DUI caused collision per CHP

According to CHP on October 19, 2016 at approximately 8:55 AM Leigh Darrell (32) of Murphys was driving a Jeep northbound on Hwy 49 near Cosgrave Road just outside Angels Camp at an unknown speed.

Thomas Robinson (59) of Galt was driving a Peterbilt big rig southbound on Hwy 49 at approximately 40 MPH.

Darrell, per CHP, due to her intoxicated state, allowed the Jeep to travel to the right and off the paved portion of the roadway, then overcorrected back to the left and lost control of the vehicle.

She then traveled across both traffic lanes and off the west side of the roadway, stuck a steep embankment with an ascending grade, re-entered the southbound traffic lane and overturned.

Robinson observed the Jeep overturning and applied his brakes forcefully. The Jeep then struck the Peterbilt.

After the collision the Jeep came to rest on its right side facing west, blocking the southbound traffic lane.

The Peterbilt came to rest on its wheels facing in a southerly direction, blocking the southbound traffic lane.

Darrell received minor injuries but was not taken to a hospital, but was arrested by CHP for alleged DUI.
