Letter from Representative Ami Bera

October 21, 2013:  As you know, last week the government shutdown ended after partisan bickering and political games impacted thousands of people across our country.

This is why people say Congress is broken.  Political points should never take priority over the lives of our constituents, yet these past weeks have been an example of what happens when a few people in Congress lose sight of why they were elected - to serve the people.

My focus in Congress is serving the people of California by creating a real budget that not only deals with our debt and deficit, but also helps strengthen vital programs such as Social Security and Medicare.

I remain committed to working across the aisle to ensure that our government works efficiently.

I made a pledge that I would work to make Congress a place of service.  I have that pledge in mind each day, and I will continue to find opportunities to build dialogue and advocate on your behalf.

   Ami Bera, MD
