According to the CHP report, on June 7, 2015 at approximately 12:05 PM, a 69 year old male from Modesto was driving a 2007 Chevy 4 door sedan westbound on Hwy 108, east of Little Sweden
with a 70 year old female passenger from Salida.
For an unknown reason the driver allowed the vehicle to drift off the right road edge and onto the dirt shoulder.
He over-corrected back to the left, traveled out of control across the eastbound lane and went off the left road edge, traveling about 200' down a steep embankment.
The collision was witnessed by firefighting personnel that were stopped at a nearby vista point and they responded immediately.
After requesting additional resources, they began life-saving measures, but the driver and his passenger both succumbed to their injuries.
Identification of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
