Prop 10 -- The Tobacco Tax - Teeth, Chaw, Strokes!

Proposition 10 of 1998 narrowly passed allowing the taxes on all tobacco products to go to early childhood development and smoking prevention programs.

At that time the legislature gave the money to the First 5 organizations that had been created in the state at the local levels.

Although this approval was money to go to a children's dental treatment program, it said nothing about teaching the children to stay away from tobacco. Perhaps the law is very broad, and allows First 5 to spend the money on anything for children.

Also, it was pointed out by a member of the audience, that the filthy habit of chewing destroys
peoples teeth and it starts in childhood.

A recent television commercial shows that 1 in 3 strokes are caused by tobacco products people chose to use,(showed a photo of a bedridden woman) and the taxpayers end up paying for these people for the rest of their lives.

Therefore, early education about the dangers of tobacco are valuable.
