Castle and Cooke Wants What it Wants! NOW!

 OR MAYBE NOT!

A few months ago, Castle and Cooke, angry that their "Sawmill" housing project had not been yet approved, wrote a rather nasty letter to the county, threatening to sue unless Calaveras County hurries consideration of their project.

At Thursday's Planning Commission meeting, Dave Haley, who works for Castle and Cooke in Calaveras County, begged the Planning Commissioners for a continuance. HUH?

Obviously, Haley could see a denial vote coming and was trying to avoid that.  Planning Director Willis was not happy that her department had been forced by the threat of a lawsuit to drop other projects needing approval to work on Mr. Haleys.  And now he says it's okay to continue it until after the General Plan is complete?

Willis recommended denial of the project anyway!

Were they abusing the legal system and the county by making a threat thinking that our Planning Department would just bow down to him and give him what he wants?

Every taxpayer in Calaveras County should be angry that our tax money was again wasted by a big corporation, thinking we are a bunch of hicks!  Aren't people are getting tired of Castle and Cooke; and the friends who promote them.

Take the time to research Dec. 4, 2012 Supreme Court ruling regarding property rights. Arkansas
game&Fish Commission v. United States. Another site that may have info: NFIB.com.

Good Job Ms. Willis....the county has been waiting for someone like you for a long time

I'm not against growth. This county needs it. But Castle and Cooke does their own building cheap instead of selling the lots and letting local contractors build each home individually, like in Forest Meadows. They DO NOT provide good jobs to many people. In fact they have even been know to pick up their employees outside of valley building supply stores.

Residents of Copperopolis stated that the contractor on Town Square was local......but that few local carpenters were hired. Residents were disappointed to see van loads of "workers" from the valley come to the job site daily.

How can a developers threaten to sue the county if they do not hurry up and get before the planning committee and then ask for a continuance when they get there? This causes ALL other projects to go to the back burner....including the general plan. Then he asks for an extension?
