Rotary gives away free dictionaries???

We think perhaps Gary Tofanelli and his Rotarian friends are a little behind the times. They have been bragging about giving some children free dictionaries.

While in the 1960's this may have been a generous gesture, nowadays all you have to do is type in the word to get the meanings immediately.

Perhaps next they will be selling encyclopedias door to door.  Well, Tofanelli may need a job, and that could be the plan.

We understand that the company could not sell these dictionaries and was merely unloading them.

There's nothing wrong with children looking up a word in a dictionary! They will remember the spelling or meaning of the word if they have to sound it out and find it themselves instead of the computer doing the work for them.

Nope! nothing wrong, like you say, but not realistic. Same thing by typing it in and there's no stopping it. You won't find any free 'dog-eared' dictionaries around anymore, like it or not.

While I am no fan of Tofanelli, I do appreciate the work Rotary does for the youth in our county. Having personally witnessed the distribution of dictionaries at Calaveras County schools I can say without a doubt this is still a very much needed program.
Many school children do not have internet access, let alone books in their homes. To receive a book that is their "own" is priceless, and yes they are dog eared, marked with highlighters, and used for many years.
