In March of this year, the US Postmaster General and CEO of the USPS gave testimoney before a House of Representatives Committee on the financial status of the USPS.Reading through his testimony, CEO Patrick R. Donohoe stated that the USPS is near its limit of $15 billion in debt and that if it was a private company it would be filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
He made all kinds of statements regarding ideas he had to have them handle their own medical insurance coverage, etc., etc.
That was in March and now it is August 2012 and they are even more in debt. Basically, nothing has been done by the USPS to stop the bleeding, and the American public is using the USPS less and less. Stamps will more than likely be $ 1 or more each before long!
They are not modernizing enough. They have not cut back enough on the workforce. They are simply going on as if nothing has happened and they expect the government to bail them out.
If you use Calaveras County as an example, you will see probably twice the number of postal workers in any post office as is needed at any given time.
These workers are so used to just skimming along and planning their good retirements, that they just don't get it.
Why doesn't the USPS file for bankruptcy? That would make it possible to get the union pay and benefits more in line with the real world.
Something has to give. In the meantime, we recommend everyone avoid spending their money at a post office if they can help it. Use e-mail, and fax to send and receive. And UPS or FedEx are so pleasant, fast and thorough for sending packages.
And someone needs to do something about the treatment many of their "customers" receive. Oh, the horror stories we have heard
Yes, we are their CUSTOMERS, and if the person at the counter is in a good mood, you may be treated nicely, but if not, look out!
Most people tell us that the clerks are less than interested in helping them, will be visiting with a friend while you wait, etc. There are no rules. They live in a dream world.
They will more than likely have to learn the hard way that you need to work for a living, not skate through life ending up with a nice pension. How sad. The Post Office used to be a respectable institution. Now many wish they would contract it ALL out.
