Calaveras Sheriff Press release

    According to the Calaveras Sheriff's Office, on June 24, 2018 at approximately 6:45 PM they received a report of an armed robbery that occurred just outside of Murphys.

   The caller reported being robbed at gunpoint by multiple black and 'middle eastrn' males and that multiple vehicles were involved in the robbery. 

   The victims reported that cash, marijuana an automobile (white van) and expensive personal property were taken during the robbery.

   The Calaveras Sheriff's Office put out a "Be on the Lookout" broadcast for the suspects and vehicles over the radio system.

  A Calaveras deputy patrolling the Valley Springs area located a group of vehicles matching the description traveling westbound on Hwy 12 near Double Springs.

   The deputy made a traffic stop on a suspect vehicle which was a black Range Rover. The vehicle took off and a pursuit began. A CHP officer joined in the pursuit, which continue westbound on Hwy 12 near Double Springs Road.

   During the pursuit for an unknown reason on occupant, an unknown black male adult, exited the vehicle while it was still travelling at a high rate of speed.

   The vehicle continue off of Hwy 12 where it collide with some small trees and a fence.  Two additional black male suspects took off running from the vehicle after it stopped.

   Both medics and fire were called to the scene due to the severe injuries located on the first subject who initially exited the vehicle while it was travelling at a high rate of speed.

   This first black male subject was pronounced deceased at the scene, cause of death to be detrmined by an autopsy.

   Evidence of the robbery was located near the subject's body on the side of the highway.  The Sheriff's Office, CHP and the Angels Camp Police Department set up a perimeter and an ACPD K-9 was called to the scene to locate the two additional black males that had fled on foot.

   During this time additional Sheriff's Deputies wre responding to the scene and located the white van (that had been taken from the robbery victims) travelling in front of the suspect's black Range Rover.

   Deputies stopped the white van tying these subjects to the robbery.  Deputies and ACPD K-9 partner "Thor" searched an area covered with brush near where the pursuit had terminated and Thor located the two suspects. They were then apprehended as the two who had fled from the Range Rover.

   Sheriff's Detectives and a Crime Scene Specialist were called to multiple sites in Murphys, San Andreas (MTH) and Valley Springs.

   The CHP MAIT Team also responded to the Hwy 12 scene near Valley Springs.  Investigators worked multiple scenes throughout the night.

   At the time of this press release, four subjects were arrested and booked into the Calaveras County Jail, exact charges and bail pending completion of the booking process. Two were from Illinois and two were from other areas of California.

   Per Calaveras Sheriff's Office, two suspects are still outstanding, described as speaking a foreign language during the robbery. They were originally described as 'middle eastern' males and wer possibly speaking Armenian during the robbery.

   One robbery victim was transported to Mark Twain Hospital in San Andreas with severe injuries and was later transported to a hospital outside of the area.

   There were six victims in this case, who were reportedly bound, threatened and in some cases individual victims were beaten and tortured with a taser and received death threats.

   The suspects were booked on multiple charges of alleged armed robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robberies, assault with a deadly weapon, felony battery with great bodily injury, kidnapping, false imprisonment and torture.

   Due to the death of one of the subjects, the Sheriff's Office will be reviewing potential homicide charges with the District Attorney.
