Christopher Columbus As the country becomes more Educated

What happened in Seattle and is happening around the country is not a rebuke of Italians. It's evidence of higher education among all cultures.

Columbus Day, to the now elderly, was considered in the old days to be an honoring of Italian Americans.

But, as the generations become educated to the fact that Columbus is NOT who we thought he was, nor did he even know WHERE he was, changes have taken place in the hearts of Italians.

Native American Day would be more appropriate to celebrate. We heard that some people were so afraid they would lose a day off with pay, that they wanted to keep it. Now, that's funny!

You are talking 522 years ago. It took an Italian with great courage and foresight to make this trip, this adventure into the unknown (at least to the Euro's).
They didn't have political correctness, they didn't even know what a native was.
The Euro's thought of themselves as superior. That wasn't just on a whim. It was their society. Their culture. They knew no different.
As we look back and see what became of the natives, wrongs are being identified and addressed. But you cannot take away what these men experienced for the first time.
Exploring.
And the Italian courageous enough to lead them.

When more info comes down about people that wasn't known before, names of bridges, schools, etc. are changed. This is NOT a unique idea. I think Native American Day is perfect.
