Pedestrian hit by car in West Point....

The woman who was hit by a car last night in West Point is well-known around town. Her name is Mary Gerow, 90, who lives in West Point.

She can be seen often walking and many residents have worried about her safety.

CHP just notified us that Mary was walking eastbound on Main Street in the dark, west of Pine, in the middle of the eastbound traffic lane.

Harold Hallet, 60, also of West Point, was driving a Dodge Ram Pickup eastbound on Main Street, west of Pine Street, at a stated speed of 15 MPH.

As Hallet  traveled around a sharp right turn in the roadway, he saw Mary walking in the middle of the traffic lane, directly in front of his pickup.

He was unable to avoid a collision with Mary.  As a result of the impact, Mary was thrown to the asphalt, where her head collided with the roadway.

This collision occurred during hours of darkness, per CHP and at this location there is only one streetlight operable.  The light it provides is only ambient and low level.

Mary was wearing dark clothing, and walking within the roadway, with her back to traffic.

According to the CHP report, this accident is still under investigation. Alcohol was not determined to be a factor.

Mary was airlifted to Kaiser South Hospital with moderate injuries. We will report her condition when we hear.

We aren't sure if she has any local relatives, but one person who was at the scene last night, has told others that she was bleeding, but conscious.
