Calaveras County Sheriff and Letter About Wedding

The Sierra Sentinel feels we need to explain the letter we printed about Walk Down Aisle. You see, another publication,
which shall remain nameless, is trying to smear our Sheriff, and in attempting to do that, they are trying to grab at anything, even a family wedding.

We agree with the writer, that this was a wonderful, kind and thoughtful thing to do. Since their father had passed away, the sister of the young man wished to have her brother walk her down the aisle at her wedding.

Nothing unusual, except that the brother was being held in the County Jail on growing marijuana. What an overwhelmingly sweet thing for the Sheriff to do; to allow him to walk down the aisle and then return him to his jail cell.

It seems to us that this is something Steve Wilensky would approve of as a liberal who wants to help inmates hope for their lives to be better.

What some elected officials will do to make it a political football, is nearly unbelievable; except that this is Calaveras County. And, desperate for front page stories, they lunged after it!! Sickening!

Does Ballard intend to run for Sheriff again? Is that why this is being done? More than likely? What other elected official was supporting Ballard? Hmmmm......

If there was any real story to this it should have been to thank the Sheriff for having a heart.

What? Did this guy make a run for it and escape? No.
Why don't we worry about the 10,000 felons running around on parole at large, many of them sex offenders. Does that publication care about that at all? Probably not!

I think our Sheriff is a better man because he allowed the wedding.

I've only lived here for 1.5 years full time. I have hard nothing but bad comments regarding Ms. Calloway. I didn't vote her into office but obviously the majority did. (no electoral college here I guess). I have heard some of her comments and personally experienced her taking credit for something she did nothing more than agree with a majority vote on a consent agenda item at the sups meeting. That alone means she doesn't get my or wife's vote at next election if she runs, but bottom line-SOMEONE needs to step up and oppose her. Just for the negative comments I've read or heard about regarding her actions-there should be enough votes for the "other guy" to vote her out. Unless its the same five people bitching about her !!! USe what's available to us-recall her or vote her out at next election if she runs. Hope the alternative is "better"

Assuming that ALL of the inmates have the same opportunity then I guess it is just fine. But then again, what happens when she has a baby.....does he get to go the baptism. What about his other sisters wedding? Truth is jail is a punishment and you should not get our for any reason other then the funeral of a direct family member. What next......bar mitzvahs??
