Four-car accident on Hwy 12

CHP has released a report of the traffic accident that occurred at 10:30 AM on December 10, 2013 on Hwy 12 at Southworth Road in Valley Springs.

According to CHP, Shirley Holligan (70) of San Andreas,
was driving a 2004 Chrysler westbound on Hwy 12 approaching Southworth Road at approximately 55 MPH.

Teri Ballew (68) of Wallace was driving a 2008 Chevrolet westbound on Hwy 12 at Southworth Road and was stopped in the lane, prepareing to make a left turn onto Southworth Road.

Kathleen Hearn (43) of Sutter Creek was driving a 1996 Toyota eastbound on Hwy 12 approaching Southworth Road at 55 MPH.

Craig Biles (52) of Wallace was driving  a 2008 Ford northbound on Southworth Road and stopped at the intersection of Southworth Road and Hwy 12.

For an unknown reason Holligan did not realize that the Chevrolet driven by Ballew was stopped in the westbound lane preparing to make a left turn.

Holligan allowed the front of the Chrysler to collide with the right rear of Ballews Chevrolet.

The force of this collision pushed the Chevrolet into the eastbound lane of Hwy 12, directly into the path of Hearn's Toyota.

The front of the Chevrolet collided head-on with the front of the Toyota. The force of that collision caused the Chrysler to collide with the front of Biles' Ford. The Chrysler, the Chevrolet and the Toyota became disabled in the traffic lanes, blocking Hwy 12 in both directions.

The drivers o of the Chrysler and the Toyota became trapped in their vehicles and had to be extricated by Jenny Lind Fire Department.

Holligan, Ballew and Hearn were transported by American Legion Ambulance to Mark Twain Medical Center for treatment of their injuries.

Holligan and Hearn were later transported by Air Ambulance to Doctors Hospital in Modesto for further treatment.

Holligan and Ballew were treated for minor injuries.  Hearn was treated for major injuries.

This collision is still under investigation, however drugs and alcohol are not considered to be a factor in this collision.
