According to a CHP report on October 27, 2016 at approximately 3:10 PM Christopher Dunivant (29) of Angels Camp was driving at 1994 Chrysler eastbound on Murphys Grade Road just east of
Fairview Park Court, outside Angels Camp.
Charles Gates (73) of Sonora was driving a 2016 Nissan westbound on Murphys Grade Road, east of Fairview Park Court.
For unknown reasons Dunivant lost control of his vehicle and allowed it to cross over the double parallel yellow lines separating the eastbound and westbound lanes.
Dunivant's vehicle entered into the westbound lane directly in the path of Gates' vehicle. Gates applied his brakes but was unable to slow or stop before the front of his vehicle struck the right hand side of Dunivant's vehicle.
Despite the efforts of emergency personnel, Dunivant and a passenger in the Nissan, Ellen Carlsen (79) of Sonora were pronounced deceased at the scene.
Charles Gates, Judith Gates (73) of Sonora and Randy Gates (53) of Plano, Texas, also passengers in the Nissan, were taken to Sonora Regional Medical Center with moderate injuries.
