On July 14, 2015 at approximately 10:45 PM officers from the Angels Camp Police Department were on foot in the area of Mark Twain Road and S. Main Street on an unrelated call, when they heard a single but distinct gunshot in the area.
Further investigation lead officers to the 700 block of Mark Twain Road where officers spoke with numerous residents who were outside, one of which provided a possible location of the shooter.
Officers spoke with 48 year old Angels Camp resident Bret Smith, who eventually admitted that he exited his residence with a 12 gauge shotgun and fired a single round into the air, then walked back inside his residence.
Based on the close proximity of other residents in the area, Smith was arrested for alleged 245.3 (a) PC, Negligent Discharge of a Firearm and booked into the Calaveras County Jail.
