Calaveras Arts Council Opens Ovations 2013 Performing Arts Series with
Brubeck Jazz
Institute Quintet

Calaveras Arts Council opens Ovations 2013 Performing Arts Series with the
Brubeck Jazz
Institute Quintet (BIJZ) at Dr. Elliott Smart Performing Arts Center located
at Bret Harte High
School, 323 Highway 49, in Angels Camp. Five impressively talented young
musicians make
up the current BIJQ and will perform on Sunday January 13 at 3:00pm. Adult
tickets are $25
and Youth 18 years and younger at $10.00. This year the Calaveras Community
Foundation is
underwriting a limited number of youth tickets to help expose youth to a
variety of music and
dance performances. There are only 150 tickets available for the entire
season so order
soon.

Established in 2000 to honor its distinguished alumni, Dave and Iola
Brubeck, the Brubeck
Institute Fellowship Program is an intensive program in jazz performance for
five musicians
who have just graduated from high school. The Brubeck Fellows become members
of the
Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet (BIJQ).

BIJQ members of the 2012-2013 are: Rane Roatta, tenor sax, from Miami, FL;
Thomas Kelley,
alto sax, from Canton, CT; Paul Bloom, piano, from Needham, MA; Adam
Goldman, bass, from
Pacific Palisades, CA; Malachi Whitson, drums, from Richmond, CA. They
represents the next
generation of jazz musicians who are pushing the music forward in new
directions. Jazz, a
true American art form, has evolved from the fusion of African music and
European classical
music in the late part of the 19th Century. It is unique in its use of
complex rhythms and
harmony. Also unique to jazz is that it is an improvised art form, no one
performance is ever
the same.

This is a very special performance. The arts council and BIJQ with the
audience want to
celebrate the life and music of Dave Brubeck who died on December 5, 2012.
Brubeck grew
up in the foothills and his footprints are securely imprinted here. BIJQ
will leave an
unforgettable impression in Calaveras as well.

The next Ovations performance is Sunday, January 27 with Joe Craven Trio.

Individual tickets are on sale now by going on line to www.calaverasarts.org
or by calling
(209) 754-1774.
