Driver sought in Hit and Run Collision on Hwy 26

On May 4, 2016 around 3 PM an unknown driver was driving a 1978 Chevy in the eastbound traffic lane of Hwy 26 in West Point at an unknown speed.

Mark Stebbins (73) of Stockton was driving a 2001 Ford and was stopped on private property preparing to turn left onto westbound Hwy 26.

After checking both directions when in was clear Mr. Stebbins proceeded to turn left onto Hwy 26 and established the right of way.

The unknown driver observed the Ford entering Hwy 26 and applied his brakes forcefully, lost traction and began to slide to the left into the westbound traffic lane.

The Chevy then struck the Ford. After the collision, the unknown driver fled on foot.

The Chevy came to rest on its wheels facing in a north-easterly direction, partially blocking the westbound traffic lane.  The Ford came to rest on its wheels facing in a northerly direction off the roadway.

Mr. Stebbins was taken to Sutter Amador Hospital with minor injuries. The crash is still under investigation as CHP is searching for the felony hit and run driver.
