Calaveras County Sheriff's Deputy Involved Shooting in Valley Springs


    Just after midnight on July 1, 2012, deputies responded to a to the 30 block of Pelican Place in Valley Springs for a report of a family disturbance. 
     Upon arrival, and prior to being able to exit his patrol vehile the  Deputy was approached by a male adult, identified as Michael Garner Ward (26) of Valley Springs, brandishing a
shotgun,  as the suspect  approached the Deputy he pointed the shotgun towards the deputy.
     Fearing for his own safety, the deputy, while seated in his patrol vehicle, fired two shots through the windshield at suspect Ward.

    Suspect Ward was not struck by the deputy's gunfire.
     A third subject who had been a witness to the incident disarmed the suspect and the suspect was taken into custody by the Sheriff's Department, arrested, and booked into Calaveras County Jail.
     The Deputy received some minor ear injuries due to shooting from a closed confined space (the inside of his patrol vehicle), was transported to Mark Twain Hospital and later released.
     The Deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave which is standard policy.
     The District Attorney's Office and the Sheriff'a Office are handling the investigation in accordance with policies and procedures.  Valley Spring News
