Sonora man dies in Jeep fire

According to CHP, on September 22, 2015 around 3:30 PM a 71 year old male of Sonora was stopped in a driveway on Red Heather Drive
in Sonora in a 2008 Jeep.

This is near Soulsbyville and was reported here yesterday as a "fire near Soulsbyville". At that time it was labeled the "fall incident".

For unknown reasons the Jeep rolled backwards down the steep driveway, southbound across Red Heather Drive and down a steep embankment.

The Jeep struck several rocks as it travelled in reverse down the embankment, finally striking a tree and coming to a stop.

The vegetation around the Jeep caught fire and the fire became very large before fire personnel could contain it.

Unfortunately the driver of the Jeep was pronounced dead at the scene. It is not known if the driver was attempting to back out of the driveway or if the Jeep rolled out of control.

An investigation is ongoing. The driver, whose name is being withheld until notification of next of kin, died of major burns, per the report.
