What are Free Speech rights? What is "Civility"?

The Sierra Sentinel remembers when Calaveras Superintendent of Schools Kathy Northington first came to the Calaveras Board of Supervisors podium and announced the new program of "civility"
when speaking to elected or authoritative officials.

There were many who didn't get it; didn't realize that this was an attempt to curb free speech in Calaveras County, even among children. They thought it was a good idea!

Brainwashing them into believing they can only be nice and say things that are positive and in agreement with authority.

We were shocked! In a free society for a liberal Democrat to force children to speak in a certain way, that the official won't be offended?

They began spreading this new "law" all over the county and were even putting up posters in children's classrooms.

This is essentially telling children that they should no longer protest, to grow up agreeing with whatever the elected officials say, no matter what they believed may be true.

This isn't the way our country was founded. In fact, it was founded on protest and civil disobedience and our constitution is supposed to protect our rights, even to take up arms.

The City of Angels Camp is now reconsidering it's "civility" in public speaking rules. They have  used these rules to prevent anyone from speaking out against their rulings, policies or individual councilmembers, and have even forcibly removed speakers they didn't agree with.

We recently learned that at some schools, they are being brainwashed to hear only what certain elected officials want them to learn about land use.  Hard to believe, but true.

Now, what is someone from a less extreme viewpoint wants to get equal time with these same students. Will it be allowed? We doubt it!

In Santa Cruz, a member of the public gave the Nazi salute when he was told he had to stop talking. He was forcibly removed.

Are we becoming a Nazi state, where only the "state" is allowed to speak and you are not to argue?
