According to CHP, Augustine Cortez, 53 of Valley Springs, was driving a 1992 Ford Explorer northbound on Burson Rd. just south of Comanche Parkway South in Burson failed to properly negotiate a curve in the roadway
on October 15, 2012 around 2 PM.
The Explorer crossed the solid double lines and left the west roadway edge where it traversed a descending embankment and collided with a tree after going through a wire fence.
The collision resulted in fatal injuries to Mr. Cortez, who was pronounced deceased at the scene.
According to CHP, he was not wearing his seatbelt and was partially ejected out the drivers side window.
Alcohol or drugs may be a contributing factor and a toxicology report is being completed by the Calaveras County Coroner.
