Letter to the Editor: A little Turkey Trivia

   Dear Sierra Sentinel:

I have to tell you that while my husband was getting ready to go to work, I heard one of the news people talking about the annual turkey presentation today at the White House, who asked the viewers a trivia question:

"Who was the first President to officially pardon the turkeys presented to the President of the United States?"

Well, I asked my husband who he thought it was. Being the a smart alec who also loves politics, he quickly said " I think it was Nixon. Then they were the ones who pardoned him later."

While funny, it wasn't correct.  The answer was. President Kennedy began the tradition of officially pardoning the turkeys at the White House.

However, it was Lincoln who is actually credited as being the first President, as after someone gave his family a Thanksgiving turkey, his son so fell in love with it, that Linclon could not bring himself to have it killed.

   Just a little turkey nonsense.
