Maurice "Maury" Rager of Valley Springs

   Maurice "Maury" Rager died peacefully on June 2, 2015  at his Valley Springs home with his family by his side. He was 85.

   Born in Modesto on September 6, 1929, Mr. Rager was raised in Waterford, attended Waterford Grammar School,
Oakdale High School and the University of California at Berkeley, where he received a BS in Mechanical Engineering and a ROTC Commission of 2nd Lt. in the Army Corps of Engineers in 1952.

   He served 2 years active duty at Fort Lewis, Washington and was discharged as Company Commander of the 761st Engineer Light Equipment Company.

     He was employed in 1952 by PG&E and worked in various Plant Engineering positions in the Steam Power Plants of the Steam Generations Department.

   During his last 27 years of employment he was the Plant Engineer at the Moss Landing Power Plant, Supervisor of Operation and Maintenance in the Southern Region of the of the Steam Generation Department and retired as Assistant Plant Manager at the Moss Landing Power  Plant in 1987.

   During his life he volunteered and served with various community organizations.  As a teenager he enjoyed his time with the Waterford Boy Scout Troop 145.

   He was active in the Morro Bay Lions Club; the Morrow Bay Sea Scout Committee as the San Luis Obispo County Engineering Explorer Post 334 Advisor; the Monterey County Service Area 46 Advisory Committee; Mid Coast Health Systems Agency - Health Promotion and Protection Sub-Committee; Salinas Chamber of Commerce Community Health Committee (2 year Health Fair Chairman) and on the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Reserve Advisory committee.

   After retirement from PG&E he moved to Valley Springs and became active with the local Gold Country Chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI Gold County), where he served as President for 3 years.

   He served as a member and Chairman of the Calaveras County Mental Health Board.

   Maury was also a member of the American Legion Post 102 of Valley Springs, was a Life Member of the NRA and the CA Pistol and Rifle Association and an Annual Member of the American Gunsmith Association.

   Maury was preceded in death by his father Maurice Rager, mother Helen Nesbitt, step-mother Louise Rager and sister Mary Conrad.

   Maury is survived by his wife Pat (Fischer) of 62 years. Maury met Pat while attending UC Berkeley. Mary was a flatlander from Waterford and Pat was a hillbilly from Mokelumne Hill.   They were married in 1952 after he went on active duty in the Army.

   He is also survived by daughters Maureen Rager-McKinnon (John) of Spokane, Washington, Terri Rager of Mokelumne Hill, Jennifer Madariaga (David) of Los Angeles and son Martin Rager of San Andreas; grandchildren Jack McKinnon (Joanne), on active duty as an officer in the Marines, Danny McKinnon of Spokane, Washington, Ryan Madariaga of Los Angeles and Bridgit Madariaga of Los Angeles; sister Pat Grieve (Keith) of Modesto, Washington and many beloved nieces and nephews.

   Services will be held at 10 AM on Monday June 8, 2015 at St. Thomas Aquinas in Mokelumne Hill.

   Memorial Contributions would be appreciated for NAMI Gold Country, American Legion Post 102 of Valley Springs or Hospice of Amador and Calaveras Counties.

   San Andreas Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
