Fatal Accident on Hwy 4

According to CHP, on November 20, 2014 at approximately 4:15 PM an 18 year old Copperopolis resident was traveling eastbound on Hwy 4 east of Stallion Way at an unknown speed in a 2006 Dodge Stratus.

Michael L. Darby (52) of Angels Camp was traveling westbound on Hwy 4 east of Stallion at a stated speed of 40-45 MPH.

For an unknown reason, the currently unnamed driver  lost control of his vehicle and it rotated sideways into the oncoming lane of traffic, directly into the path of Mr. Darby, who was driving a 2003 Buick Park Avenue.

The front of the Buick collided with the right side of the Dodge. Both vehicles came to rest blocking the westbound lane of Hwy 4.

The driver of the Dodge sustained fatal injuries as a result of the collision.  The Calaveras County Coronor's Office was called to help identify the driver and notify the family before his name is released to the public..

Mr. Darby sustained major injuries and was transported by ambulance to Mark Twain Medical Center. His passenger Linda C. Darby (55) also sustained major injuries and was transported by life flight to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto.

At this time CHP says there is no indication that drugs or alcohol were a factor in this accident.  The pavement was wet and it was raining at the time of the collision.
