the Pro-regulation of pot group got and turned in the required number of signatures for their petitions.

  The elections office has 30 days to verify the signatures and if they check out there could be TWO ballot initiatives in November in Calaveras County.

Caltrans working on Hwy 26

   Be careful on Hwy 26 as Caltrans is working on adding left turn lanes near St. Andrews in Valley Springs.

    There are so many collisions on Hwy 26 and Supervisors Edson and Kearney think there is no need for developers to help with safety in the area. It's a shame.

Traffic hazard on Hwy 4

  May 31, 2016 at 2:40 PM:  Some type of traffic hazard has been reported on Hwy 4 west of Copperopolis.

   CHP is en route to the scene. It isn't clear exactly what the hazard is, so be careful if headed that way.

Hay Fire in Snelling

   May 31, 2016 at 2:35 PM:  A hay fire has been reported at Olsen Road and Los Cerritos Road in Snelling.

   Fire personnel are en route to the area.

Traffic collision in Plymouth

   May 31, 2016 at 2 PM:  An  elderly male was involved in a traffic collision at Fiddletown Road and Shenandoah Road in Plymouth, running off the roadway.

  An ambulance is en route to the scene. Use extra caution if headed in that direction.

Arrest for vehicle theft in Valley Springs

   On May 30, 2016 California Highway Patrol arrested Raymond Edward Correia (75) of Valley Springs on Milton Road in Valley Springs.

   Correia was booked into the Calaveras County Jail for alleged Vehicle Theft and Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, both felonies and released on bond.

Mountain Ranch man arrested in Angels Camp

   On May 30, 2016 Calaveras Sheriff's deputies arrested Brian Alan Bennington (35) of Mountain Ranch, on Main Street in Angels Camp.

    Bennington was booked into the Calaveras County Jail for alleged Felony Vandalism, value over $400.

CHP Memorial Holiday stats

  Over the Memorial Day weekend, CHP reports that 7 people were arrested in Calaveras County for DUI, 1 was arrested for possession of a stolen Honda Civic and another was arrested for possession of a stolen John Deere Tractor.

   CHP also handled 6 accidents and wrote 50 citations, mostly for speeding.

Coyotes out hunting

  Watch for coyotes in the neighborhoods of Ebbetts Pass. They are hunting for any critters they can catch; quail, chickens and even cats that you leave outside.

  They are even being seen in daylight hours, so protect the birds and other pets you love. They are always hunting.

Nevada City celebrates Indy

   The Indy 500 was won by Alexander Rossi of Nevada City yesterday. He took a chance and did not gas up before the last 10 laps, putting him in the lead.

Fire update at Melones

  UPDATE @ 8 AM May 31, 2016: Per CalFire this fire was held to 85 acres overnight and is now 60% contained.

  As of 7 PM on May 30, 2016 CalFire reports that the Tulloch Fire at Melones is 85 acres after a more accurate reading and is now 30% contained.

Traffic collision starts fire in Acampo

   UPDATE:  The cab of a 30' box truck was destroyed, but the driver suffered only minor injuries in this collision.

Collision on Hogan Dam Road

   May 30, 2016 at 6 PM:  A collision has been reported on Hogan Dam Road near Hwy 26 in Valley Springs.

   An ambulance is en route to the scene due to head injuries. CHP is present and a tow truck has been dispatched.  Be cautious if headed that way.

   UPDATE: No injuries are indicated in this collision.

Fire at Melones

   May 30, 2016 at 5 PM:  Per CalFire a fire reported about 3:10 PM is about 100 acres at this time on the Tuolumne County side of Melones Reservoir on New Peoria Road near Old Melones Road.

   Named the Tulloch Fire, 125 firefighters, 15 engines, 5 airtankers and 2 bulldozers are assigned to the fire.

Grass and campaign signs burning

   May 30, 2016 at 4:35 PM:  A fire has been reported on southbound Hwy 99 at Hammer Lane in Stockton, where grass and some campaign signs are burning.

   Fire personnel are en route to the scene. Be cautious if in the area.

Hit and Run collision on Hwy 88

  May 30, 2016 at 1:40 PM:  A collision was reported on Hwy 88 at Waterloo Road but apparently the vehicle that caused the collision left the scene.

   CHP is en route to the location. No injuries are indicated.

Three vehicle collision in Pinecrest

   UPDATE:  Three tow trucks have been dispatched to pick up the vehicles.

Hwy 4 backed up

   May 30, 2016 at 11:55AM:  I would avoid Hwy 4 for the rest of the day as weekend travelers are leaving Ebbetts Pass in droves already.

   Traffic is backed up even at the stop sign in Angels Camp (Hwy 49).  Wait until tomorrow to go to the store or wherever, when its safer.

Traffic control at Yosemite Junction in Jamestown

   May 30, 2016 at 10:35 AM:  As often happens on holiday weekends, CHP is at the Hwy 120 and Yosemite Junction in Jameztown to help control traffic heading to Yosemite for the day.

   Be cautious if headed in that direction as cars can be stopped in front of you. It's better to visit Yosemite on a non-holiday.

Hit and run on Hwy 88

   May 30, 2016 at 10:30 AM:  A hit and run has been reported on Hwy 88 near Pevatali Road in Jackson.

   A white van is apparently the vehicle that fled the scene. CHP has been advised and is en route to the scene.

Dog on Hwy 26

   May 30, 2016 at 9:50 AM:  A dog identified as a Sharpei, has been reported on Hwy 26 near the onramp to Hwy 99 in Stockton.

   Be extra cautious until CHP can rescue it.

Stockton man arrested on Hwy 12

   On May 29, 2016 CHP arrested Cody Lee Rackley (29) of a unknown address in Stockton, on Hwy 12 near Camanche Reservoir.

   Rackley was booked into the Calaveras County Jail for alleged Vehicle Theft, Possession of a Stolen Vehicle and Violation of Parole, all felonies and for Being Under the Influence of a Controlled Substance, a misdemeanor.

Arrest at San Andreas DMV Office

   On May 29, 2016 Calaveras Sheriff's deputies arrested Mark Andrew Brown (54) of San Andreas, at the DMV office on Mountain Ranch Road.

Sheep Ranch man arrested

  On May 28, 2016 the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office arrested Mark Raymond Trotter (46) of Sheep Ranch at his residence on Armstrong Road.

   Trotter was booked into the Calaveras County Jail for alleged Violation of Parole and Battery with Serious Bodily Injury, both felonies.

Assault arrest in Angels Camp

   On May 28, 2016 Angels Camp Police arrested Kimberly Lee Jones (57) of Angels Camp on Booster Way.

   Jones was booked into the Calaveras County Jail for alleged Assault with a Deadly Weapon, not a Firearm.

70 Fire in Butte County

  On May 29, 2016 CalFire and several other agencies worked together to extinguish what started as 5 separate fires along Hwy 70 that grew together to form 3 fires in Butte County.

   Would you say this was an ARSON? Is that starting this year already. Fortunately, these fires, named the 70 Fire, were extinguished at 30 acres.

Crash on Hwy 120 in Manteca

   May 29, 2016 at 3:10 PM:  A collision has been reported at Hwy 120 and Airport Blvd. in Manteca.  A woman is very upset each time a car passes.

   CHP and other emergency personnel are en route to the scene. Be extra cautious in that area.

Two teens die in Mokelumne River

   On May 28, 2016 two teens drowned in the Mokelumne River on the Amador County side near Moore Creek.  This comes after a local boy died in the Stanislaus River just two weeks ago and two teens missing at Woodward yesterday.

   People need to be more careful. The rapids can quickly carry you away and under the water. And the recent snow melt makes the water even colder. Wear life jackets.

Complaints about petition collectors in Copperopolis

    On May 27, 2016 the Calaveras Sheriff's Office receive three complaints about people gathering signatures for a petition on Main Street in Copperopolis.

   A disturbance, a verbal altercation and other complaints have been common as certain signature gatherers get aggressive about having people sign.

Cross vandalised

  On May 28, 2016 vandalism was reported on Daphne Street in Valley Springs.

   A cross had been damaged. The Calaveras Sheriff's Office took a report.

Valley Springs man arrested

   On May 27, 2016 the Calaveras Sheriff's Office arrested Michael James Messenger (23) of Valley Springs at his residence on Garner Place.

   Messenger was booked into the Calaveras County Jail for allegedly Inflicting Corporal Injury on a Spouse, a felony and for outstanding warrants.

Search for 2 missing teenage boys continues

   Two 15 year old boys reportedly jumped off a boat at Woodward Reservoir in Oakdale around 3:30 May 28, 2016.  They were not wearing life preservers.

   Stanislaus County search and rescue teams are searching for the boys, although they feel it is more of a recovery search at this point.

Major injury crash in Twain Harte

  May 28, 2016 at 3:15 PM:  A car reportedly left Hwy 108 and went into the trees near Confidence Road in Twain Harte.

   The driver apparently suffered major head injuries and was transported to the hospital. Be extra cautious as a fire truck is blocking the roadway.

   May 28, 2016 at 2:45 PM:   A collision has been reported on Curran Road at the Camanche Hills Hunting Preserve in Ione.

Car leaves I-5 and lands on roadway below freeway

   May 28, 2016 at 1:55 PM:  A car left I-5 and landed on the intersection of Manthey Road and County Hospital Road below the freeway in French Camp.

91 acres burn in Butte County

   May 27, 2016:  A fire that started around 1:45 PM grew to 91 acres before being controlled by CalFire crews.

   It was near Bangor, on Laporte and Dunstone Roads and was named the Dunstone Fire.

Plane crash lands in Groveland

   May 27, 2016 at 3 PM:  The Tuolumne County Sheriff reports that a small plane crashed into a wall while attempting to land at the Groveland Airport around 1:30 PM.
 
   The pilot was taken to the hospital with an ankle injury.

   May 27, 2016 at 1 PM:  A traffic collision has been reported in the parking lot of MarVal at Hwy 26 and Hwy 12 in Valley Springs.

   On May 27, 2016 a resident ordered a Trees, Inc crew to leave the property and as usual the Trees, Inc. people called the Sheriff.

    Trying to get the homeowner in trouble, the crew reported hearing shots fired.  If people don't want all their trees cut down, leave them alone, PG&E!! No report was taken of the incident by the Calaveras Sheriff.

Trespassing arrest on Love Creek in Avery

   On May 26, 2016 Calaveras Sheriff's deputies arrested New Leif Flows Like a River Jarvie (40) of Arnold with no known address, on Love Creek Road in Avery.

   Jarvie was booked into the Calaveras County Jail for alleged Trespassing and refusing to leave the property, a misdemeanor, and was released with a Citation.

Rhonert Park man arressted in Rancho Calaveras

   On May 26, 2016 Calaveras Sheriff's deputies arrested Jasson John Burt (49) of Rhonert Park on Hwy 26 at Vista Del Lago in Rancho Calaveras.

   Burt was booked into the Calaveras County Jail for allegedly Bringing a Controlled Substance into the Jail, a felony and for Controlled Substance Paraphernalia, Possession of Concentrated Cannabis, misdemeanors and for an outstanding warrant.

Arrest for talking to Prisoner

   On May 26, 2016 around 12:30 AM Angels Camp Police arrested Emily Lucienne Cote (25) of El Sobrante on Six Mile Road outside Murphys.

   Cote was booked into the Calaveras County Jail for alleged Unauthorized Communication with a Prisoner, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of a Narcotic, Controlled Substance and Possession of Unlawful Paraphernalia, all misdemeanors, and was released with a Citation.

Hit and Run collision in San Andreas

   May 27, 2016 at 9:40 AM:  A hit and run collision has been reported on Mountain Ranch Road just past the hospital in San Andreas. No injuries were indicated.

   Apparently a white Dodge Ram was hit by a silver Dodge pickup which fled eastbound on Mountain Ranch Road.  CHP is at the scene.

Roll of carpet on Hwy 120 in Jamestown

   May 27, 2016 at 8:40 AM:  A roll of carpet that apparently fell out of someone's truck is reportedly in the roadway at Hwy 120 and Old Priest Road in Jamestown.

   Be extra cautious if headed in that direction until CHP can clear the lanes.

Council of Governments holding June meeting

  On June 1, 2016 the Calaveras Council of Governments will hold their June meeting at the Board of Supervisors chambers in San Andreas

   Their agendas are intentionally vague but there is a mid year report by the Calaveras Public Works department listed. There is also a report on a Closed Session that they held on May 4, 2016. We are not familiar with this item.

   May 26, 2016 at 5:45 PM:  A car and a motorcycle have reportedly collided on Grant Line Road and Bird Road in the Tracy area.

   The car apparently crossed over and struck the motorcycle. An ambulance and two tow trucks are responding to the scene.

Woman dies in Riverbank area collision

   According to Modesto Police, at about 5:30 AM on May 26, 2016 officer responded to several 911 calls of a traffic collision involving two vehicles on Claus Road north of Milnes Road

Calaveras County paying $830 G's to other counties for Butte Fire

  On the May 30, 2016 Calaveras Supervisors agenda is an item to approve paying other counties for their assistance in the Butte Fire.

   The total amount is said to be $830,000 owed to San Joaquin County, City of Folsom, Stanislaus County, Sacramento County, Tuolumne County, City of Fresno, El Dorado County and Los Angeles County.

Pubic Access TV studio finally going to Calaveras County

  On the May 30, 2016 Calaveras Supervisors agenda is an agenda item donating the Public Access TV Studio to Calaveras County, after CCTV buys land under it from CCWD.

   Over the years there has been much controversy over who really should own the Public Access Studio and who owned the land, which was totally controlled by a small group for a long period of time.   Finally, it looks like the County will get full control of the building.

   May 26, 2016 at 7:10 AM:  A single calf has been reported on Six Mile Road near Hwy 4 in the Vallecito area.

Angels Camp Police make 20 Frog Jump arrests

    The Angels Camp Police Department, as always, was kept busy during the Frog Jump last weekend.

   On May 26, 2016 the PD reported they made 20 arrests during the 4 day event.

   At around 11:30 PM last night May 25, 2016 a semi and a car collided near the railroad tracks on Hwy 99 at the 16th Avenue offramp in Madera where one person did not survive.  This was cleared finally around 6 AM this morning.

  Then around 4 AM a pedestrian was reported on Hwy 99 near 7thAvenue in Madera and then that pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle. It isn't yet known why the man was on the freeway.

Joe Walsh and Laith Al Saadi take the prize

   While not the best looking contestant on "The Voice" his unbelievable guitar playing and ability to sing rock wowed America as Laith Al Saadi made it to the final four.

   As his final number, he teamed up with his idol, Joe Walsh (yes, of the Eagles) and they played "Rocky Mountain Way" as a duet. Amazing performance by both.  Al Saadi took 4th place in the contest, but we thought he was fantastic.

Mama bear and 3 cubs hang around house at Tahoe

   The video of a family of bears taken by homeowners shows that the mama a three cubs were feasting on a freezer containing fish sticks and other goodies when they had left the garage door open.

   One cub was seemingly unafraid and unwilling to give up his fish sticks until a
deputy came right up to him.  If you are afraid of the bears, get a big dog or keep everything locked up tight.  One person said that he cut a big hole in his fence for the bears to go through so they don't climb up and cause the fence to fall. Good idea!!

Dennis Ronald Wiebe of San Andreas

   Dennis Ronald "Unc" Wiebe passed away unexpectedly, yet peacefully on May 21, 2016 at his home on San Antonio Creek. He was 69.

Angels Camp man arrested

   On May 23, 2016 around 6:15 PM Angels Camp Police arrested Matthew Eric Hagaman (32) at the Stockton Foundry in Angels Camp.

   Hagaman was booked into the Calaveras County Jail for alleged Infliction of Corporal Injury on a Spouse, a felony.

Vehicle Theft Arrest in Moke Hill

   On May 23, 2016 around 10:25 PM the California Highway Patrol arrested Caleb Elisha Land, (37) of Mokelumne Hill at his residence on Jesus Maria Road.

   Land was booked into the Calaveras County Jail for alleged Vehicle Theft, a felony and released on bond.

Fire in Don Pedro area

   May 25, 2016 at 11:15 AM:  Cal Fire is responding to a vegetation fire on Arbolada Drive in the Don Pedro area near Salinas Street.

   Air support has been requested. Several water tenders are en route, along with bulldozers.

Another home invasion robbery

   The Tuolumne County Sheriff reports that another home invasion robbery occurred on May 24, 2016 just before 6 PM on Tuolumne Road.

   The home appears to have been targeted. The man was knocked down and around $2000 in cash was stolen.

Fire in Long Barn

  May 25, 2016 at 10:15 AM:  A fire has been reported on Hwy 108 at Long Barn.

   CalFire is responding to the scene. This seems to be alongside the roadway so be cautious if headed that way.

Traffic collision in Escalon

  May 25, 2016 at 9:35 AM:  A traffic collision was reported on Hwy 120 at Carrolton Road in Escalon involving a Nissan and a Toyota.

   Minor injuries have been indicated. A tow truck has been dispatched for the Toyota due to major front end damage.

First First Friday will be Second Friday??

 I know this looks strange, but the popular First Fridays in the Murphys Park will begin this year on June 10, 2016, the second Friday of June, due to Bret Harte graduation on the first Friday.

Home invasion robbery suspect arrested

      Tuolumne County Sheriff's deputies arrested Sean Evans, with no known address, on Friday, May 20, 2016 for the alleged Home Invasion Robbery in Jamestown on April 29, 2016.

   Evans is identified as a transient, and was identified through a photo lineup by the victim.

   May 23, 2016 at 3:45 PM:  A solo vehicle has reportedly overturned off Hwy 49 near Jack Page Road just outside Sonora.

   The Metz fire that started on May 22, 2016 near Soledad in Monterey County, has burned over 3800 acres.

   According to CHP on May 21, 2016 around 1:30 PM Jason Belche (40) of Ione was driving 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle on Hwy 4 near Main Street in Vallecito, westbound at an unknown rate of speed.

   On May 22, 2016 the California Highway Patrol arrested Ryan Dexter Lacy (26) of Antelope on Hwy 12 in Burson.

Valley Springs man arrested for alleged Kidnapping

    On May 22, 2016 around 2:35 PM Calaveras Sheriff's deputies arrested James Patrick O'Connell (31) of Valley Springs, at his residence on Alder Street.

    O'Connell was booked into the Calaveras County Jail for alleged Kidnapping, False Imprisonment with Violence and Inflicting Corporal Injury on a Spouse, all felonies, along with outstanding warrants.

Arnold man arrested

   On May 22, 2016 around 8 PM Calaveras Sheriff's deputies arrested Paul Geoffrey Mandell (71) of Arnold, at his residence on Valley View Drive.

   Mandell was booked into the Calaveras County Jail for allegedly having Prohibited to own Ammunition, etc., a felony.

Dorrington man arrested at Calaveras Fairgrounds

   On May 22, 2016 around 6:50 PM Calaveras Sheriff's deputies arrested Darrell Anthony Hale (41) of Dorrington at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds.

   Hale was booked for alleged Violation of Parole, a felony and for Disorderly Conduct due to Alcohol, a misdemeanor.

   On May 22, 2016 Calaveras Sheriff's deputies arrested Paul William Fowler (41) of Sonora at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds.

   Fowler was booked into the Calaveras County Jail for alleged Vehicle Theft, Grand Theft and Battery with Serious Bodily Injury, all felonies and for Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor and Obstructing or Resisting a Peace Officer, both misdemeanors.

   On May 22, 2016 around 12:50 PM the Calaveras Sheriff's Office arrested Casey Alan Challen (41) of Murphys on Main Street in Murphys.

   On May 21, 2016 around 11:30 PM the Angels Camp Police Department arrested three men on Hwy 49 near Monte Verda Street.

   Aaron D. Kaufmann (28) of Sonora was booked into the Calaveras County Jail for alleged felony Violation of Parole.  Robert Allan London (53) of Stockton was booked for alleged Violation of Parole, a felony and for DUI and DUI of .08 both misdemeanors and Abel Taguinod, Sr. ( 53) of Stockton was booked for alleged Felony Violation of Parole.

Fun at Frogtown

   On May 21, 2016 several incidents were reported needing the Calaveras Sheriff's Office at Frogtown:

   A lost wallet, a found child, a battery, a large group of teens smoking in the grass, verbal altercations, deputies separating two groups yelling at each other, an arrest at around 11:30 PM after a physical altercation on the ball field and yet another disturbance caused by an altercation just before midnight were all reported to the Sheriff.

Burglary in Murphys

   On May 21, 2016 a burglary was reported on Main Street in Murphys.

   A trailer had been broken into. The Calaveras Sheriff took a report of the incident.

Grand Theft in Jenny LInd

   On May 21, 2016 a resident on Sterling Court in Jenny Lind reported a Grand Theft to the Calaveras Sheriff's Office.

Burglary in Arnold

   On May 21, 2016 a resident on Grenoble in Arnold reported a burglary to the Calaveras Sheriff's Office.

   Outdoor decorations and equipment were stolen in the incident. The Calaveras Sheriff took a report.

Saturday night at the Fair

   If you plan to attend the show at the Calaveras County Fair tonight be sure and take along an umbrella.

   It began raining about 30 minutes ago, and will dampen a few spirits. The frogs will love it, though.

Car collision burns vehicle

   May 21, 2016 at 4:50 PM:  A vehicle reportedly ran off Lupe Road in Pine Grove and down an embankment, catching fire and burning.

   A woman was able to escape the vehicle, but an ambulance responded to the scene and a tow truck was dispatched.

Hay Fire in Hilmar

   May 21, 2016 at 3:35 PM:  Fire crews are at the scene of what started as a hay fire at the Clauss Dairy in Hilmar on Bloss Avenue.

    We don't have details on how much damage has been done, but fire crews, including CalFire responded immediately.

Complaints of petition harassment

   On May 20, 2016 the Calaveras Sheriff received complaints of aggressive signature gatherers harassing people, both in Arnold and in Valley Springs.

   To our knowledge the Sheriff has done nothing to stop this behavior, and the Elections department at Calaveras County has done nothing either.

Guy Meyers denied zoning change in Valley Springs (memories of 07-242)

   At the May 19, 2016 Calaveras Planning Commission meeting Guy Meyers was denied his request to change the zoning of one of his buildings.

   Even ValleySprings.com was asking the commissioners to be more flexible. Meyers reminded the commission that our economy died in '07 when the Calaveras Supervisors ended development. (Resolution 07-242 now requires 40 acre minimums to build a home).

   Robbie Mast, who grew up in Calaveras County, and was widely recognized for his ability in acting, along with his academic achievement, was lost near the Candy Rock

Burson Post Office burglarized

   On May 19, 2016 the US Post Office in Burson reported that boxes had been broken into during the night.

EgyptAir debris and luggage found

  May 20, 2016:  The Egyptian military has apparently located debris and passenger possessions in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea from the airliner that crashed two days ago.

   The pinger from the black box lasts for 30 days, so they are concentrating on that area to locate the main fuselage from the aircraft.

   UPDATE:  Per CHP no injuries are indicated in this collision. A tow truck is responding.

   The National Weather Service is predicting off and on rain and possible thunderstorms today and Saturday, May 20 and 21, 2016 for Calaveras County.

Calaveras County Elections Office says "We're not a policing agency!"

   We've had so many complaints and are aware that the anti-cannabis friends of Calaveras Supervisor Oliveira have been reported to the Sheriff's Office at least twice for apparently harassing people to sign their petition to ban pot, that we asked the County Elections department what they were doing about it.

  It's NOT OUR JOB, Man!!!

   In spite of the fact that it has been reported to them that Oliveira's people started 3 days prior to the date they are allowed to collect signatures, have been reported to the cops at least twice in the last 24 hours and refuse to leave when asked to, Calaveras County elections says "We're not a policing agency!"  per Robin Glanville.

Fire on Hwy 49 and Columbia Way

   May 19, 2016 at 3:05 PM:  A fire was reported on Hwy 49  and Columbia Way in Columbia.  It is a debris fire that apparently got away.

   Additional resources were dispatched to the scene to extinguish the fire.  Is it still legal to burn during the day??

Car rolled over on Hwy 4 in Copperopolis

   May 19, 2016 at 3 PM:  A car has reportedly rolled over and is on its roof off Hwy 4 at Telegraph Road in Copperopolis.

   Emergency personnel are responding to the scene. Be extra cautious if in the area.

Black Hawk helicopter finds lost hiker

   The missing hiker and his dog were found alive and well, although hungry, in Placer County this morning.

   He had been missing for 3 days after leaving for a short hike.

Fire in Columbia

   May 19, 2016 at 2:35 PM:  A fire reported on Bennett Road near Slate Rim Road in Columbia has been stopped at around 2 acres.

   Several engines, a bulldozer and air attack were immediately dispatched to prevent this fire from reaching at least one structure.

Debris found of crashed EgyptAir plane that crashed, NOT

   UPDATE:  The debris found was determined NOT to be from the missing airliner.

The plane that disappeared from radar screens overnight on a trip from Paris to Cairo is feared to have been crashed due to some form of terrorism.

   Debris from the plane #804 has been located off a small island. There were no survivors. EgyptAir does not feel it could have been a mechanical problem.

Think home prices are high in Calaveras??

   Prices for homes has come back some after the crash of '07, but still are not as high as they were.

   In the Bay Area, however, the median price for a home in April of 2016 was $687,000.  Of course, there are good jobs in the Bay Area. Here, you have to work for the government if you want security and benefits, yuck!

CBS News' Morley Safer dies

   Today it has been reported that Morley Safer died today at the age of 84. He had been with CBS for 50 years.

   He just retired last week.

   No injuries were indicated. Both cars are still drivable and they want to cancel CHP.

Soda theft in Arnold

  On May 18, 2016 the Calaveras Sheriff received a report that an outdoor soda machine on Hwy 4 in Arnold had been broken into.

   They didn't get the money out, but took all of the sodas.  The Sheriff's Office took a report of the theft.

Hwy 49 in downtown Angels Camp closed for parade

   Downtown Angels Camp will be the scene of a Youth Parade this morning. Hwy 49 will be closed for awhile.

   You might want to avoid the area until after lunch. Today is the first day of the Calaveras County Fair.

Cement mixer and van collide

   May 19, 2016 at 8:10 AM:  A cement mixer and a white van have reportedly collided on Hwy 120 just east of Hwy 99 in Manteca.

  The slow lane is blocked. We don't know if there are any injuries. Be cautious if headed that way.

Big rig rollover blocks Hwy 99 for hours

   May 19, 2016 at 7 AM:  CHP has just cleared a big rig collision at Hwy 99 and West Main Street in Ripon that occurred around 1:30 AM that caused one lane to be closed while they off-loaded the trailer.

   Two big rigs were involved; one was loaded with solar panels.  The overturned rig was uprighted and the roadway is now open per CHP.

OPED: Candyrock gun club should be permanently closed!!

   After years of NOISE abuse by the 1500 + shooters who signed that they use the illegal Ebbetts Pass Candyrock Gun Club, its time to lock the gate permanently.

   The USFS have no ability to oversee the criminal activity that we hear goes on there. It is NOT approved as a gun range by the NRA, and the filth that goes into the river because of it, is sickening.

   CHP is responding to the scene, but be cautious until they can locate the owner.

Traffic collision on 6 Mile Road

   UPDATE:  A third CHP has been dispatched to this collision. An ambulance is also responding.

Butte Fire Victims: Watch for trespassers looking for Morels

   Because of the fire here and in other counties, mushroom hunters are hitting it rich in their search for morel mushrooms, which they can then sell.

   They grow well not long after fires are out, so watch for anyone trespassing on your land. Some just can't resist looking anywhere.  Put up POSTED: No Trespassing signs!

Sonora Pass open--also Tioga Pass cleared

  Caltrans hard work has made it possible to open Sonora Pass Hwy 108 today.  There was debris to clear and repairs to be made.  Tioga Pass in Mono County through Yosemite Park is also now open.

   Workers got it all done in time for late Spring travelers to enjoy the pass until next snow season.

White semi rear-ends farm equipment in Patterson

   May 18, 2016 at 12:20 PM:  A white Peterbilt semi has reportedly rear-ended a piece of some type of farm equipment on Hwy 33 near Stanislaus Road in Patterson.

   CHP is en route. There is debris on the roadway. It isn't yet known if there are injuries. Avoid the area if possible.

"All the Way" will star Bryan Cranston

   The new movie about LBJ, called "All the Way" will star Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad).

   2 1/2 hours of makeup and 3" lifts propel him into the role each day of filming. Should be a good one. It premieres Saturday May 21, 2016 at 8 PM ET.

   The southbound lane is blocked. An ambulance is responding for minor injuries. Be cautious if in the area.
