Raymond Carl Schelegle of Angels Camp

   Raymond Carl Schelegle, born September 24, 1921 in Tacoma, Washington, died peacefully with his daughter present on April 26, 2016 at
Foothill Village in Angels Camp.

   He had lived a full life that was accentuated by a strong work ethic and dedication to community service.

   Ray was happily married for 64 years to the love of his life, Martha Bogdanoff, who passed away in November of 2006.

   Martha was his blind date for the 1942 4th of July celebration in San Francisco, where he was in port.

   They were married in Tacoma, Washington that year on November 18. they had 4 children, many travels and a wonderful life together.

   Ray is survived by 3 of his 4 children, 7 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

   Ray enlisted in the US Navy at the age of 19.  He conducted multiple floats aboard the USS Idaho from 1940 to 1942 in the North Atlantic and later in the North Pacific.

  He also served in the Submarine Division on the USS Tambor and the USS Piranha in the South Pacific from 1943 until he was honorably discharged on April 15, 1946.

   Following his time in the Navy, Ray became a carpenter and later a Construction Superintendent until he retired at age 63.

   He oversaw construction and restoration of many notable Bay Area buildings and structures.   He was proud of and meticulous in his work.

   He was a member in good standing of the San Francisco Carpenter's and Joiner's Union 22 for over 65 years.

     Ray enjoyed using his carpentry skills to serve his friends and community.  Ray was an active member of the Methodist Church in South San Francisco for over 35 years.

   He served as member of the trustees and designed and built the church's new fellowship hall.

   More recently, as a member of the Union Congregational Church in Angels Camp, Ray oversaw the project to replace the foundation of the main church building.

   Ray worked with the playground committee to help design and build the Murphys playground.

   Ray also shared his love of cooking by serving pancake breakfast and dinner specialties for his church and other community charities.

   Services will be held at 11 AM on May 7, 2016 at Angels Memorial Chapel at 1071 South Main Street in Angels Camp.

   The family askes in lieu of flowers donations are warmly welcomed to:  Hospice of Calaveras and Amador County in Jackson, Habitat for Humanity Calaveras or The Resource Connection in San Andreas.

   Angels Memorial Chapel is handling arrangements.
