At 9:30 AM on March 4, 2026 a ZOOM meeing was held by EPPOC (Ebbetts Pass Property Owners Council), regarding the disaster
of the latest storm and the county.Unfamiliar with EPPOC, we joined the ZOOM, where a gentleman announced the meeting and then turned it over to Sheriff Whiting.
Problem # 1: The Sheriff reported that the Office of Emergency Services had resigned in December (that's 5 in 8 years) and that the Board voted to turn it all over to the Sheriff's Office.
It was clear that although the Sheriff felt badly, her department was definitely not ready for any type of emergency, but did their best to help people.
Problem # 2: During an emergency such as our storm, traffic should have been kept from driving past Avery during the storm, alleviating all the no chain congestion and people pully off everywhere, blocking local traffic, plows, etc.
Public Works was next (what a joke!). A woman named Monica and two men kept making excuses for all the complaints and were reportedly not taking seriously requests for help with plowing.
Problem # 3: Complaints were lodged that most streets were NOT plowed for days. No coordination, no GPS tracking the plow trucks, and when it started snowing in Murphys, they all pull off Arnold and headed for the lower elevations. Is that where the Supervisors votes are?
When Caltrans plows they spend their time in the highest elevations where its needed most. Poor decision making at Public Works?
There were no loaders, snowcats, large snow blowers or enough plows to handle the volume and they started way too late in removal.
Problem # 4: Power was out for 10 days in most places in Ebbetts Pass. No phones, no cells, no internet and no TV for communications with county.
Finally, 5 years ago, after the last snow catastrophe, the BOS promised to revamp, reorganize and plan for any future emergency situations. THAT DID NOT HAPPEN!
Istead, they kept appointing a new OES Director every time one resigned and HERE WE ARE! Like Chief Johnson of the EPFD said, fortunately no one died this time.
Supervisor Huberty acted like he knew nothing about past plans but that he would hold a town hall meeting to again discuss the problems.
Martin Huberty, District 3 Supervisor needs to move to Arnold so that he knows what its really like during a storm.
All these meetings do NOTHING. EPPOC has absolutely no power! What District 3 needs is good leadership!!
