Openly gay and of Japanese heritage, Mark Takano was elected to be Riverside County's representative in Congress on November 6, 2012.
Some very interesting facts came out as a result of his candidacy. He will follow a list of other well-known Californians with a Japanese internment camp history.
Norman Mineta and Robert Matsui both spent their childhoods in internment camps during WWII and Doris Matsui was born in an internment camp.
Takano becomes the first elected to Congress to be born after WWII, who's parents had been interred.
He has been a teacher in Riverside School District for 23 years and still sits on the School District Board.
This combined makes Takano the very first openly LGBT Japanese congressman. We wish him well!
