Hwy 4: Loose Trailer Causes Head On Traffic Collision in Copperopolis

   Around 11 AM on October 27, 2012 CHP received a report that a Rodney R. Hillman, 64 of Milpitas was driving a 2002 Dodge Pickup  with a towed trailer on Hwy 4 westbound at a stated speed of 55 MPH.

   Michael P. Slattery, 57 of Copperopolis was driving a 1004 Buick Century on Hwy 4 eastbound at a stated speed on 55 MPH.

   As both behicles approached each other from opposite directions, the pickup's trailer became detached, and the trailer then veered to the wouth crossing into the eastbound lane.

   Slattery observed the trailer approaching, but had no time to react. The trailer then collided head-on into Slattery's Buick in the eastbound lane.

   After the impact, the trailer came to rest partially blocking the eastbound lane and the pickup driven by Hillman came to rest completely blocking the eastbound lane.

   Slattery was transported to Sonora Regional Medical Center with minor injuries. No charges have been filed at this point.

I would have been nice if the safety chain was attached and the landing gear wheel retracted.
