Letter from George Runner at BOE

This is the letter of response we received via email from George Runner, our elected representative to the California Board of Equalization, omitting personal references:

"Thank you for alerting me to your concerns about the State Board of Equalization's (BOE) staff visits to your place of business in...  "(a town in Calaveras County).

As your elected taxpayer advocate, I understand the concern and frustration these visits can cause for business owners....

I often remind BOE staff to think about how they would feel if the IRS, for example, knocked on their door and said they're 'here to help.'

The Statewide Compliance and Outreach Program was established several years ago to promote voluntary compliance."

It is my goal for this program to proactively help taxpayers avoid tax traps and inadvertent mistakes that would result in costly and time-consuming audits down the road.

California taxes are complex and these visits are designed to help, not harass, the very people who make our state great.

We always expect BOE staff to be courteous and professional when interacting with taxpayers.

As a result of your complaint, please know that we immediately recalled the team conducting the visits and are thoroughly investigating their conduct.

Again, thank you for bringing this matter to my attention. Please encourage any other taxpayers who have concerns to contact my office at 916-445-2181.

   Sincerely,
   GEORGE RUNNER
