On Monday January 22, 2024 around 7 PM, a press release was received from the Calaveras Sheriff regarding a man firing
a weapon at deputies.On January 19, 2024 a search warrant was conducted at the residence of Michael Powell (40), regarding possession of prohibited firearms and the unsafe discharge of firearms.
Efforts to communicate with Powell by officers in a perimeter around the residence, were unsuccessful and Powell allegedly fired several rounds from inside the residence toward deputies.
Crisis negotiation failed and chemical agents were fired into the home around 5 PM. Powell then exited the residence and fired toward officers.
Deputies fired back and at least one round struck Powell. He was treated by an ambulance and then taken to an out of area hospital.
The Sheriff emphasizes that they are investigating and they are committed to transparency, saying they will provide additional details as they become available.
