According to CHP on January 6, 2014 at around 8:45 PM Louis Schmitz (73) of Valley Springs, was driving a white Lincoln Navigator on Hwy 49 northbound, north of Cosgrave Road in the City of Angels area at an unknown speed.
A large tree limb had fallen across both lanes of traffic prior to Mr. Schmitz arriving at the location. As he approached the tree limb he was unable to stop in time and he collided with the tree limb.
The vehicle sustained major front end damage and Mr. Schmitz suffered major injuries. He was airlifted to Modesto Memorial Hospital.
Alcohol is not a factor in this collision. It is still under investigation.
