Robert "Bob" DeVoss of San Andreas

Robert "Bob" Vergne DeVoss passed away suddenly in his beloved garden of natural causes at his home in San Andreas on Saturday May 30, 2015 at the age of 76.

He was born in Stockton on September 4, 2015, but was a longtime resident of San Andreas.

Bob, or Bobby as his family referred to him, graduated from Calaveras High School in 1957, where he was a successful athlete, lettering in Basketball, Baseball, Boxing and Track and Field.

He met and married his first wife, Judy Nighsonger and had 4 daughters; Darlene, Alta, Trudi and Patsy (Patrice) DeVoss.

Bobby worked for Blagen Lumber for a few years and went to work for the Calaveras Cement Plant as a welding mechanic and pipe fitter until it closed.

As a young man he had a 1958 Chevy and was very proud of it with all the glass packs and bragged about how he beat all the competition.

Having four daughters Bobby was naturally a coach for the girls local 'Pony Tail Softball League' and coached and cared for many of the girls on the team, treating them like his own kids and just so
proud of each and every one of them.

He continued to reminisce, laugh and tell stories of all the games and players with exact detail and a smile on his face. His old players still call him Coach to this day.

Kids, family and friends could often be found at the DeVoss house hanging out and swimming in the pool.  He loved to cook Chicken-in-the-barrel and dedicated a lot of his time to the community.

.Bobby had also lived in Santa Rosa for a few years before returning to San Andreas to retire.

He met his soulmate, best friend, and love of his life Hazel Einarsson in 2008 while playing cards at the Senior Center.

Later he finally nervously asked her out on a date and married her on August 20, 2011 at the beautiful home in the country in San Andreas.

Bobby loved to play cards and tell tall tales.  He was a joking and happy guy everyone always laughed and had a great time around him.

Bobby could always be found in his garden and was renowned for his green thumb and immaculate garden.

He loved fishing, hunting, camping, telling stories, family, watching his grandson play professional baseball, playing with his great-grand children, and just hanging out with his wife Hazel on the patio and the ranch.

He is also a longtime SF 49er fan and lifelong LA Dodgers fan.  He would say the he bled blue.

Bobby is survived by his wife Hazel Einarsson of San Andreas, daughters Darline DeVoss-Yost of San Andreas, Alta (DeVoss) and husband Michael Smith of Janesville, Trudi DeVoss of Willows and Patrice DeVoss of Willows, step-children John Statahopoulos of Redwood City and Julie Bruckopoulos of Healdsburg.

He also leaves grandchildren Mitch Lively of Susanville, Matthew Lively of Susanville, Steven Lively of Susanville, Andrew Colvin of Visalia, Marissa Henning of Fertile Iowa, Elaina DeVoss of Los Angeles and Nick Statahopoulos of Redwood City, great-grandchildren CJ Henning of Fertile Iowa, Harlow Lively of Susanville and Evangeline (Evie) Lively of Susanville.

His brothers and sisters are Patsy Phelps of Stockton and Kit DeVoss of Lodi and cousins that are like sisters and brothers Kathleen Walsh of Arnold, Gordon Johnson, Mackey Id and his son Hanz Knoepsle & Vernagae Lee of Angels Camp.

He was preceded in death by his father Gerald Ray DeVoss, mother Berta Margart (Woods) DeVoss, brother Timothe Paul DeVoss, cousin Gail Smith and her son Eddie Mello, as well as his beloved Grandma Brown and many other family members who were close and loved.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday June 6, 2015 at 2 PM at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS/Mormon Church) on 221 Church Hill Road in San Andreas and a luncheon for the family members afterwards.
