California Ballot Proposition #30

  Temporary Taxes:

This is the temporary tax to fund education and public safety initiative amendment.

It increases taxes on earnings over $250,000 for seven years

It increases sales tax for everyone in California to 7.50% for four years, up .25%.

If it passes, they say that spending reductions to education programs will not occur in 2012-13.

  Our recommendation:

NO -- Reason:  Although the increase to large income earners doesn't affect most voters, the sales tax increase does.

We feel they threw the sales tax increase in with this tax on the wealthy increase because they think no one will notice.

NO ON ANY NEW TAXES!  Most of this money will go to give union members raises, and this is not the time to do that. Fiscal discipline is not the Labor Unions' strong suit.

Labor, business and government need to work together to get California back on strong fiscal footing.
