Vehicle lands upside down in river

According to CHP on July 3, 2014 Janelle Lewis (18) of Valley Springs was traveling north on Hogan Dam Road in a 1993 Grand Cherokee.

As she approached the Calaveras River Bridge at an unknown speed, Lewis was unable to negotiate a curve to her right, lost control of the Cherokee.

The Cherokee ran off the west side of the road at the south bridge abutment and went over a 20' concrete wall, landing upside down in the Calaveras River.

Although there was approximately three feet of water in the river, Lewis was able to get herself out of the Cherokee, but required assistance from the Calaveras County Sheriff's Department Search and Rescue Dive Team to get out of the river.

Lewis was then transported to UC Davis Medical Center for treatment of major injuries.

Assistance from Calaveras Consolidated Fire Protection District, Cal Fire, and Clements Fire Department also assisted in Lewis' rescue.

Did the car leak oil, fuel or other contaminants into the river?
