Calaveras Sheriff report on Bechtold arrest--TIED TO A POLE???

On April 3, 2020 at around 4:30 PM, the county sheriff, along with the CHP were dispatched to the intersection of Nall Street and Westhill Road in Valley Springs for a vehicle
accident involving a pedestrian.

When deputies arrived, they learned that 29 year old Thomas Bechtold was involved in a verbal argument with 47 year old James Leslie.

Bechtold apparently got into his vehicle and struck Leslie with it, knocking him unconscious before fleeing the area.

The Calaveras Sheriff conducted an investigation and began seeking Bechtold in connection with the incident.

At around 7:30 PM, the Sheriff's Office received a report that Bechtold had been dropped off near the same intersection.

When officers arrived, they found Bechtold battered, with his hands tied behind his back and tethered to a telephone pole.

He was arrested and booked into the Calaveras County Jail where he is being held on $2,195,000 bail for charges of alleged attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, battery with serious injury and felony hit and run.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Sheriff's Office at 754-6030 anonymously.
