Sheldon Bissell killed in car crash

Mountain Ranch resident and the creator of the DUI bounty program, died this morning in an automobile accident in Mountain Ranch.

Mr. Bissell was famous for the years of work he did in trying to get drunk drivers off the road, even using his own money to pay bounty for anyone who turned in a drunk driver.

This program is now part of the Sheriff's Office.

On December 16, 2013, according to CHP, around 7:17 AM Mr. Bissell (77) was driving his 2001 Honda Civic northbound on Coachman Way and stopped at the intersection with Mountain Ranch Road.

Samuel J. Hoffman (22) of Valley Springs was driving a 1997 Dodge Ram 2500 eastbound on Mountain Ranch Road approaching Coachman Way at a stated speed of approximately 55-69 MPH.

As the Dodge approached, Mr. Bissell made a left turn onto Mountain Ranch Road, directly into the path of the Dodge.

According to CHP Mr. Hoffman hit his brakes and swerved to the left, but was unable to stop in time to avoid a collision.

The right front of the Dodge collided with the left front door of the Honda.  After the collision, both vehicles remained n the roadway, blocking Mountain Ranch Road in both directions.

Mr. Bissell sustained fatal injuries as a result of this collision.. Mr. Hoffman did not sustain any injuries.

This collision is still under investigation, however, drugs and alcohol are not considered a factor in this collision.

Omg, I remember him. He used to try and convince everyone to support his cause. So sorry!

that is so sad. Wasn't one of his children killed in a crash with a drunk driver that got him started in his campaign to stop them?

I remember Supervisor Tryon being against it, calling it a bounty on his drunk friends. I think its a good thing.
