Letter to the Editor...About Events

Dear Editor;
   Many residents in Copper are mad at a local resort because they think they are doing something wrong......but the county has allowed it...given tacit approval by entering into a contract with the Sheriff for law enforcement.

    You should know that neither the Supervisor, nor anyone else at the County has made any law
prohibiting events, manly because it could affect certain friends in their districts who they want to leave along.

    Perhaps, if the residents go to the  BOS and protest, they will make one, but don't count on it. Look at their record lately. Cruelty to Animals is a good thing, the Grand Jury is BAD! for criticizing them, and it goes on and on.
   A Conditional Use Permit (CUP)  is actually a "zoning instrument" used by a government entity to review location, site development and/or conduct of certain land uses. These are uses which may have an impact on the area in which they are located, or are capable of creating special problems for bordering properties unless given special attention.

     Such uses are clearly identified in the zoning codes under title 17 on our county web site.  The "permitted uses" and CUP uses are distinctly separated but for  the fact that the Conditional uses require a permit.

     The process is long.  This is because is requires the applicant to prove to the agency that they have adequate parking, restrooms, security and meet fire codes for ingress and egress.

   .  In addition, a CUP requires that the neighboring properties be notified and allowed to protest the use or event since is may have significant impact on them.

     This is because the event or use is something that the neighbors coluld not reasonable anticiipate under the current use.

     This is the issue with the BUMP event.  Well over 2300 people have attended these events.  Only 1000 guests are allowed under it's current zoning.

    This is a violation of zoning codes in my opinion.......Could you get away with that?  Certainly a certain golf course owner couldn't

      .  Without a CUP there is no way to ensure public safety and that is a problem.

    But don't blame the property owners......Calaveras County makes it very easy. They do, in fact, enter into an agreement to provide protection.

     The good people of Copperopolis should be furious with the BOS not the owners.  Not only have they ignored repeated pleas for intervention, but they have deprived the citizens of their right to voice their opinion at the BOS which would have occurred in the CUP process.

         Your BOS hard at work once again.

                                                                           Just one Voice in Copper
