On February 27, 2017 around 10 PM Bernice Winge (58) of Valley Springs was driving a 2000 Ford on South Petersburg Drive in Valley Springs, with a passenger Lee Phelps (65) of Valley Springs near North Shore Court, when Winge needed to make a U-turn.
The reverse gear reportedly was not functioning (a previously known issue) and Phelps got out of the vehicle to push it backwards.
Winge put the vehicle in neutral and got out to help Phelps push. For unknown reasons the Ford popped into drive, running Phelps over, and then collided into a cable fence and a tree.
Phelps was life flighted to Modesto Memorial for treatment of Major injuries. Drugs and or alcohols were apparently not a factor in this collision.
