Robert Gill Jr. - September 14, 1924 to August 5, 2012

Murphys resident Robert Gill Jr. died August 5, 2012 at home. He was 87.

Mr. Gill was born in Palms to Robert Gill Sr. and Elsie Chalmers, both originally of Aberdeen, Scotland. He was raised in Palms and Venice, California.

He served in the U.S. Army in Central Europe as a Communications Chief during WWII.  After he was honorably discharged in 1946, he worked as a Service Mechanic for the Southern California Gas Company for 35 years.

Upon retirement, he moved his family to Murphys, and then spent time tinkering with cars, radios, and televisions. He could fix anything.

He loved animals, and in his later years could be found sitting in his garage with his beloved cats in his lap, watching the neighbors go by.

Mr. Gill was preceded in death by his parents and his three sisters, Elsie, Blanche and Catherine.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Wally, of Murphys; daughters Anneliese Gill and her husband Brock Kolby, of Murphys, and Katherine Gill of Palo Alto; and a grandson, Jimmy Kolby of Murphys.

Funeral services will be held Friday, August 10, 2012 at 10 AM at Angels Memorial Chapel followed by internment at Buena Vista Cemetery in Murphys.  A reception will follow at the Gill residence on Rocky Hill Road.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his name can be made to the Calaveras Humane Society or Hospice of the Sierra.
